hi i just bought my copy of "passion" and i want to back it up, but when ever i try i get a narrative overdub. i left common and english subtitles as well as language in lattin and english and tried no subtitles and just english as the language. i used dvd shrink to get the vob files. does anyone know how to get it right? like at the movies with just the subtitles?

I tried out 4 videos (mines,a friends and 2 were rented) with the same problem in the same exact place!!! With DVD Decrypter i ripped off the whole disc except for the VTS_04_1_vob file!(it gives me error, but only with that file!) I tried using DVD Shrink (latest version)but while analysing the disc stopped at 26%!With SmartRipper it will not even open up even while the video is playin, just gets access error! Hope that someone can help us out!!

I had no problems using the newest versions of both Shrink & Decrypter and a copy of Passion purchased from Best Buy. I left all the menus in (the first try i took out the menus and left all audio options checked and i got the narator talking) and took out latin subtitles only. the movie came out perfect.

Are you sure you took out latin sub's? Because I only have english and spanish subtitles.

I don't think the problem is with ripping. It's either in the process of encoding/compressing or you player.
You all know the movie is in Latin, right?

i checked again and i had 3 options for subtitles, latin being one. but since the spoken language in the movie is latin (aramaic actually), i don't need the latin subs. i left in english and spanish. that was the only thing i removed.

I downloaded the latest version of both DVD Shrink it and DVD Decrypter.
I am still have the same problems as everyone else. MAybe the store bought one versus the one you rent like from block busters have different protection schems on them?
Anyhow I get that same narrative voice even after ripping with the latest version of DVD Shrink it. But my prior email does ask what setting I need to make good RIps.
DVD-decrypter gives me this message when I start it.
Possible RCE protection found
Please select the region of the disks cover/case/box.
So what is wrong ? It looks liek I cannot rip this DVD or what?

I just updated to the latest version of DVD Shrink it.
THere are preferences and when you click backup there are more option tabs.
WHat would you recommned?
These are my current settings:
Under Preferences:
Preferences:Last two cheked
Preview: I chose stero which is the default and System Fedualt Renderer but my friend said to choose "Overlay Mixer"?
Output FIles: I left as default first 4 chekced.
Stream selections: Left at default but my friend chose english for the first filed then checked disable at bottom and AC3 instead of AC3 and LPCM?
File I/O: Left at default third one checked and unchecked Nero because I want to burn with Nero. SHoudl I re-check it? I want to lauchn Nero and mnaully slide in the VOB files etc.
After that I click Re-Author then slode the Main title only into the left field then choose backup:
On the backup menu is a new TAB Stream should I leave that at default?
There are only a couple of tabs I question:
Qaultiy Settings: Should I leave them at default? They are empty fields at default. This seems to be a new feature in this latest version? a are few newer versions.
Options: Leave everything at default? I question the first one run backup in low priotity mode?
Can anyone help me with these settings the guide does not help you with them, and the guid does not mention to you to re-author before backup which is weird.

As far as preferences, i leave everything at "default" except that i uncheck the previews and i burn with DVD Decryptor, not Nero. As far as the Quality settings, i've tried them all (when the compressino is less than 100%) and i find that using the Deep Compression scan(top box) and the "Sharp" option in the bottom box work the best. I also leave the options at default, but i don't run in low priority mode. i believe that is there if you want to work on something else while you're burning, which i wouldn't recommend.

So were you able to successfully rip and burn the passion of christ with the latest version of shrink it?
Maybe instaed of burning with Nero I should try DVD Decrypter . I am still getting the narrative part so I cannot figure out what is wrong?

I ripped and burned it no problem. I used the latest DVD Decrypter to rip it, and shrink to compress and burn it (with Nero burning checked). No problems at all. One thing I would recommend though, is to not get rid of any subtitles at all. This whole movie is in latin, so you're gonna have to read everything. I forget exactly how, but I ended up with 2 english's. I believe one was closed captioning and the other was a subtitle. (Not a lot of difference between the two, but sound effects are written in the closed captioning, which is annoying).
I use this decrypter/shrink combo for everything I do, and I have backed up over a hundred movies. No problems ever. This is an interesting point though, because on other threads I hear rumors of Ned Kelly and Harry Potter not ripping right, and I did Ned Kelly just to see for myself. Guess what? No problems.
I have a theory that the problem you guys have may be computer related - perhaps not enough ram, or maybe not the right brand drive.
My computer is AMD 2700+ on Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe mobo with 1.5GB ram and Plextor PX712A burner and Liteon SOHD-167T DVD-rom.

THis time I tried to rip Passion of Christ with the latest DVD Decrypter 3.5.1.0 and Right when it starts I get a message Possible RCE protection window and I cannot choose another region? it is locked into USA, Canada!!
So How do I change this? Or do I need to change it in order for it to rip it correctly? SOmeone said a few posts up to just change the region but its locked in.
It looks like this DVD is totally protected from ripping with any tools at all or if not what is going on?

Great!! THanks!! seems to be working so far perfectly. I did not get the RCE protection popup window this time with AnyDVD running in the backgound.
Now shoudl I use Elaborbits CloneDVD or stick with DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink it?
Is there any other software out there that works like AnyDVD?
Example will Elborite BYtes CloneDVD work as an all in one or you still need AnyDVD to run in the background?
I have to try this on The Movie Twisted as well. I got some File I/O errors somewhere around 42% and the disk seems clean with no major scratches.

Ok it ripped fine and burned with Nero but I am still getting that irriating NArrative part and I do not hear any of the actors voices at all.
Can you tell me what I need to check or uncheck before I Re-author.

None of these were check expect the one I said 3. AC3 2-ch English.
Has anyone else seen this as I have it now. Video compression is 69.5%
THis is my forth DVD with the same results. Can someone please help me on this or is this a lost cause.

I think I can help you with these things you don't understand. Lets take it one at a time:
AC3 5.1 English is normal surround sound. 2 Channel English is stereo without surround sound. DTS 5.1 is Digital Theater Surround. Basically DTS is far less compressed audio and takes up about twice as much space as AC3 format does. You need a DVD player with a DTS decoder built into it to be able to hear the sound. Most good DVD players (for home) these days have DTS decoders, and there will be a small badge on the front of them saying DTS. Some cheap and older players may not have DTS. For computers, so far most players Ive tried that I didn't have to actually buy don't have a DTS decoder built in, but I know you can buy a better one that does if you want to play the movies on your computer. Uncheck any of these you want to delete. Because audio does not compress, keeping all the audio choices can take up disk space quick (on the dvd). I usually delete everything but AC3 so I don't have to give up much movie quality. A lot of movies will shrink without any compression if you get rid of the menus and extras and keep just the movie itself, and AC3 5.1 English. If its important to you to keep all the different languages and styles of audio, the movie is going to have to compress more to fit it on a normal disk because most DVDs (with the exception of fairly new aftermarket Dual Layer expensive disks) are 4.7GB. The original movies most of the time are on a dual layer disk, so they can take up 9 GB or so. What were doing here is putting 7-9 GB of data on a 4.7GB disk, so we have to either sacrifice quality and compress it more, or we have to shave the fat off (i.e. cut the menus, interviews, and any other extras) to get it to fit without compressing the heck out of it.
As for the subtitles, they don't really use up much space at all, so I usually keep them. You had better keep them on Passion of Christ, unless you speak Latin!
If you don't hear any voices at all, try hitting the audio button on your dvd remote, which will select a different audio (of the available ones, AC3 5.1, DTS 5.1, stereo, french, spanish, etc.) Of course you'll only be able to toggle between the ones you kept and didn't delete.
Another thing that might help you is in DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink there is a choice to "Remove PUO's". That stands for Prohibited User Operations. These PUO's are what stops you from having to go to the audio menu on your player and selecting different audios from there. With PUO's removed, you can change the audio selection while watching the movie (in other words, on the fly). If you don't remove the PUOs, and you get rid of most of the languages, you may find yourself where you are defaulted to the "deleted" audio selection, and you don't have a menu to go to because you deleted them too, so in short you can't hear anything, and you can't switch to another one.
If you're english, and just want a simple combination that will work and shave the most fat off the movie, try doing the following steps:
Check all of the "remove PUOs" boxes in all the different menus of decrypter under Tools>Settings>
Decrypt with DVD Decrypter
Check all the "remove PUOs" boxes in DVD Shrink
Load the movie into Shrink (Open Files..)
Reauthor, and drag the main movie only over to the left side of the screen
Uncheck everything in audio, except for AC3 5.1 Latin
Leave all the subtitles checked
That should do it. When you start playing the movie in your home player, you will most likely have to hit the subtitles button to see the English, and maybe the audio button to hear the Latin. In my case, when I first played the movie I found that Latin was already playing, but no subtitles were and I had to hit the subtitle button on my DVD remote to see the English translation. It's not a lost cause, you just have to familiarize yourself with Decrypter and Shrink a little. For some reason, those programs chose not to remove the PUO's by default. The PUO's also are real good for not allowing you to fast forward or hit NEXT while displaying previews and FBI warnings. Good luck.

I think where I screwed up was exactly what you had mentioned about making sure I had all those options checked.
Also choosing Latin for sound.
Can I leave all "PUO's" enabled for all DVD rips now or shoudl I put it back to default settings? which is safer to do or best to do?

I checked all the boxes I could for remove PUO's. I can't really think of any reason anybody would want a PUO, except when their kid is playing with the remote in the middle of a good movie :)
I like removing them so you can fast forward or skip the stupid warnings and previews on movies you backup 100% (single-layer originals).
Also, I don't know everything about RCE's, but maybe this will answer some of your questions. RCE is region code. Each drive has to have its region set. Im in region 1, usa. The idea behind RCE protection is so that each factory produced movie can only be released to a certain country when the movie-sellers want it to. Or at least that's how it was explained to me. One of the options in decrypter (or was it shrink?) is to remove region code protection. Then that burned copy will be able to play in any dvd player in the world, not just in one in your same region.
There are hacked firmwares you can download that get rid of region code protection on your drive, but that's not entirely all it takes to make your computer avoid the region code setting on the disc. Do a search on region free firmware, and you'll find plenty of info. There's a RCE1.org (or something like that) website that's good for that.
Anyway, RCE protection hasn't really been a hinderance to me, because i'm backing up region 1 discs. If I were taking discs from another country and trying to back them up, then RCE protection would be high on my priority list. I don't even have a region free drive.
If you want to learn more about this DVD game, I would suggest looking at the menus in decrypter and then getting online and searching for what the heck they're talking about on each item. Chances are you'll end up with a valuable education that way. Or look at the decrypter and shrink official websites. Good luck.

Oh, one more thing on the quality settings on shrink... They are greyed out (uncheckable) if the disk is at or near 100% (no shrinking). They can only be checked if you start to compress a disk. The top box does something like scan every frame instead of every 100 frames for copy protection and/or quality I think. The bottom box I belive scans the finished movie over one more time and looks for bad spots and then fills in the bad spots with something appropriate.
That's not fact there, that's just the way I understand it to be. Check it out for yourself on the shrink site.

The DVD Passion Of The Christ uses Sony's ARccOS copy protection mechanism. Essentially, it is a corrupt disc, which prevents it from being read in many DVD ripping and backup programs.
Download DVD Decrypter 3.5.1.0, released on 2 Sep. It beats the copy protection.
Using DVD Decrypter, press F to get into files mode, then make sure ALL files are selected and rip to your favorite directory. Then use DVD Shrink or your favorite backup program to do the rest.
KEEP IN MIND that this movie is spoken in Aramaic (or Latin as indicated by the DVD IFO), and you must KEEP the Latin track if you want a normal movie, otherwise you are stuck with English Narrative only. It might also be a good idea to keep the Enlish subtitles, unless of course you are fluent in 2000 year old Hebrew! :)

DVD Decrypter has three modes you can choose from when reading and ripping a DVD:
File Mode: This treats the DVD as a simple UDF data disc and reads (and decrypts) all FILES on the disc in order.
ISO Mode: This reads and decrypts a DVD sector by sector and stores the data in an ISO file with MDS file.
IFO Mode: This mode allows the user to rip selected program chains, chapters or cells based on the characteristics in the IFO files.
Most users will rip using the Files Mode or the ISO Mode. The IFO Mode is there really only if you want to rip one certain portion of the disc without ripping it all (like when ripping one episode of Futurama.)
In most cases on single layer DVD-5 discs, I choose to rip using ISO Read, and then write with ISO Write directly from DVD Decrypter.
In most cases on dual layer DVD-9 discs, I choose to rip and recode at once with DVD Shrink.
You can use either ISO or Files modes to rip Passion of the Christ, but in ripping to ISO, you would then have to employ a third party tool such as Daemon Tools in order to make the ISO readable as a disc by DVD Shrink and many other shrink programs.
To specifically answer your question: to rip Passion, choose File mode, as it will be easiest and least time consuming in the long run. For other unprotected DVDs, your choice of ripping mode will be dictated by the size of the disc and the intended output.
