Ubuntu Touch preview headed to at least 20 new devices

article published on 27 February, 2013

Last week, Canonical released their Ubuntu Touch developer preview for Nexus smartphone and tablet owners. The company has announced today that at least 20 more devices will soon be able to flash the operating system, allowing for a much wider developer base. Among the new devices are the Motorola XOOM, Sony Xperia S, Sony Xperia T, Samsung Galaxy S III (international, Verizon Wireless, ... [ read the full article ]

Someone please tell me why this would be better than Android?

Especially considering that Linux desktops suck... even Linus says so.

PS: I do use boot up the Puppy distro for all financial transactions... but that's it.

Its a lot easier being righteous than right.

If you're a Linux developer (or simply like Linux), you can turn many tablets (and smartphones) into rather capable Linux dev environments. I don't see the confusion.

Linus stated that the desktop environment is a hard market, not that Linux desktops suck. I'm not trying to be a fact-checker here, but what he actually stated and what you claimed he stated are two different things.

I'm not a Ubuntu fan at all it is a poor distro as Linux goes even though it is popular. But I must say the UI seems pretty nice for the mobile world so I could see where people, especially Linux users, might like this.

Good job! :D

No, I'm not wrong... he's very disappointed in them. I've read his interviews. "Suck" is admittedly summarising:

Linus has a long history of being dissatisfied with the state of Linux desktops, a problem that seems to have got worse for him with the move to the next generation of desktops.
Linus Torvalds: I don't think the desktop is doing too well, and there's technical reasons.

(From: http://www.techradar.com/au/news/softwa...-money-1112900)

The only place where the "market" maybe gets a mention is in regards to pre-installs. But why is that? He goes on to state that the OS UIs are NOT conducive to "doing real work". Too many chiefs and not enough (paid) Indians. Of course he says there's nothing wrong with the kernel (true). Esp after he wrote Git. But, hang on, doesn't he control and maintain that aspect?

Do yourself a favour and perhaps check out the latest "Why Linux Sucks" conference & talks on YouTube. Even the speaker says he bored with repeating himself ad nauseum "year after year". Why Linux Sucks | LFNW 2012

Jeez, they still can't get audio fixed ffs. And 1337s telling ordinary people that they are essentially "too lazy or stupid" in regards to using them, well... do I get angry or laugh here?...

PS: For the record, MINT is the premier Linux desktop now ...and for good reason.

You know what, I remember having audio issues last I had Ubuntu installed on my laptop. I would have my speakers plugged in, yet the onboard audio would still play. And I've seen the 1337's you're referring to, it's quite sad, really.

I'll definitely watch the video you posted, and look for more.

Excellent... it's not an Anti-Linux OS vid.

Imagine a day where the relevant people put aside their differences and get behind one Linux desktop for popular use. One OS they they can eventually incorporate all the features they want. One that will get streamlined and "un-bloated" over time as a result. One manufacturers will, including nVidia, write drivers for and update regularly. One that exploits and improves OpenGL so it poops on DirectX. One that sticks it to Apple fanboys. You get the idea.

Cheers.

I didn't say "when". Haha. Read my other posts here... you might have missed the point of what I was saying. I was saying it was not gonna be likely. It's like wrangling cats imo. Ironically there actually IS a system of standards for a Linux desktop... it's just that it's completely ignored :D

Why Linux Sucks | LFNW 2012

Not until it's accepted that it can't be 100% free probably. Something's gonna have to be paid for it. Witness Steam's Xi3 Piston Engine or Steam Box will run on Linux (and OpenGL).

That is one of the problems with Open Source is the Standards will always get trampled on. But it is better still to have competition so going to one distro wouldn't be a good move anyway.

Here is another thing to wrap your hands around, if Linus doesn't like the Desktop GUI's then why in the world doesn't he build a better one as an example and for use of course. What a hypocrisy I would say if that is his true sediment about Linux Desktops.

Time has not borne out your opinion. Anyway, there's competition from MS, Apple, FreeBSD, OS2 to name a few.

As per my posts here... he's fully employed on the kernel by the Linux Foundation. He also says it's outside his skill set. He's not the only critic (see previous link) and he wasn't the focus of my initial remark. Besides, and this is a BIG besides, you underestimate the enormity of the task.

It boggles the mind that someone who's work helps keep the internet running and affordable amongst many many other things should garner this blithe attitude.

Touch preview isn't spectacular from what I've seen of it, and as a result I wasn't inclined enough to flash it personally.

It's a dev preview so it's essentially non-functional for daily use in my opinion and it looks a bit gimmicky, but I don't hate Ubuntu/Linux entering the phone OS market if they get it right.

I don't think it is beyond his skill set as he made the original distro, I think my criticism still stands. Also I agree with the fact that Linux just isn't there, still, and I'm not impressed by Ubangy either, I use SUSIE, Fedora, and others before Ubunta. Although I have a friend that uses it but it is the only distro he has used so that says something.

This is a prime example of how you get off track, often.

I didn't say he said anything, but now you seem to have twisted it that way. Just a prime example of how fast you get off base and twisted.

Whether you like ubuntu or not is a matter of opinion. I happen to like ubuntu and cant wait to see ubuntu on tablets and phones. Mint is fine, but i have been using ubuntu since 2004, and will stick with it.
