New bill could allow tablet use from airplane takeoff to landing

article published on 12 March, 2013

Senator Claire McCaskill has stated this month that she will write a new bill that will allow passengers to use their electronics during all times of their flight. In a letter to FAA Administrator Michael Huerta, the democrat cited her "concern" with the admin's "lack of direct engagement" on expanding the long-standing rules on electronics use during takeoff and landing. The current ... [ read the full article ]

Sounds like typical bureaucracy to me.

We're forming a committee to form a committee on deciding on the color of the committees log book. Please check back in 4~6 months as we should have the preliminary steps for this procedure started by then.

Politics is nothing more that talking about wherever is trending today and hardly do something positive about it, but most of the time they do nothing at all; just keep treating people liberties on the daily basics.
Tomorrow they will do the same thing as yesterday.

Gotta love it, I'm not happy about having to turn off my iPad2 so I'm going to force the laws or rules about that so I can have MY iPad2 on at all times.

I've been told the FAA have been looking into this but testing the effect of radio waves distruping plane computers etc.

BUT!!!!!

That is taking far far too long I do have another flight in 8 hours I need this change straight away.

I look forward to watching how some planes crashed due to this forced law/rule change on that plane crash show.

I'm kind of on the fence on this one. I can understand cell phones and other electronics interfering with the plane's nav systems. I could see not banning all electronics, if we live in a perfect world, devices would operate as designed, but we don't live in one. While it might be possible to say only cell phones and communication devices need to be off, but then what is a phone baked into the tablet, is a a tablet or a phone and it should be off. Mixed with someone who has a said device though they turned off the phone in their tablet, only to find out from an FAA analysis someone did have one on. Or other that might figure they have there tablet on, why can't I have mine also? Say the first person's table was fine and second person's is the one that caused the crash. All these issues and considering how stupid some people are, it seems like a fair compromise to request no use until the plane reaches the 10,000 feet? Might be stupid to have this law imposed on everyone, but sure feels safer to fault on the side of safety first!

This is exactly what's wrong with the security theater we have right now. Because a few people are paranoid everyone has to suffer. One guy has a "shoe bomb" and suddenly everyone takes their shoes off. People don't realize more planes fall out of the sky for technical reasons, killing everyone out of pure coincidence/neglect. More people have died due to accidents than every terrorist attack. But that's not as exciting news I guess.

I think it's BS too. Does someone sitting next to you using their cell phone affect how your laptop or tablet works? Of course not, you can be in a room with hundreds of different electronic devices buzzing away and your stuff will still work, this interference shit is just that...shit.
Airline pilots even say the same thing and they use tablets during take-offs and landings all the time, for work purposes of course

Yeah, and when you think about it, if the plane was using equipment that sensitive to interference then we'd all be f**ked hey? :)

As an English comedian once said.....

'if it really was true that mobile/cell phones & tablets & laptops effected aircraft electronics then we wouldn't be allowed to take them into the cabin at all'.

Think about it.

They'd have to be stowed luggage only and checked before they went on that they were turned off.

It's BS.

Hey, what happened to the Enola Gay's equipment when the bomb went off? Did the radio frizzle out?

It was all just FUD at the beginning of the electronics age in aircraft that's STILL hanging on. Understandable then, but we all know better now.
There are so many powerful radio/microwave waves travelling thru the airspace these days that these planes wouldn't even get off the friggin ground if interference was such a big problem and if they did get off the ground they wouldn't stay there very long would they...LOL

And why is it only during takeoffs & landings, right? If it were such a big safety issue they would do exactly that, make you stow it all in your luggage or not even allow it on the plane at all! Because if they were left on in the luggage, they would still pose a threat since they're constantly sending out signals for a myriad of reasons.
It makes no sense at all, it's as "plane" & simple as that ;)

Well, they were told to turn off all electronics for the blast because of the EMP phenomenon that was discovered during initial testings. Fortunately tho, the detonation altitude and the fact that the engines' ignition (and other) systems were mechanical meant that they were not affected.
