After trawling through 27 pages of posts on speeding up my downloads for torrent files I became so disheartened that I was just about to reformat c, when i decided on a different approach.

My current system is
P3 1GHZ 512 Mg Ram
Running Windows XP / SP2
1MG Wanadoo broadband usb connection.

I had previously used bit tornado however I was told that this was not compliant with all torrents, and changed to G3 torrent at my peril.

After reading the postings in the forum on speeding up connections, and carrying out the port forwarding routine in windows xp I was still receiving very poor downloads. Couldn't do any setting within the modem, so finally decided to change my client.

I have installed the latest version of bitcomet and I am amazed in the difference, as i type I am receiving four torrents at a rate of 120KB/s with my outgoing set at 20kb global, no strain really on my other browsing function, and even sets it's own ports open. Fixes multiple IP problems from SP2 too.

I would imagine many readers will have the thomson usb set up due to the wanadoo promotion, and after labouring with other clients I have found this to be the best so far.

If anybody with the same setup knows how to get a bit more, I would welcome their advice.

Thanks

Stephen

I'm not a super expert, but I never had anything but trouble with ME running anything to do with the speedtouch. I upgraded to XP home, upgraded it with SP2, installed 512MB of ram, used the built in firewall in XP, then finally changed my client to www.bitcomet.com. This client is in my opinion superb and very user friendly, maybe try downloading it first before you change your OS. Let me know how you manage please.

I think the first thing to try is to make sure your global upload rate is set to 20Kb. Let me know if this makes a difference.

Do you have a firewall installed? What windows system are you using, have you installed SP2, also the torrent you are downloading makes a difference. Try suprnova and find one that has a lot of seeds, maybe a music cd, I usually get speeds 50Kb on multiple downloads. To give you an idea though, I am currently downloading 2 music cd torrents, and three xbox torrents at a cumulative down of 120Kb/s and up of 20Kb/s. The music cd's have much more seeds so they are going much quicker than the xbox ones.

I have speedtouch 330, and using either BitTornado, Shadow experimental, or Azureus I get d/l speeds up to 50KB/s. Some torrents run slower than others, just depends on how many seeds and peers are in the torrent. I have a 512KB connection, so speeds of 50KB/s are not that bad.

Before Speedtouch, I used Netgear Router/modem, with similar speeds, but don't expect much more than 50KB/s (remember that 50(K)ilo(B)ytes is equivalent to 400(K)ilo(b)its).

I have found the most important key to faster downloads for myself is to use ports out of the p2p range 6881-6999 only because I feel the most ISP's probably throttle these ports. I use Azureus and have it configured to use ports in the 8000-9000 range and rarely see my download speeds below 50k. Generally it hovers between 80k to 160k. Everybody knows that a lot depends on how many people are seeding. But that would be something else that everybody could try. It may not solve the entire problem of slow downloads for everybody but some may find a huge improvement.

Get off the POT!

i really think that moving to bit comet will solve a lot of peoples problems. i have used just about all the torrents programmes and comet is by far the best. i get up to 950kb download and up to 2mb/s up. yes its true btu then again i had to remove sp2. if you have slow downllaod with comet try increasing your upload limit. yes some times it will actually help with you dl. dont ask why i just know it does
