Report: Netbooks to go way of Dodo by 2015

article published on 14 April, 2013

According to a new IHS report, netbooks will go completely extinct by 2015. At one time, (not so long ago) netbook sales were huge, but the launch of the iPad began their demise prematurely. In 2010, 32 million units were sold, but in that year Apple unveiled the iPad. Sales dropped to 21 million the next year and 14 million last year as customers moved to ultrabooks and cheaper tablets ... [ read the full article ]

Well they could, they are just 'NET' books, but they will no longer make them as the market has changed. Also, the OS was an issue for small, non-'touch' screens back then. But Chromebooks work as the OS was designed for small screens without 'touch', but they are a little too late to market.
I had an XP netbook back in the day but the screen was too small for that OS. I put JoliOS on it and all was fine. All said, people want tablets now. I like both.

I've had an Walmart Acer netbook ($250) for years. With an external DVD/USB harddrive it functions very well. Don't overload it with programs and keep your files off the c drive. I recently installed Win8 and it runs ok but there are a few "hickups" like not having a high enough screen resolutions to see all the functions of some programs. Eventually I will buy another netbook with Win8 installed and the new system will have the updated resolution. After than, no more netbooks because they won't be in production anymore ;(

have a few tablets in the house my wife has an ipad and my daughter also, nothing beats my tower and its not a gaming tower, its just a quad core with 4 gig ram and numerous hdds added for ahem..... stuff. i will never get rid of my tower
also if the ipad crashes it needs my tower to give the tablet a tablet via itunes, i think without a tower or a lappy your tablets really aint much up to scratch. even for my phone i download apk's to my tower and bluetooth them to my phone, and tablets can not burn audio/video or games. so tower/lappy all the way

Surely they will not have gone the way of the Dodo until there are none left alive.

My Lenovo netbook continues to be very handy and much more suited to my use than a tablet. I use it mainly for writing books and its highly regarded keyboard is far superior to using a virtual keyboard for rapid typing.

I've even got a Sinclair Z88 that I bought in 1987 - at almost 400 UK pounds it took a giant slab of my study grant. I wrote much of my PhD thesis on that little computer and it still works perfectly. It's not dead yet and definitely not gone the way of the Dodo. Museum piece, probably, but not dead and gone. :)
