burning dvd,s.... how to make my files compatible??

Hi all, a newbie here for sure. I just joined the rest of the world and finally got a DVD burner. It came with Nero and Im trying to burn some of my video files to a dvd that will play in my DVD players. I have read the answeres to most of the questions before me i think i have a grasp on it... My question is this, How do i make the files (video) that are already on my hard drive compatible with this Nero Express program? Every time i try to add one to the Video_ts folder, a message pops up saying the file is not compatible. What else do I need to do to accomplish this? I have a good amount of home movies on my computer i want to turn into playable DVD'S for my family.
