CyanogenMod hits new milestone, 10 million downloads

article published on 22 December, 2013

The team over at CyanogenMod are having a good week, as the operating system has seen a new milestone, 10 million downloads. Earlier in the week, the team announced that the Oppo N1 was the first handset to receive Google certification to launch with CyanogenMod pre-installed with Google's suite of apps and Play Store. Samsung Galaxy devices appear to be the most popular for the operating system, as user opt to remove Samsung's bloat and optimize the powerful hardware.
Yes that's exactly it, as a Galaxy S3 owner that decided to jump on the new installer while it was still on the Play Store. Plus, I got Android 4.3 significantly before the big carrier markets, and I have a clear upgrade path past Kit Kat to w/e the next dessert is ^^' .

Some notes (in no particular order) for those who may be considering the change, from my experience with it so far:

- While not on the Play Store any more (for shaky reasons, imo; Google ticks me off sometimes), you can still get the same installer from CyanogenMod's site.

- I went from about 2/3 used space (ca. 8 GB) to 2/3 free on my internal storage, with everything reinstalled. There's a LOT less bloat.

- If you have a 2nd-party carrier, such as Ting (which uses Sprint's network), it DOES work but needs an additional step, which varies by carrier, to enable 3G/4G/LTE/MMS. You can find more info for Ting here (worked well for me) here, with more info here. Again, be aware, this will vary for other 2nd-party carriers!!! Don't start this process with a 2nd-party carrier without having an APN fix handy; it'll save pulled hair later.

- CM gets the same reception, generally, as stock ROMs, but shows fewer bars in the reception graphic. Basically, stock ROMs lie to you, as more bars = better PR; performance won't vary in the slightest (assuming you apply the APN fix, if you're a Ting user - lol).

- Remember to back up important stuff before getting frisky!
