Artificial Intelligence may kill us all, warns Stephen Hawking

article published on 4 December, 2014

Hawking warns again that Artificial Intelligence could one day destroy humanity, while acknowledging that the early primitive forms of A.I. we currently utilize have been very helpful. He reiterated his fear of the potential of A.I. to bring about the end of human civilization as we know it in an interview with the BBC. "The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the ... [ read the full article ]

On the question of whether Artificial Intelligence is even possible, most who chime in on the subject seem to be sure that it is. Why wouldn't they be? Natural intelligence exists, and if nature can create it, then why can't it be reverse engineered?
So long as they come with Artificial Stupidity we'll be safe.

keep the head in the jar and it is of no consequence, only when you give it a body will it ever become a threat.

It sounds like Stephen Hawking is just getting too excited to see the new Terminator movie.

It will be a century before we will have to truly need to worry about that, but he is definitely right about AI, we are our worst enemies and we don't learn from our past.

Terrorists kill over 2,977 women, children, and men all civilians during 911 and didn't kill even 1 official or militant, there are many more attacks like that. I certainly don't want any innocent people killed but 28 to 1 is much better then what we have put up with. Also that was calculated by a human rights group in the UK so how accurate is it? Are all of the supposed innocent casualties truly that? Now this isn't really the place for this discussion either.

Our descendants may find it necessary or at least helpful to turn themselves into cyborgs of a sort, in order to withstand the physical stresses of space flight. We arent likely to be able to navigat 'wormholes' with the fragile biology we are limited by. Maybe our intelligence is useful for us to create the means to survive in a world we can only imagine right now, and that says nothing about parallel universes and the stresses of navigating to an from them (if they exist).

Not as fragile as you think.

only thing stopping humanity from progress are short sighted fools. those with the money to change the world only care about self satisfaction, while those with the will to shape dreams into reality cant afford to. this path humanity walks will not destroy us, it will simply make us seek destruction.

The sad part is that even the "primitive" AI we currently use is already smarter than some people... ;)

Gosh, how naive you are.
Sure Bill Gates made a huge amount of money in the past, and still continues to do so.
But he is an extremely generous man and you should read up about his charitable foundations, he's donated billions of dollars to charity.
More mega-wealthy people should act like he is, rather than hoarding their wealth.

"Charitable" "donations" don't earn you any points when they're for fund genocide, population control, and further extreme communism. All he's doing with his money is buying his way into deeper circles of hell.

Population control is one of the biggest issues facing the earth, current population growth globally is unsustainable.
As far as funding extreme communism and genocide, I don't know what drug you're smoking.

Population control is one of the biggest lies the evil men and communists use to justify their actions and mass murder. How many times have we claimed the earth can't support this number, and it's been proven false? Nice to know you think you know better who lives and who dies. Perhaps we'd have been better off without Tesla and Edison, Washington and Jefferson?

No, I will not allow you to misdirect the subject by stating a false pretense.

the issue is human nature, the population is now at a point where humans destructive nature is causing harm to the planet. A quick glance at human history will tell you change only ever comes after the the damage has been done. Starvation, Disease, Waste Handling, Coastal Flooding. these are things that will happen in a hundred years, with the repercussions lasting thousands of years.

the only way to change coarse is to change the very foundation humanity has built its empire on.

@ Mr-Movies

Not that I'm a brainwashed American Patriot, but I just don't trust the biased news, corps. or U.S. Govt.

Example:
America Dream Lie
Around "4O0" American Killed by Police each year: FBI Report.

America Awake Truth
This year (2014) alone, U.S. Police have killed +1,029 America Citizens (so far)

@ChikaraNZ

If we put all the cities and towns of the whole planet in one place. It will occupy the land of the U.S. Texas State only.
We also have the rest of the world to cultivate food; witch now on day the production of food is bigger in small spaces, thanks to technology.

On the another hand. Capitalism Greed (Using War, poverty, etc. as tools) is unsustainable.

Live Free or Die.
The rule above all the rules is: Survive !
Capitalism: Funnel most of the $$$ to the already rich.

When you look at our population and the fact that there is no background on those numbers, which is normally the problem with statistics, it's still a very low percentage, extremely low and you need to apply the proper prospective. All countries have their problems but the facts are that typically/mostly/if not always, the US doesn't take advantage of other countries. We died for others and have not taken the land away from those we've helped and you can't say that about most countries that have power. Your hatred is misplaced. FYI, I don't believe most of what the media spews or any government spews, but on occasion like any of us I can be pulled in too.
