I have used DVDShrink 3.2 and DVD Decrypter numerous times to back up my DVD's without problem. Now with a couple new DVD's, Starsky and Hutch and Secret Window, it doesn't work. It goes through all the motions like normal until it starts to burn. Instead of the 15 minutes it takes to burn it to a disk it takes 5 and doesn't work. Apparently some kind of new technique to stop copying. Any idea on how to get around this problem?

Thanks

I used dvdshrink at burnatonce to backup both of these from my collection on to Verbatim DVD-R. Didn't have any problems at all.

whenever someone can't copy a dvd, they say "it must be a new kind of copy protection". There is no new protection, you must just have some bad discs. I've done both of those movies with no problems.

Do you use DVDshrink and DVD Decrypter too?
I have used the same discs for at least 30 other DVD's and have never had a problem. I've copied other movies of mine fine with discs from the same pack. I've wasted 5 discs trying these two movies so far. So its not the discs. I've read at other websites that in europe this is becoming a more frequent problem. I don't understand the termonology to completely understand how it's used, but it is out there.

I see that you do use DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. Any idea why out of the blue it won't burn correctly? I don't use Nero, would that be it?

yeah, i used Nero to burn, but that shouldn't be your problem. You could, however, download a free trial of Nero and see if it works. What brand dvds are you using? Just because some worked, doesn't mean there isn't a few bad ones in the pack.

I don't have them in front of me, but I think there by Sony. I can imagine a few bad ones in a pack, but 5 of them? When I get home I guess I'll go through the steps very carefully again and make sure I'm not doing something wrong.

Thanks for your help.

Sony discs should be fine. Have you downloaded the latest version of DVD Decrypter?

bohn25...

It is possible to have a bad source DVD. It is rare, however. This freeware utility will tell you if there are any read errors. It also does a lot of other neat things...like check your blank media. You'll see. To use the main features, look to the top of the panel for a horizontal row of icons.

I did both movies and they worked fine (I use DVD Shrink 3.1 and Nero 6). For some strange reason DVD Shrink 3.2 won't work properly in my computer (the preview screen won't work) so maybe you can try ripping with DVD Shrink 3.1?

Thank you everyone for your help. I went home last night and went over everything very carefully and everything looked ok. When I checked my burnable DVD's the last half of the pack all have hair line cracks!! They are very small, but they're there. I'm sorry to have wasted everyone's time. It was a stupid mistake that won't happen again.
Thank you again everyone. The responses were very appreciated. Sorry.

I had something come up with Starsky and Hutch also. When I tryed to backup, it said something like R.C.E. and I had to specify region or something. I haven't done but a handful of movies, but this is the first I've seen. Just wondering what it is.

It's another version of copy protection. If it causes problems, run the files through Decrypter first.

yeah, every once and a while it asks for the region (didn't ask me for that one though).

randomneb, R.C.E. is region, just check whatever region you're in and it will be fine.

bohn, media makes a HUGE difference, don't ever doubt it, as you found out. Meritline has branded Ritek G04's for .52 ea. per 100 w/free shipping. I suggest you get a pack. Good media doesn't necessarily mean expensive.

Doc, a lot of the time(not all) if your source is bad, when shrink first analyzes you will see little red spikes indicating corrupted video. I just tried to backup Ned Kelly and had this problem, shrink nor decrypter could read one of the VOB's and I couldn't back it up.

bigorange...while I have had several discs that Shrink nor Decrypter couldn't read, I have only come across one that SmartRipper couldn't. And DVD InfoTools found read errors all over the place. I know that SmartRipper isn't supported anymore, but it still works great.

Hey doc, you still up? That west coast time, huh?

Ya know, I've got smartripper(used to use it quite a bit), didn't even think about using it, but I did try it on Harry Potter 2 special features disc when shrink and decrypter wouldn't work and it didn't either. I may give it a go on Ned Kelly, nothing to lose.

SR gives a nice readout. If there are small scratches, try some furniture polish. IF SR won't work, DVD InfoTools will likely go crazy with read errors.

It's about midnight here. I'm getting Batch ready right now, then to the sack. Are you going to catch the sun?

I believe there may be a simple fix here. I am presuming you are using Shrink 3.2 with deep analysis and special features, since you mention a 3 hour encode time?

What often happens is that the ending file is just a little too big for the DVD, and that why things fail at the very end of burning, i.e., "could not perform end of disc at once."

Most people use custom compression on the menu and extras, and automatic compression on the movie. Presuming this is the way you do it, when you get to this point, change the movie to custom also, and back the green bar back to 4400. This will give you a smaller file that will burn OK.

Also, any type of copy protection would have tried to prevent you from encoding the files, which you did successfully, otherwise Nero would have given a different error message. BTW, Nero identified your media as RICOH, so congrats on using good media.
