i am new to this, so hopefully some one can help me here. i have been backing up my own dvd video to dvd-r disks (emtec brand) using dvdxcopy express v2.5.2 successfully many times. However recently I used ahead nero v5.5.10.52 to create dvd videos from files on the hard disk and after doing so successfully on 4 dvd-rs I find that the dvd writer does not recognise blank dvd-rs disks anymore.

when i re-use dvdxcopy express to back up more dvds, the software can read the dvd successfully but when I put in a dvd-r disk for writing, it does not recognise the disk in the drive and would not allow me to start step 2 of the copy.
i have tried uninstall and re-install of dvdxcopy and also nero to no avail.

is this caused by nero resetting some drivers/settings cause I remembered seeing some msg to that effect. what can i do to restore back to the time when i could use dvdxcopy successfully?

You probably installed the InCD program that came with the Nero. If so, it'll have to be removed. Conflicts with Xcopy. The rest of the Nero program can stay.

Thanks for advice. How do I remove InCD? In fact how do I uninstall Nero - I can't see an Uninstall program specifically for it so what I did was use XP software remove function. Is that how I could safely remove Nero and/or InCD?

Also why did the conflict not come up in the first 4 successful runs I did with Nero?

According to the Nero 6 manual;
1 Insert Nero 6 CD
2 Installation menu appears, select component to remove, click appropriate button to start wizard
3 In the welcome window you will again see the programs you wish to uninstall, click on Next to continue the uninstall
4 Click on Remove and confirm by clicking Next, the Uninstall wizard opens
5 The Nero 6 uninstall wizard then automatically removes the chosen component,Click Finish
6 Then reboot, I normally reboot Twice Good luck regards ispy

I dont think this problem is caused by Incd. Even Nero on its own without dvdxcopy does not recognise dvd-r disks. Using Nero Info Tool, I noticed that the dvd writer is now indicating that it can only read dvd+r disks, cdr disks etc but not dvd-r disks. Somehow the dvd writer has lost its capability to recognise dvd-r disks. It's a MSI DR8-A model with firmware 130d. Any suggestions to get it to recognise dvd-r disks again? Could upgrading its firmware help? I noticed that it;s latest firmware is 150d. I read the instructions to do so says to copy the firmware and dvdflash to the destination folder but what is the destination folder? also if I dont have a floppy disk how can I boot the pc to dos mode? do I really have to or can I use the windows dos prompt to do so?

Newie,
If you have XP as an operating system, have you tried going into Device Manager and unistalling the Drive then rebooting computer so that XP reinstalls the drive this can sometimes help to force the drive into DMA mode.Did you establish if you had InCD installed? Another thing you could try as well,is System Restore to a time where everything was OK then see what other programmes have been installed if any since that date that could be causing th problem.

Flashing the firmware may help, but if not, could be a defective drive.

the destination folder is the new folder that you will create on the HDD(harddrive).

here is a link that will assist with the boot disk issue.

Oh, Almost forgot.Check my computer and be certain that Nero hasn't installed virtual drives. A virtual drive will show like a normal cd/dvd-rom. If so these need to be removed via Nero.
To identify a virtual drive...
You can place a cd or dvd in the rom drives. When you open My computer, the physical rom drives will show the names of the inserted cd/dvd disk.

Virtual drives only will show in the "devices with removable storage" section.

Yes I have tried going into Device Manager and unistalling the Drive then rebooting computer so that XP reinstalls the drive. - did not resolve the problem.
I did look to see if InCD was installed - did not see it in Task Mgr.
I also tried to System Restore to 2 earlier dates (one at a time) when I know it was working ok - but this did not resolve the problem.
I dont remember seeing any virtual drive with Nero but can try that too.
Looks like I may have to return it to the supplier to see if they can work it out.
Not sure if I want to do any flashing as I am afraid that I may validate any warranty by doing too much.
Thanks for your suggestions...
