Hi all
I'm a newbie when it comes to dvd backups. I first tried memorex dvd+r media. Less than 50% burned w/o errors. Researched and decided to give ritek g04's a try. Ordered 25. They all burned (100%) w/o any errors. Cool. I ordered 50 more. out of the first 5, 1 has been error free, 2 will not play at all on my stand alone dvd player, and 2 have pauses and tileing. You never hear much bad about ritek, but could I have possibly gotten a bad batch? I'm useing the same hardware and software that I did with the first 25. Nothing has changed but the package from which I'm getting the media. Thanks.

Here's a download that will give you info on the media. It will confirm it is Ritek.

If it is Ritek, you likely have a problem with your system. Needing something as simple as a defrag could have caused the problem you mention. I defrag my HD after every 3 rip/burns.

Thanks Doc

Ya looks like my hard drive could stand a defrag. Did so about a week ago, but burned a few dvd's since then. Good advice I'll give it a try and also download that tool. I've got KProbe2 but another identifier won't hurt. Thanks again.

Hey Mort, not done yet!!!

How are your page file/virtual memory settings? I suggest 4000MB for min and max. This will keep Windows from making a defragged mess of your drive. You will still have to defrag, but this page file change will avoid other problems coming your way. Do Control Panel >> System >> Advanced >> Performance. You likely have the default settings right now, and these aren't very good for video encoding.

BTW, when you do see freezes and large macroblocking on the backup, the chances are that the file on the HD will do the same thing when viewed through a player. This is a good way to check if it is the media or the HD. It's not 100%, but if it is jerky on the HD...it won't be any different on the backup.

Not real sure I know what I was doing but I got it changed to 4000 min and max. Funny thing the copy's play fine on my pc. I'll bet your advice will fix the problem. I do use a spyware removal tool prior to any rip/burn's. Thanks Doc.

Briefly, virtual memory is memory temporarily stored on your hard drive because RAM can't do it all. XP lays this down as "page files". You told XP how you wanted it done for this video app, which is the most demanding thing you can ask your computer to do. All of us that have been doing this for awhile have made this change, so not to worry that it is something that will cause you problems. It will avoid them.

I overlooked the part about "the copies play fine on my PC." This is a common sign of a media compatability problem. Did you possibly switch from Ritek +R to -R, or vice-versa? It sounds more like an issue between the standalone player and the media. 'Sorry I overlooked that.

This is a good site to check for media and player compatability.

It's the exact same media branded ritek ridata
g04 dvd-r. I've made 3 backups since I defraged
and made those other changes and they were all
perfect copy's. Thanks, learning everyday.
Btw does the new version of shrink automatically delete the vidio file from
your hd? I went to delete it and it wasn't
there. Maybe I already did and forgot.

Well, it sounds like the defrag fixed the problem? Let's hope so, anyway. What we are doing with this video stuff is very demanding, and it doesn't take much to fall off the tracks.

If you don't make/choose a destination folder, Shrink will make an Audio_ts and a Video_ts folder for you on the main drive. Those folders/files will stay there until you erase them, or are otherwise replaced by a subsequent rip.

There are some files that stay behind unless you manually delete them. I believe these are for the initial 2 minutes of analysis, and the deep analysis results. If you've ever noticed, you don't have to do deep analysis more than once. My W2K files are located in this dir. structure:

C:\Documents and Settings >> All Users.WNITT >> Application Data >> DVD Shrink

good luck.
