I posted this elsewhere on this site, but I did some testing of my own:

So I also jumped into this market and ordered many many many hp gdr 6162b and 8163b. I am not advertising, but I am here to confirm that the HP drives work perfectly. Moreover, the difference between the 8163b and the 8162b is pretty big. It takes about an extra hour to rawdump an 8163b, as you can see from my screenshots (again, that's my ebay name, but I am not advertising here, I just made those pics for my ad):

So if you look at the read rate during ripping, you notice that the 8162b is much faster than the 8163b, and moreover, the final completion time is was shorter for the 2. I tested these drives using both ide cable and then usb to ide with no additional drivers. All tests were done on xp pro. Hope this helps!

Lite-On DVD SOHD-16P9S
Well... it's not an LG drive. It's not even related to the LG drives that work. I'd venture a guess and say "Nope. not gonna work. . . Read the thread."

My post is legitimate the lite on SOHD-16P9S is comparable to the lg gdr 8163b this is a website where it even compares the 2
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/...=13542&PageId=1
If this drive is comparable and rips wii discs I am sure some people would be interested. I have the drive and I will be testing it i guess. Any feedback would be cool.

If you don;t succeed at first, you may want to try different firmware versions, and perhaps even a firm-ware version for the lg drive... let us know!

Comparable doesn't mean compatible. Just because they have similar specs doesn't mean that they'll all do exactly the same thing with every type of disc.

Well I'm new to making backups but i tried the original firmware and then flashed it to the fsoj firmware version on the lite on sohd-169ps and It just keeps trying to read it then starts again with both using dump 2.0 so i guess it doesn't work.

I found a drive that will read the disk but I tried raw dump and it does not recognize the drive. I received the faulty drive message. It probably will not work. But I will post it anyways. Atapi DVD DD 2X16X4X16. When i open the disk it does not show any files. This is the farthest I have made it with non gdr drives.

gunz1,

crossing firmware usually damages the drive
i'd advice against it unless you know its effectively the same model

e.g HP GDR-8162, LG GDR-8162

or GDR-8162 - GDR-8163

But the risk it to great for most people... you'd need to have a big supply of drives and not give a t&$$!

Are you saying you dumped an ISO image using this drive, but when
you wrote the ISO to a DVD - the wii couldn't read it...?

Could be media?
Even your wii might be to warm ;-)

What speed did you write the iso to a DVD?

What media are people using around here...?

-R / + R ? Any ?

Do some work far better than others?

I'm using Maxell

I'm using Verbatim +R. -R works well, too.
Others are using Y/S media (forget the actual brand name).
Sony reportedly works well.
Most people gripe about Maxell. Heh.

All I did was put SMG into the drive and it didn't lock up. I could check the properties and open the disk. There were no files or file names showing for the drive, but it did read it. Then i tried to rawdump and it gave me a faulty drive error.

I'm using Ridata printable (come in 50s for £7) in a red wrapping. Burn them at 1X just to make sure. Also tried Imation +RW 4x works very well at X2 burn speed.
What hasn't worked and has cost me £15 so far:
Mirror +R
Datawrite Titanium -R
Memorex +R
Philips -R
Packard Bell +RW

If we have another thread for this - apologies but I can repost there is the moderator wants?

Cheers

I can confirm that HP GDR-8164B works with 0B10 AND 0B07 firmware. I thought that the 0B07 firmware was faulty but it turned out to be some crud stuck in the drive. Funny though it seems that the 07 firmware is faster in RAWDUMP than the 10.

There's a link in the first post right after the 8161B info... takes you to LG's website. And for4 the record... not all 8161B's work, either... at least, not until you flash to the v102 firmware. (Got a few drives, here, that I had to do that to)

I Tried it on my fathers computer -> Dell(don't know the typenr) but is aproximatly 5 years old.

I used FriiDump to dump the image, i didn't tested Rawdump because it reads the modelnumber and if it isn't supported it wouldn't even trie. Using friidump it was done in 97 min.

I used the following drive:

IDE\CDROM_NEC_DVD+RW_ND-1100A____________________10GE____\5&33D6CA78&0&0.0.0

mode UDMA

and this is the result I got:

F:\cd image\wii\friidump-0.3.0-Win32>friidump -d G: -a
