I just purchased a NEC ND-2510A which is supposed to be a dual format dvd burner. The first day I got it, it worked fine, and I actually burned a couple of DVD's, but for some reason now it wont even read a DVD. It only seems to read CD's now, and if any DVD format disk is put into the drive, a message box appears reading " insert disk into E:"
Any help that anyone can give would be great.
Thanks
It may help to uninstall the drive through Device Manager as this sometimes cures the problem.
Go to My Computer and right click the drive in question. Now go to Properties and then click the Properties tab. Now click the Driver tab, select Uninstall and then OK. Now reboot and see if the problem is still there.

I did what you recommended and uninstalled the drive. At startup, the drive was found again and installed, but it still didnt recognize any DVD, even factory DVDs. I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but I forgot to mention that the DVD drive in question is cased in an external case, and connected to my laptop through a USB 2.0 port.
Do you have another PC you can try the burner in? Just to rule out something with your system.
If it won't recognize factory DVDs in the other system I'd be inclined to think the drive is defective. You mentioned that you'd just purchased it so it shouldn't be too hard to get a new one.

I missed the external case part! Are all of connections inside the case secure? If it's possible to do so you may try installing the drive into a desktop PC to rule out a defective external case.

Thanks for all your help. My burner works now, but I dont really understand why. All I did was use the System Restore in Windows XP and restored it to a couple of days before I first installed the burner. I tried it and now it runs fine. Weird. Well thanks a lot for your help.
