Sony's $10 PS4 game upgrade detailed

article published on 19 September, 2013

Sony has detailed how you can upgrade PS3 copies of select games to PS4 versions for just $10 after the PS4 launch. So far only four titles will be included in the upgrade program, but they are big titles. If you have a copy of Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Watch Dogs, and Battlefield 4 - either on Blu-ray Disc or Digital - you can upgrade to a PS4 version for $9.99. ... [ read the full article ]

I think its bullshit to pay $60 for the game. Then have to pay another $10 to upgrade, I think it should be free. Kinda bullshit I think.

So it's not backwards compatible, but you still need the disk to play?

Just a scheme to squeeze more money out of people for absolutely nothing of value. IMO its more of a convenience fee for not having to hook up your ps3 to play an existing game.

Bullshit why?

You rather pay $60 for a PS3 copy then go pay another $60 for the PS4 version?

The point is you have to pay 10 dollars to use the SAME game you already have. It would be one thing if there was additional content on the PS4 version that you will be gaining access to but that does not seem to be the case. If you have the physical disc you still have to load it. Its an unnecessary measure considering people who purchased the digital copy do not have such a requirement.

The games obviously ARE compatible but you have to pay an additional fee to have the compatibility 'turned on' or you wouldn't need the physical disc, which is otherwise useless to your ps4. This is a money making ploy to charge people for something they already bought, nothing more. The limited release of large franchises is just to test the waters so they can see if this scheme will be profitable enough to 'turn on' the rest of their ps3 catalog.

How are the games "obviously" compatible?

If you bought the actual disc, requiring the PS3 disc to be in the PS4 tray makes perfect sense. How else is Sony suppose to verify ownership? Just because the PS4 can see that it's a PS3 disc does not mean it can automatically play that disc. That's why when you buy the $10 upgrade you still have to download it from the store to your hdd.

If it wasn't a requirement then everyone would run out and buy the games now, then buy the $10 upgrade, then turn around and return/sell the original copy, thus giving them the game for nothing more than $10.

For those who buy the original game digitally, then ownership is obvious as it's in your account.

Either the ps4 can read data off of ps3 discs or it can't. Obviously it can. Its more than a matter of being able to see a ps3 disc is in the tray, it has to be able to read at least some data from said disc to verify certain information. The only thing stopping compatibility is probably a few lines of code.
