Not quite as simple as that, probably best to read from the begining and also this post

When posting, please include the complete details as described here.

Include Brand, Model as listed in Rawdump, Firmware version, Rip speed for a complete disc and Drive Mode tested.

We already know the 8162B works, the questions remaining are which exact brands/models and firmwares work better and what are the different performances of each.

So far it appears there is a trend of the older drives and older firmwares ripping faster.

Thanks.

I have not heard of that firmware yet, but I suspect the drive probably works and it's a problem with your system or install of the drive. Try putting the drive on a cable by itself or doing the dump in Safe Mode. See if that makes any difference, if so, you probably just don't have it setup right.

Please post all the details when you get them.

I had the same experience, the lower model numbers and sometimes lower firmwares are faster. I noticed the rip speed on my 8162B was quite a bit faster than yours. What DMA mode were you using?

What did the 8082N come from?

I know Dell, IBM, Toshiba have used the drive...

Everyone be careful of Toshiba drives, same model, but has inverse cable selection...

This means you've got to get your soldering iron out... to get it to run as a master.

Found this http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?p=103132#103132
about another drive...

It might indicate why you have to use PIO mode.

Its not a big soldering job but an extra risk along with firmware not working, etc...

I'll post the firmware rev, if i get the drive working ;-)

I carn't recall if you have to select master or csel to use a DVD-ROM in an external enclosure...
Both the ones I tested were out of IBM Thinkpads. However, I tested them in two different HP Pavillion laptops. I just had to remove the connectors on the back and mounting rails and then they plugged right in.

I don't think the PIO mode affects rip speed much since the rips are so slow anyway. Even in PIO mode it still ripped faster than my 8163B and 8164B in UDMA 2 and UDMA 3 modes.

I have also been able to rip with the drives set up as either master or slave, even when there is only one drive, but that may be motherboard/BIOS dependant more than anything else.

I've updated the OP and drive list.

robgrm, could you please confirm that the info on the SDGecko backup method in the OP is correct. I just copied the info from your post, but don't have an SDGecko yet myself.

Thanks for the great info though!

Yes, the information is correct. I would more closely estimate the time for a backup using this method is about 1.5 hours. I have so far had 100% backing up WII games using this method, although GameCube games are another matter. While the text file implies it will work with GC backups as well, I tried a few times, and none would play.

However, for WII backups, this is an excellent method and does not require finding a DVD drive.

I'm assuming you could use this WiiKey SD Adapter for $5.33 Free shipping instead of a Gecko brand?

Here are 8162B DVD-ROM drives for $29 shipped. Shows 36 in stock. Model is listed as CRD, but that is an obvious typo of GRD - there is no such thing as a CRD-8162B and the description says "DVD-ROM."

It is not unusual for times to vary, but just make sure that the ISO file is 4,699,979,776 bytes. If it is, it SHOULD work. If not, you have a bad dump and need to do it again. If it is a bad dump, ensure that you are running as little applications on your computer as possible when performing the dump and try again.

The chances are is that its down to some piece of hardware on your computer or something. Even if it is very slow, it seems not to be affecting the backup, so I guess that you DVD drive seems fine.

The only other thing I can think of is does it have the latest driver update?

I don't think they really have any drivers out for this (but I'm not sure).

As for vista, there are numerous complaints about its compatibility. Here is a thread with the same problem.

Guys

I am hoping for some help as I am new to this .am I reading this right the only drives that work are LG because of the ramdump program

1.Has anyone tested another brand or would it be a waste of time ?

2. How old are these drives..when were they manufactured ?

3. Has LG made drives for Memorex or lite-on

Thanks

There is no point trying others as these are the only models that can use rawdump (because of the way it reads the disc)

These drives are pretty old (i think) and they may have been discontinued, or at a very slow production rate. They shouldn't be too hard to find on ebay or something.

As for 3, I don't know

I dont think this is a typo, if you search for the GDR-8162B it is there also:
https://www.cheeverind.com/parts/GDR-8162B.aspx
There is a $11.60 difference in the price, as the "GDR"-8162B sells for 40.60, I'm not sure about shipping, it didnt say it was free, so it must be calculated upon checkout.
I have sent an email to the contact person at that website asking if he knows what the difference is between the two part numbers, I will post his response when I get it.

Oops, now he will probably increase the price of both of them to $40.

Just found this for the GDR-8082N

http://support.us.dell.com/support/downl...0&fileid=127135

It updates the firmware to support DL disk's...

I've not tried it... just though i'd post it, if someone else was considering it...

Ok, update about this:
I received an Email from Brendan Cheevers stating that the CRD was a typo, and thats all he said. So, I decided to search both GDR and CRD and see what the difference was besides the price, and I found that the CRD is $29 and it states the manufacturer is IBM. The GDR-8162 is $40.60 and states the Manufacturer is DELL. I went ahead and placed an order for the typo "CRD"8162 by IBM for $29 and found that ground shipping is FREE, so I will find out if this is a working unit for rawdump or not, if so, then thats a GREAT deal for $29 shipped, compared to the 50 + on ebay for these things.
I should have it in a few days, and will be able to test it and I will post my results then.
