Microsoft finally reveals how Internet connectivity will work on Xbox One, and used game policy

article published on 6 June, 2013

After extreme backlash and outcry over their purported anti-consumer Xbox One, Microsoft has finally come clean, unveiling the official policies for Kinect, used games and online connectivity. Internet Connectivity In regards to Internet connectivity, rumored had it that the Xbox One would use "always-on" DRM, meaning an Internet connection is required at all times to play a game, ... [ read the full article ]

The problem is that games are estimated to increase up to $70 in price. Of course I have no sources for this information, but I have heard it more than one. It definitely doesn't sound like prices will be going in the other direction. Speculation, not fact.

right now, i can take my 360 game forza and bring to a friends system and play it there, even tho i need to create a new game save, thats fine, but i dont need to PAY A FEE!!!

blow me microsoft. I will not buy the xbox one, nor will i ever. ps4 is looking MUCH better!!! ATLEAST they dont CHARGE me to play my friends game i borrow on my system.
or if i buy a used game because im not as rich as microsoft! and cant afford a brand new $60.00 game that im gonna beat in 5 days anyways.

but hey, the hackers will find a way around this, and once they do i will buy a USED HACKED xbox one, and play without having to pay the extra fee. I will buy games thats fine, but if i can get around your always online every gay 24 hours or 1 hour. I will gladly do it!!! and so will alot of people. so expect it because it WILL happen.

i dont care about playing online I have satalite so i cant anyways.

so HACK AWAY!!

EDIT: oh yea, what about all those who DONT EVEN HAVE INTERNET!!! microsoft says , too bad edited by ddp you!!

I don't think MS is that fussed about that as the only market Xbox seems big in is the US market so this box is probably trailer made for the US.

Well for idiots that buy this, you deserve what you get!

NOW is the time to go with a PS4 or like me...a good PC because I do not even own a console...I like to mod games too much and you cannot do that on a console!

The GTA series of mods have been awesome for PC and if they come out with a new GTA 5 for PC they should be awesome as well.

But trade my PC for a console with restrictive DRM and no mods? No thanks.

By the way...this would be a PERFECT opportunity for Sony to take over the console market again. All they have to do, is simply NOT INCORPORATE any of the trash that Microsoft is doing and people will flock to them in droves. Leaving xbox in the dust!

Maybe THEN Microsoft will change their minds, but if people keep buying what Microcrap is selling, why should they change?

:)

I prefer to purchase my cars rather than lease, and I would prefer to be able to buy and sell used games. I think that's what most people would prefer.

Unfortunately, I think publishers are so fixated on muscling in on the resale side of the market that they will end up cutting off their noses to spite their face. I'll probably buy the XBox One for my kids, but the new generation of consoles won't get nearly the sales figures that the previous generation got. The decision by MSFT and, I suspect, Sony, to allow these restrictions will mark the end of the golden age of console gaming. I think that is a sad thing.

The big issue that will hurt them is customers losing internet connection for hours to days. It happens to everyone, no internet means no games to play. That is what can really hurt their sales. Plus people who live in dial up areas are told to move because we(microsoft) do not want to provide the no internet conncection options.

Interesting although the response is in large part predictable.

Microsoft aren't doing what many claimed they would, so forget all that nonsense & move on to making up a load of other stuff.

All with the underlying message that Sony won't do something similar (like as if they have spelt everything out themselves at this stage).

If, as I have said for a while now, game devs choose to implement what some see as an awful 'phone home' to verify/check then it will be the game devs doing so, not Microsoft.
Undoubtedly the facility is there because game devs want to tighten things up & get a piece of the 2nd hand market.

It always amuses me that the pro-Sony guys always ignore the DRM PS3 & BD brought in whilst complaining about what Microsoft might do.

That and the way this is treated like it's the end of the world - as on-going revelations of snooping in the USA (and now UK) shows where the real abuses & rights infringements are happening.

Distraction & misdirection anyone?

What a load of crap this is. So anywhere there's no internet connection (lake house, internet is down, etc.) this unit is completely useless.

All I can say is bring on the mods. Only then would I consider buying this. Otherwise, Microsoft and companies like EA can keep their over priced, over protected junk.

"trailer made" huh? Is that a crack at those of us who live in trailers and might not have cable/dsl connections?

I think this is the end for console gaming for me. Combine all of this crap and the way they market DLC, the next gen will be ripping us off. So many people complain about dlc. Im talking day-one dlc and shorter campaigns and season passes. Yet everyone buys it. This next gen is going to be expensive. Console gaming is now all about the money and way less creative content. Exercise your rights or they will be taken away. Dont buy the console if you dont like this news. I think microsoft is taking advantage of us. We still have the right not to buy.

Probably since he did not even spell trailer correctly. You'd think people would look at what they have written before they submit their comments. It's not like there is a stop watch rushing them.

I agree! This is crazy. We are giving up way too much privacy simple to play games.

...which only goes to show how ludicrous this claim is.

Anyone who imagines the next Xbox is going to cut out the millions of potential customers all around the world without a net connection is deluded.

All the games company's will choose to stop their games being sold as pre-own, they just see that if it is blocked then more money for them.

Off topic...
It really is a shame that PC games had no split screen modes, really important feature to me stops me from switching.
I play with groups of friends so often, I just can't afford 3-6 pcs.

Consoles are going backwards not forwards, back in 2000 we were excited for all the doors opening and 13 years later were more concerned about the doors being closed than anything about the console features. Money grabbing bastards no way I'm buying one hopefully people backlash against the fees and they have to bring it back to the way it is now

Say AGAIN, did you just READ what Microsoft itself SAID?

Maybe you need a reading comprehension class!

"Reads the company's statement:

A persistent connection is 'not required', but one IS if you want to 'verify if system, application or game updates are NEEDED and to see if you have acquired new games, or resold, traded in, or given your game to a friend.'

1.5MB internet connection is recommended"

What part about that do you not understand?

Well if they choose to do that, then once the public figures this out, they will simply not buy their games and they will go out of business!

In other words any company trying to do this will be basically slitting their own throats.

People WANT TO PLAY their games however they want without all these restrictions. And it is about time companies like Microsoft that are ALLOWING this to happen suffer miserable sales!

I really do hope people don't act like "sheepole" on these issues, the only way to get this stopped is to attack a company where it hurts....in their pocketbooks!

and then I read this.."Xbox One will use a restrictive DRM but it is not "always-on." You will be allowed to play on your home console for 24 hours without a connection, BUT AFTER THAT you will need to login again to continue playing and get another 24 hours"

never have I read so much absolute f*cking nonsense and total sh*te. isn't it amazing how some people interpret the FACTS but end up with a statement of pure fiction.
no self respecting company is going to block re-sale of their games discs, it would be a PR and marketing disaster. EA have clearly learned a lesson what with revoking the need to purchase an "online-pass" for used games (average price on XBOX360 was previously 800 M$ points which is around £7 -sometimes the cost of said used game to purchase).no company is going to make themselves the bad guy by restricting resale of used games - you all missed the point that by doing so said company misses out on potential sales of DLC as well. any COD/MW player who keeps up to date with DLC will pay AT LEAST the cost of the retail game in doing so.
not to mention DIGITAL sales.OBVIOUSLY there will need to be online checks or we would all be copying games over to hard drive and not bothering to buy them. I wonder how many of those whining here have paid to rent a digital copy of a movie (or would they rather download it for free? after all where's the harm etc.)
sorry but heard it all before.buy it or don't but at least wait to find out what FACTS are before ranting on about a lot of sh*t that may or may not happen, and also quoting other's comments as if they had originally come from bill gates himself.
also have to laugh at those trying to recommend PC gaming.
not everyone has the latest pc/gfx card or can be arsed to upgrade every 3months to play the latest games...
no such worries with a console - your chosen game WILL work with minimum fuss, simple (like many who have posted here )

Its a game console. I should be able to bring it home, plug it in and play it. I should not have to supply a broadband service for it to work. I wont be buying it.

Yes trigger, i wont be buying either. Even though i rarely buy used games im not buying based on principle alone. Whats next? The generation after next and they will use kinect to determine how many people are in the room, and if there are more than 2 they will charge your friends extra to just watch.

Suppose your ISP has an outage for 2 days. Your games will not work anymore because you couldn't check-in with MS; nice shiny VCR sized cable box you have at that point. They said that you can turn off the Kinect camera but the console will not function without Kinect attached. Well, seeing as how MS will have the ability to remote connect to your console to do auto updates every 24 hrs, they can essentially turn the camera on remotely without you being aware; Big Brother will be watching you...lol. After all it's a modified Windows based PC in the guise of a cable box/console, and who better knows how remotely control Windows than the creators of Windows...lol
