Hi everyone, incase you didn't know, located here:
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=17-132-353&DEPA=0
you can get RIDATA +R DL Disks, they are really expensive though, $18 a piece, but, for all you Ritek/Ridata junkies out there, you can get them if you wish.
Also, they have a promotion going that if you buy either of these 50 packs
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=17-132-301&DEPA=0
OR
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=17-132-321&DEPA=0
then you get one +R DL disk for free.

Yes and probably a lot more reliably and certainly much cheaper - you should have no problems burning to S/L disks

I guess I can reply since I burned with one of these and two of the verbatim ones...

I got the verbatim ones first, and mistakenly burned Shanghai Noon without changing the bit set thing to dvd-rom. It burned fine, but wasnt even recognized by my home player, a Panasonic S35.

For the second verbatim one, I burned the same movie with the bit set changed to dvd-rom. Although it is now recognized by my Panasonic, I can get to the main menu, but the movie will not play. WHen I click play, it thinks for 10 seconds or so, and then stops playing.

For the Ritek disc, it exhibits the exact same setting as the 2nd verbatim disc I made. That is, gets to the menu, but won't play.

I burned all of these with a Lite-On 832 drive, using Nero 6.3. I also played the 3 dvd's on my older lite-on dvd-rom drives, and although they played ok, navigating the menus is very jerky, as is fast forwarding/rewinding/etc.

So, although quite discouraged by these results, I am thinking maybe it is just my player. It sucks because that Panasonic player has NEVER failed to play a 4.7GB burned dvd, and I have over 400.

I don't mind getting a new dvd player, I just dont know which one to get.

If anyone has burned dual layer disks and they play in your home players, can you post what dvd player you have?

Thanks,
Nate

Nate, i have successfully burned 2 dvd9 (8.5) verbatim on the LiteOn SOHW 832S DL burner using the new shrink. Turned out perfect, couldn't even tell where the layer change was.

I think your problem is your player, Panasonic. If I'm not mistaken they play -r and -rw's and the DL discs I've seen are +r's. I played mine in 5 players which would handle + and -, r and rw, all played flawlessly. These weren't all expensive players, 2 were under 100.00.

Try a Sony , they will handle all 4 formats and you can get 'em for 60 or 70 bucks. Believe it or not I've had more trouble out of my expensive players(carousel and dvd changer) than the cheap ones. Philips, Onkyo, Pioneer,Sanyo all handle all 4 formats.

Here's a link for DVD player compatibility.

Good luck!

bigorange: Actually, I've never burned anything but +r dvd's. My previous lite-on burner only supports +r. As I said, I do believe it is my Panasonic player, but it is odd that I never had a problem until now.
I found a Philips one (DVP642) that is supposed to play everything (at least thats what Philips claims :) ), and as soon as it comes in stock somewhere, I'm gonna get one and try it out.

Thanks bigorange! I actually did check that out, but unforunately theres not much data on DL dvd's and their compatiblity with home players yet. The Philips one faired pretty well, but the picture is not complete.
That why I will be purchasing the player from Target, so I can return if it doesnt play em! ;)

Sorry Nate, what I mean is all you have to check is + and -, r and rw. If it will play those it will play a DL disc. Most store bought DVD's nowadays are DVD9's.
It doesn't have to specifically say the player will play a dual layer disc? Does that make more sense?

I hear ya. But see here's the thing, my Panasonic S35 plays dvd+r's just fine. In fact, the S35 is listed on that page as supporting dvd+r and +rw, so based on that, someone could make the assumption that it would play DL dvd's as well. But of course I know that not to be true.
So I'm not sure how much stock I can put into picking a player from that page based soley on whether it will play +r's or not. Know what I mean?

I just wanted to kinda close out this post.

Today I purchased the Philips DVP-642 home player, to take the place of my Panasonic which wouldn't successfully play any of the 3 DL discs I burned.

I can happily report that not only did it play the Ritek and Verbatim disc which were set to a booktype of dvd-rom, but it also plays flawlessly the first Verbatim DL disc that I burned with the booktype set to normal!

I haven't tried any of my DVD+R disks yet, but I expect no problems. (If I do have any, I will report them here.)

Philip's motto for this player is "You have it, we play it." They certainly seem to have succeeded so far! You can apparently play DIVX disc's too.

Oh, interestly, this DVD player has a BIOS that can be upgraded via a download that you burn on CD. Pretty cool!

The only crappy thing about this player is...good luck finding one in stock some where! It took me a couple weeks, and I finally found ONE in stock at Target!

Here is a link to it:

HTH, and if anyone has any other questions about it, feel free to ask.

Nate

You can get the Ritek DVD+R DL discs at http:www.supermediastore.com for $9.99 each when they have them in stock ... be careful with what brand you buy in these DL jobbers ... they make real expensive coasters ... then again ... if you want to impress your friends ...

Well, you don't really have to be that careful, since Ritek and Verbatim are the only brands for sale at the moment. ;) That will, of course, be changing in the next couple months as more brands start making them.
