Samsung says 2014 is last year for their plasma TVs

article published on 5 July, 2014

Prospective plasma TV buyers beware: Another major OEM is dropping out the market. Samsung SDI has announced this week that it will be stopping all production on PDP (plasma display panels) by the end of November, marking the end of an era for the company. Waiting for the day? How are plasmas having a detrimental effect on you and keeping you from living life to its fullest? I don't understand.

Joking aside, plasma is still great. The problem isn't that plasma is "bad"; plasma is actually better when it comes to true-to-life colors and blacks, and has better viewing angles. The problem is that there are just too many cheap junk lcd's being dumped on the market. People don't know the difference or just don't care. They see the super bright, over saturated colors and think that's how tv is suppose to be.

Also it's basically impossible to make 4K Plasma and as stated with over-saturation of LCDs and now with OLEDs coming unfortunately plasma has lost it's place in the market. As an only plasma owner, no LCD TVs for me, it's a sad day. I may have to buy a Samsung plasma to keep an extra around for longevity but I think I'll just stick with my Panasonic. Too bad Pioneer stopped the Kuro so quickly.

On the plus side, Panny bought the Kuro technology, and its latest plasmas actually managed to improve in it.

I will truly miss the response, fidelity, depths, and versatility of plasmas. Couldn't keep up with the high saturation of a wall of sun facing windows, but dominated, and for a much lower price, in a light controlled environment.

The march to mediocrity pushes ever steadily forth.
