I left my computer to analyse and encode a dvd last night. I had 14 gigs left of memory. More than enough. But after analyzing it was 17 % encoding and an out of memory screen popped up while using shrink. What gives ? I did some searching and have not found anything that sounds like this. any help please.

It could boil down to system usage. Your free space is used by the system as well as the recording program. So, you would shut down before the sytem locks up. Sounds like you may have been pushing your HD to the limit. It is a good idea to keep from 12 to 14 GB free for recording. That means you also need more free space than that on the HD for the OS to function. Sounds like you may need to free up some additional free space on the HDD for the software to work and have room for the OS (operating system) to operate as well. This may not be the problem, but it's the first thing I would check out. Free up as much space as you can and try again. Let us know what happens.

Thats the simple fix, if space is the problem. Otherwise, I'll have to ask you a lot of questions.
Like, what PC model are you using, CPU size and speed, amount of RAM, and the size of the HDD and amount of free space? Also, what operating system are you using? Hopefully XP. And how old is the unit and how much has it been used? Have to be a real snoop to trouble shoot some of these problems. In other words, if creating more space didn't solve the problem, I need the info in question.

Let us know what happens.

"chthomson" offered in another thread the following ; "For repeated DMA errors, Windows XP will turn off DMA for a device after encoutering certain errors during data transfer operations. If more than six DMA transfer timeouts occur, Windows will turn off DMA and use only PIO mode on that device".

Could be a lead in to the problem.

Thanks for the input, but I don't believe DMA and PIO have anything to do with this problem unless jlg895 is leaving something out. Switching from DMA to PIO causes a severe change in operation speed. Changes from operations done in minutes to hours. The problem is stated as the program aborting due to lack of memory capacity. If the speed changes drastically, then he should check to make sure his drive is set in DMA and not PIO. Some problems can lead to others.

I think brobear is right on this one. 14 gigs sounds like a lot of hard disk space but you really should have closer to 20 gigs. Did you measure the available space before or after you ripped the DVD. If before then there's probably a good 8 or 7 gigs less right there. Now you have to transcode the movie and that's going to take up at least another 4.3 gigs and then the swapping of files that takes place during transcoding and you're out of space.

What operating system are you using?
