After using DVD shrink, it opens Decrypter but before it burns I get this message:

DeviceIoControl (FSCTL_LOCK_VOLUME) FAILED!
Device: [1:1:0] _NEC_DVD_RW ND-1300A 1.05(E)
Unable to lock volume for exclusive access.
Reason:L Access is denied.

Is this because the DVD did not "decrypt" and is still copy protected? What I did was to basically follow the guide for using DVD shrink on this website, but I might have messed something up.

Is this error common? I failed to find reference to it myself.

Thanks for any help.

Hi,

From the looks of it Decrypter is not able to gain exclusive access to the drive and is very unhappy about it.

Usually this error is caused by a packet writing app such as Nero InCD, DLA or Drag to Disc. Part of the way these apps work is by keeping constant access to the drive. If you have any of these it may help to uninstall them.

Another cause may be Windows built in IMAPI CD burning service. It's useless and best disabled anyway.

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > scroll down to "IMAPI CD Burning COM" and double click it. Under "Startup Type" select disabled.

I had deleted Nero. I don't think I have any of the other programs listed and I did the IMAPI thing, but the same problem occured when I tried to use decrypter again...

:(

Could there be any other programs like EZ-CD creator or anything that I should get rid of?

edit: thanks for the help, by the way. I appreciate it.

No one said you had to get rid of Nero. Just Nero InCD. It's not the burning programs themselves but the packet writing software they often included.

Direct CD or Drag to Disk: These are applications from Easy CD Creator from Roxio. This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start Windows. To remove them you need to go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. There you can select Easy CD Creator to Change - not Remove. Then you click next until it gives you the option to Modify. Then either Direct CD or Drag to Disk should be selected and changed to "make this option not available". Then click Next. While the program may look like it is installing, it is actually removing those options.
For more information, please visit Roxio's website at http://www.roxio.com/en/support.index.jhtml

This is a list for people using DVDXCopy software but it would probably apply in this case as well.

Most people on this forum keep Nero and get rid of Roxio (EZ-CD creator) software.

i think patience is the correct word to be used. You have to remember that the folks here that try to help are from all over the world and some are asleep while we are posting so it might be a while before you get your answer. But rest assured that they will eventually solve your problem if you are patient. They get pleasure out of helping others and receive nothing but our thanks in the end.

I had the same error as you did vsp. In the newest version of DVD decrypter I went to 'tools' 'settings' 'iso write mode' tab and unchecked the box that says "lock volume-exclusive access" and for the heck of it I chose 'DVD' as the write mode instead of 'auto' I was then able to burn with DVD decrypter with excellent results. I too will try the above methods concerning the packets...

Sorry, I was being sarcastic.

No offense intended. I, of course, appreciate the effort from everyone.

I also had the same error and found no relief after un-installing Roxio's Drag-to-disk. elgm2003's suggestion worked fine but I was not satisfied I had found the "right" solution. Then I remembered that XP has it's own built-in version of Drag-to-disk. I right-clicked on the DVD burner in My Computer, clicked on Properties and then the Recording tab. From there, I unchecked the "Enable CD recording on this drive" box. Decrypter has worked as expected since. Thanks to elgm2003 for the Band-aid, Veblin for the instructions to rid my machine of Roxio's horrid D-t-d and to vsp for asking the question so long ago - without which Google would not have had anything meaningful to find. :)
