Microsoft: Original Xbox games on Xbox One 'not impossible'

article published on 26 November, 2015

Now that the Xbox One can play Xbox 360 games using emulation, there has been a call to bring older generation Xbox games to the console. Xbox engineering boss Mike Ybarra says "nothing's impossible" in regards to bringing first-generation Xbox games to the new console, although he did say the team is focused on making more and more 360 games work rather than looking back. Phil Spencer ... [ read the full article ]

It should be even easier than 360, considering the CPU architecture should be fully compatible with original Xbox's Celeron-based CPU. The console's CPU alone is probably fast enough to not even need the GPU to correctly render everything (MAME-style accuracy over speed).

Of course though, Microsoft is not looking for people to use the Xbox One to play old games (many of which are not even really for sale anymore). Even if they did have full compatibility, it would be via the store, not with your original game discs.

This generation backwards-compatibility has been downplayed more so than ever before. But then again, nobody was surprised that Super Nintendo could not play NES games. It must be the fact the interface, that is the disc drive, making people think 'why not?' (Everyone knew a NES cartridge could not fit in a SNES so it made sense to not expect it to work.)

This makes no sense to me,backwards compat means just that & since an emulator is what it is then original disc games will work fine, not that it could tell a digital from a disc, since the source material whether downloaded or installed by disc or direct use of disc without install & it's structure are one & the same no matter where it comes from.perhaps you haven't seen how the folder structure & the games execution works ? an example would be looking at any software or game installed into a windows pc.Once you open the installed software folder you'll find a few shortcuts, some folders & txt's,one of those shortcuts is the software executer an xbox game is no different

The problem, scorpNZ, is that M$ and Sony WANT you to redownload the game, as an additional purchase.

You do know that you can pop in a 360 disc and (if it has been supported) if will download the digital copy, right? You don't need to buy the game again.

That would be handy for those with damaged discs so long as it can be detected & the xex (contains info on the game) can be read
