Heres the info that Nero has onthis. It applies to both CDs and DVDs:

Power calibration area
Each CD-R and CD-RW at the beginning has got a so-called Power calibration area, in which the CD Writer can determine the laser power necessary to burn. Unfortunately this does not mean that every CD Writer can write on every CD-R. For most CD Writer there are makes of CD-Rs which cause problems. Often an update of the firmware can help. But then again a firmware update can make it impossible to write on some makes of CD-R.

A CD-R or CD-RW can be tested up to 99 times. This means that a CD-RW can not be written on more than 99 times. When deleting a CD-RW the Power calibration area also deleted so that a CD-RW can be written on up to approx. 1000 times. The UDF standard says that files which are changed can be written on a different place. This means tha if a file is changed often, that the CD-RW is not written on again and again in the same place but the whole CD is written on evenly (or as a general rule the resepective free area on the CD). It is possible that not all Packet Writing Programs use this method.

The first thing I would do is try some different media. Try some Ritek instead of that CMC stuff. It could even be a problem with your burner's laser.

Thanks a lot but I have no idea what that means!
So it says to try another program. Are there other free programs like DVD Shrink to burn dvd's? If so, what are they and where can I find them?

You can use Shrink with Nero or DVD Decrypter to burn. Go over to the software section of this forum to find them.

Dayna, your problem is actually related to the burning-with-Nero part of the process, so you can still use DVD Shrink to do the DVD processing/compressing.

You have a few options:

- try another media.
- burn at a lower speed.
- select for DVD Shrink to output as an ISO image ("Backup! >> Select Target >> ISO image), and burn it with DVD Decrypter (free).
- check for a newer firmware for your burner.

I'm very nervous now because I finally found a thread on this forum relating to my problem. Both people tried everything that everyone has suggested so far and they both ended up having to buy a new burner. Why is it that this problem just came from nowhere? Bascially what I think happened is that I install Windows Update Service Pack 2 and it fucked everything up! I uninstalled it but the burner problem won't go back to normal. Do you know of anyone who's had this problem and actually fixed it?

There has been quite a few reports of SP2 messing-up a perfectly good system. :/

I cannot point you to any specific thread or solution I'm affraid.

You could try updating your drive firmware, but there's not guarantee this will fix your issue.

Well I have been having a simular issue later. I think I have to say that the issue is with Nero and only Nero. The problem only recently had shown up after I redid my computer and yes my old system also had sp2 on for XP. I can burn successfuklly with the software that came with my hp420i. I can also burn successfully with Roxio version 6. So now I use DVD Shrink and make an ISO. After that I use Roxio to extract the image to my dvd +R. And then I have a backup copy of what my iso was.
Hope this helps. This was the error I was researching when I found this site hoping to get enlightened as to why my burner has all of a sudden stop burning with Nero. Oh version is 6.3.1.25
You know what they say if one vendors software doesn't work...then I am sure I can adjust for another choice.
