I'm using Shrink 3.17 and recently the time to rip DVD's has gone up dramatically. It used to take 15-20 mins to rip a DVD, it now takes 45-50 mins. My burner is an NEC ND-2500a.

I also noticed that in the 'burn settings' tab in shrink all the options are greyed out now, I don't think that was the case before. The time to burn the files to blank media has stayed the same, around 15 mins usually. Any ideas?

The first thing I would check is to go into device manager and make sure your DMA is enabled on your IDE buss, the one your DVD ROM is on.
You may want to remove and reinstall Shrink as well.

The DVD RW is on an onboard promise ata100 controller. I believe DMA is on by default, there are no settings for it in CP, but I'll check into it.

I've had a similar experience. When I first installed Shrink, it ripped at 7000 or so, and now I'm lucky to hit 4000. I changed some stuff in my bios, although not sure what (setting up a relatively new computer) and I flashed the firmware...several times. I've tried 1.6, 1.7, and the 1.7v2 from Herrie (or whoever).

Kind of ticks me off a bit.

I wish there was a walkthru on how to set your system up for best possible ripping.

Windows can change your DMA settings if it encounters more than 6 timeouts. It will change it to PIO.

From Micro$oft:

"To enable DMA mode using the Device Manager

1. Open Device Manager.

2. Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.

Right-click the icon for the channel to which the device is connected, select Properties, and then click the Advanced Settings tab.

4. In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if Available if the current setting is "PIO Only."
If the drop-down box already shows "DMA if Available" but the current transfer mode is PIO, then the user must toggle the settings. That is:

? Change the selection from "DMA if available" to PIO only, and click OK.

? Then repeat the steps above to change the selection to DMA if Available."

Your burn settings are greyed out unless you select your burner under the "target device" tab and you have the "Enable burning with Nero" box checked under Edit-> Prefrences-> File I/O.

Thx fasfrank, but there are no settings for DMA on my onboard ata 100 controller. The drive is in my HTPC, and I just realized that I haven never run defrag on that system.... maybe that's the problem. I'll post back and let you know if it works.

Well the drive was very heavily fragmented, but de-fragging it didn't help a bit.

dakota00, I think I just found out your problem... Did you recently replace your ATA controller with a PCI Promise controller? If so that might be it. I myself purchased a liteon 812s and a promise Ultra100 TX2 ATA controller. Like you, their is no option in the control panel to enable / disable Ultra DMA. For some reason, when the liteon was connected to the Promise controller, it would only burn @ 1.33x. Now, when it is directly connected to the motherboard controller, it burn a full 4gb dvd in less than 13 minutes... (4x) not bad. I'm doing some research into the controller and seeing if it may be a bios upgrade issue of some sort.

You mentioned you had a "HTPC" What kind of pc is that?

Hi dakota00,
Well I think djgizmo has narrowed it down. If he is using the same controller and had a similar problem.

I did a search on these controllers, and as near as I can tell it is some sort of mod to allow raid 0 operation of a pair of hard drives. Is this correct?

Motherboard brand / model.
Harddrive Drives
Other DVD/Cdrom Drives

fasfrank, yes and no on the raid. Promise Technology Inc produces several Harddrive controller card. ATA, SATA, and even SCSI. The have all kinds of models including ones that just give you extra ide channels (Going beyond the standard 4 ide devices)

Hi trexstang,

It's considered a bit discourteous to "hijack" a thread. You're more than welcome to start a new thread here so we can help you in that thread :)

It appears that your laptop drive has no cap on the ripping speed whereas most burners will have the read speed capped at 2X for DVD videos.

djgizmo,

No, the promise controller is integrated into the motherboard, it is not an add on card. My motherboard is an Asus A7V with 2 onboard ATA66 IDE channels, and 2 onboard ATA100 channels(promise controller). It does not feature RAID. The only drives installed are the NEC DVD burner and a Matrox 120G HD, both on the ATA controller but on seperate channels. The only thing affected is the time to rip a DVD to the harddrive, the time to burn the files to a DVD is the same. (about 10-15 mins)

HTPC stands for Home Theatre PC. I have an ATI All in Wonder video card in it and use it as a TIVO, without the monthly fee.... ;)

I think I'll try moving the DVD over to the standard IDE interface and see what happens. It's just strange that it worked perfectly for so long, then all at once this problem pops up.

dakota, thanks for the reply. Well, it is very curious... Have you been able to perform a Nero CD-DVD Speed Test?

I'd try that and see how that works for you. Have you installed ANY software lately, around the time the problem started? Have you update your motherboard drivers? Have you update your motherboard's bios?

I'll stick with you to see if the issue can be resolved?
