PlayStation 4 will not support 4K games, just videos

During the console's unveiling earlier this week, Sony announced that the PlayStation 4 would have 4K resolution support.
Today, however, PlayStation Executive Shuhei Yoshida says the PS4 will support 4K for video and photos but not for games.
Additionally, 3D functionality will no longer be a focus for the console.

So glad I bought a 3D TV....... If this is their train of thought I see Sony still doesn't give a shit about their old customers. Doesn't matter that we spent $4000 to play 3D games, it's not the "focus" anymore. Screw saving up for their new system. It seems like they're more concerned with damage control by listening to their press conference and they sounded more like vacuum salesmen then a billion dollar gaming company........

Yeah it's very bright actually, I bought the 240hz Sharp Aquos 3D LED TV a few years ago. It is the 900 series they don't make anymore. It has a 9 million to 1 contrast ratio so it's amazingly bright and the 3D looks fantastic. Plus it has a brightness booster if you want to use it

Coolant. Bit out my price range so I'm a bit envious. :)
Gaming would have a good depth-of-field and a faster framerates (even if they are multiplied)... cool.
I'm not one of those who disliked Jackson's The Hobbit HFR. I loved it. I've disliked, even hated, 24 fps for decades. I just can't filter out the strobing like I used to anymore. Only thing that I might have had any problems with where a few specular highlights here and there. They'll get better at it. Point is the 3d was much easier on the eyes too.

This is just window-dressing spec-fodder for the fanboy element.
In 5yrs time the number of people with 4K sets is going to be miniscule, ditto in 10yrs.
For the vast majority at the sizes most will ever buy 1080p is it.
....and prototype broadcasting in Japan aside nobody will have gone beyond 1080p broadcasts either, in fact 720p/1080i are by far the most economic standard (still being adopted very slowly around the world).
The only caveat I can see to make 4K possible is some discovery in making incredibly fast broadband very cheap.
....oh and one last thing, is it really 4K anyways?

The picture is 4k,thought i heard the ps4 will be $500 (US).

That's the cool part, I actually bought the regular LED from Abe's of Maine for $1700. 2 months down the road me and the wife went to go watch TV and there was a red line straight down the center of the screen. So I called sharp (because it was under the 1 year manufacturer's warranty) and also sent them an email basically saying how ridiculous it was to spend two grand on a TV which didn't last 2 months. They said take pictures and send it to them. I did, they got back to me saying that it wasn't worth fixing and they were going to upgrade me to the highest LED they had free of charge and they would come get the old one. So just for shits and giggles I asked how much it would be if I wanted the 3D one instead, she said $450, I was like please take my money. So I ended up getting the best TV they had which was $4000 for $2200 total in the end. I know I'll never get an opportunity like that again so that's why I took it. I give Sharp alot of credit for standing behind their products.
4K is another gimmick and ridiculously expensive for something the human eye can't even see. The only time that resolution will ever come into play is if your TV is 80"+

I would disagree, that 4K is yet another gimmick. I would agree it is the latest and greatest marketing buzzzzzzzzzz word, but it something worthwhile. Looking at the current TVs in research they are at 8K and from that they are saying you can get such a high resolution you almost can't tell if it is a TV or looking out your house through a window. Also they say 8k is the upper limit where your eye will not be able to distinguish anything better. In contrast 3D TV was more just hype, not enough content, had to wear very uncomfortable glasses which often give many headaches as well or suffer the problems similar with old rear projection TVs, that being limited spots where viewing was any good, this is particularly true for 3D TVs which don't require glasses..
I might also be in a minority, TVs that look perfectly fine to others i will normally see pixilation and/or a distinct grid pattern in the picture. Not so much with a lot of the higher end top of the line TVs like the new OLED or 4k TVs, but most all others the pictures look like crap to me.

And if they deleyed this train wreck 3 years and focused on making a full BWC unit with new better looking games that can do 4k....... this is a sad joke.....

My grand maw and ehr sis are 90 soemthings and have a 32 inch SD TV. I have a 37 inch Vizio led HD tv and a 32 SD tv for better classic gaming.

No, it's like "Why focus on something that only a small portion of consumers even care about?" Just like w/ PS2-compatibility on PS3, only around 15% of people even cared about it, so why keep the extra $40 or so worth of hardware when you're still selling it at a loss?

It's ALWAYS been a gimmick, but especially so w/ 3D HDTVs because the manufacturers needed something 'new' to sell to people who already upgraded from CRT TVs and regular HDTV sales were decreasing.

As far as I'm concerned 3d gaming is here to stay and (I don't give a stuff about what others are saying) they clearly indicate "...it's not a focus. But it does do it better. The basic capability is higher so more games will run at 1080p at 60 frames so it's an easier and better experience when you watch on 3D TV [true]." They are clearly trying not to turn off people who haven't bought into it but it will be a standard anyway so don't worry. Also, HFR movies will become another standard and in 3d in 1080p they'll look great.
Meanwhile you don't need the glasses for ordinary 2d so what is the fuss about from some people? I can't justify the purchase myself but good luck to anyone that can. Maybe I can buy DVDback23 grans's old model 2nd hand in a couple of decades when she upgrades. :P
