Xbox One will support used games, won't require Internet connection for Offline gaming

article published on 20 June, 2013

Microsoft has caved to criticism from gamers and others in the industry, killing plans to require Internet connection for Offline play and limiting the ability to play used games. The announcement has come from Microsoft just one week after E3, where the new Xbox One system was unveiled by the company, before the PS4 was shown off to the world. Microsoft's policies toward playing used ... [ read the full article ]

Good on M$ for caving (and well done to the gaming community for forcing them to!), but the damage to the Xbox brand has already been done. And there's still the spectre of mandatory, always-on Kinect spying on you for the gub'mint. M$ signed up to the PRISM program, remember? <_< >_>

You left off the part about how some features were going to be taken away due to this change:

via gametrailers.com

"There?s a few things we won?t be able to deliver as a result of this change," said Marc Whitten. "One of the things we were very excited about was 'wherever we go my games are always with me.' Now, of course your physical games won?t show up that way. The games you bought digitally will. You?ll have to bring your discs with you to have your games with you. Similarly, the sharing library [is something] we won?t be able to deliver at launch."

The family sharing feature that Microsoft revealed a couple weeks ago will be going away. This is because the new DRM policy won?t require users to register their game online or perform 24 hour online check ins, now that games will be handled just like it does currently on Xbox 360.

That should be fairly obvious.

My biggest question in all of this: doesn't MS have a marketing or PR team? Why didn't they do surveys and research the public reaction to these "features" before announcing them? They could've saved themselves a ton of trouble.

Even though we all knew this was coming, it is still good to see. Nothing good was going to come from one console dominating the market.

Pffttt...consumers have short memories. 5 months down the track this will be a distant memory. Only hardcore gamers and the angry souls that inhabit this wonderful site will continue to hold a grudge.

My thought exactly. Most of the people that will buy this don't even know it exists yet! They'll stroll into a store around the holidays, recognize it from ads or their kids' begging for it, and buy it. (See the original Wii for reference!)

Don't be surprised if things change in a year or two. The Microsoft rep said, "Similarly, the sharing library [is something] we won?t be able to deliver at launch." Once the XBox One has sold a few million consoles they will start releasing new games that require the 24 hour check in, DRM, no used sales, etc in order to support the "user experience" of sharing.

Microsoft doesn't like to back down. They will just delay their plans for a while.

180, indeed. Still costs too much, though. I might actually consider it if they drop the price to more comparable levels.

Really??? Really??? "Family Sharing"

Does anyone truly give a shit about "family sharing" with an XBox???????????

NO!

They care about the next release of Call of Duty......PERIOD!

I think the damage is done, people are going to pass on XBox this time more so than expected and MS is gonna lose their shirts on this 500.00 dollar behemoth.

and that's the kind of power we consumers have, now if we only knew how to use it against other big companies like Apple things will be much different. Now lets let microsoft know we want a $399.00 coonsole. Let's see what happens

Why would anyone buy this? You see what they wanted to do to you. They only changed because Sony's actions forced them to. Be a leader, not a follower Microsoft.

Microsoft may have sealed their fate. This will come to haunt them when it is released.

PS4 was laughing and enjoying the show this whole time. Now they got to stop fooling around and actually get serious. XB1 is now a suitable competitor. If they match the price to $399, they will get really competitive.

It is NOT about holding a grudge, it is about what MS tried to FORCE on it's customers. THEY STARTED THIS WHOLE THING...REMEMBER? And if people are stupid enough to think that this is STILL a good deal then I feel sorry for them.

It is a shame this had to happen, but lets remember that Microsoft did it themselves and I too, think the damage is already done.

Time will tell.

I think everyone didn't catch on to this comment. I think this person is right... Microsoft wont do it at "Launch", not to say they wont do it 6 months later after launch and require DRM and can't play used games, etc. etc. We are not out of the waters yet, they will still screw us, just read into the key words they use.

they are only delaying it. Down the road they will make it to where you will still have to check in online somehow. It dont matter to me, because am done with xbox. I will stick with playstation.

and even if i did have an always on kinect, i would cover up the camera when im not using it. the govt, would use the kinect to spy on its owners. My kinect now, us unplugged from the USB port when I dont use it. as is my webcams etc. If i dont use them, the are NOT connected. now that the govt is spying on our cellphones etc, whats to stop them ( if they arent already ) spying on our webcams hooked up to our pcs.

so microsoft adds drm to xbox one... people get upset... i can relate to that... sure.... then they do 180 on that decision and remove the drm and all things related to that.... people get upset... i don't get it lol... as far as i know the whole sharing thing was just a limited trial/demo of the game... and it was done before... i mean ps3 has that(60 mins trials) the 360 has that on xblig/xbla... so you share a game up to 10 people... did you REALLY think you share a FULL game with them? think again... and lets not forget about the fact that the game you install could be around 10-40 gb while the other people on the share list have to download the game.... so you install it from a disk 20-40gb it does not take too much time to install.... but DOES take a while to download... you will be upset... and after 1 hour of game play you will be upset even more... im not going to buy xbox one... might buy ps4 but im not that keen on it... most of the games(watch_dogs/BF4/AC black flag) come to pc anyway so meh...

Why the hell would a person feel compelled to use the kinect and leave it on? Why not just unplug it or does it have to be on in order for the system to operate? I'm referring to the actuao console.

This is superman

Now what Microsoft needs to do is sell 2 versions of the Xbox One. One with kinect for 500.00, and one without for 400.00.
