I'm using some maxell dvd-r's in order to backup some media, however, I can't seem to get my DVD-RW drive to acknowledge that there's a blank disc sitting in the drive, so I can't get to the actual backing up process...I was wondering if there's any ideas someone might have (or am I just screwed, and might as well put these DVD-R's to rest)..thanks!

I'm sorry, I forgot to include the essentials. I just received the burner with my new computer. The burner is an internal TEAC DVD+RW DV-W85E 8X Drive, I've only tried the Maxell with it thus far and My computer does recognize the drive. Hope that clarifies, thank you.
Did the drive come in a new Dell by chance? I recognize that model drive as one that comes with Dells.
If the media you're trying is -R that could be the problem right there since your drive recognizes +R media only.
Thanks to big idiot corporations who couldn't agree with each other we're stuck dealing with two different formats for DVDs, "+" and "-". Most burners sold nowadays are dual format which means they recognize both + and - media but for whatever reason Dell chose to go with the single format +R Teac for some their systems.
Just as a "heads up" some people are having trouble with the Teac drives while trying to burn to +R media although it seems to burn fine to +RW. Here's a previous thread concerning your drive:
