If you have Argon and followed the steps I have explained, it should work.

I disagree. GQ may have problems with spotty quality but SSBB backed up properly to a GQ DL -R blank perfectly. Subsequent backups were good as well. I had a $3.00 Fuji DL that is now a coaster.

Depends on the burner as well actually. I've got some cheap Aones and one of my burners won't even burn them but they burn fine in another.

Hi there,
I recently did a backup of SSBB, it is the right size (8,511,160,320 bytes), but when I try it on the wii, I get an error. The game cannot be read.

Any solutions here?

Thanks in advance

alright, my backup is working perfectly, no problems. Used memorex dvd+r dl 8X. burned at 2.4. i have ntsc wii with 3.2U firmware and wiikey 1.9s. it is all about the disks u use i guess, as i had no luck with the crappy GQ from frys. even though the wii recognized the disk and i was able to start it, it would still freeze up after loading on the video parts. thanks to everyone who contributed and helped me out the last couple of days and this thread in general! happy playing.

I used to use some cheap Dynex DVD+R media (from Best Buy) for my Wii backups. They worked perfectly. Then one day, a made a few new backups and they weren't working. Little did I notice that the actual design on the disc changed (but not the packaging label.) I took one of the working and one of the "broken" Dynex discs to my PC and checked it with DVD Identifier and low and behold, they were different discs! Definitely a buyer beware case, as the Wii (and even 360) are picky about what blank media you use.

Guide for PAL Wii (Wiikey 1.9g), NTSC SSBB & PAL DATEL Freeloader

1. Burn DATEL Freeloader with IMGBURN on a 4.7 GB DVD-R (i used Verbatim)
2. Burn the NTSC version of SSBB with IMGBURN on a Dual Layer DVD (also Verbatim)
3. Download the latest Firmware (3.2E) via Wireless Internet Connection
4. Insert the DATEL Freeloader
5. The screen will show strange squiggly lines coming from the right side of the screen moving towards the left and back again
6. Squiggly lines will reappear again
7. Wii should show a Gamecube Disc
8. Repeat steps 4-7 one more time
9. IMPORTANT: Change your Wii's display settings to 60HZ (480i)
10. Insert SSBB
11. It should ask you to update, DO IT, it won't add extra channels or harm your Wii at all.
12. Enjoy the game!

NOTE: This is for the first time you play. If you want to play PAL games, change your settings back to 50HZ (576i).

To play SSBB after the initial setup, simply insert the DATEL Freeloader, wait for the squiggly lines do to their thing, and insert SSBB after changing the display to 50HZ.

After about 60 pages of reading, I'm having trouble finding a straight answer on the "Error #001: Unauthorized Device Detected" black screen. SSBB loads on the channel screen and allows me to press Start, then I receive the error after the disc drive fires up.

Launch day NTSC Wii with Wiikey running 1.9s
Wiizard version of SSBB NTSC burned at 2.4x to Verbatim DVD+DL (no layer break)
Wii updated to 3.2U

I read about hex editing a file and using Trucha Signer (which I have setup with key.bin) but the directions are vague on how to extract the .dol file, etc. I saw someone else open an Error #001 thread, but the admins closed it promptly because it was asking about SSBB, even though Mario Kart Wii and MLB 2K8 appear to have similiar issues.

I was able to run the PAL Mario Kart Wii backup using BrickBlocker and RegionFrii. I never received the Error 001 on any other game so far.

As you can see, I used Verbatim DVD+DL, which appears to have worked for some. The trend of thought seems to be using different media and/or burning speed, but I'm at a loss here. Any advice?

The problem with this error is it isn't consistent - in other words there is actually nothing to nail it down to a specific solution. It's a media/burner/software/layer break issue coupled with the fact that even similar drives in Wiis have different tolerances when it comes to reading media. In your case if you are fully updated then in theory the unpatched backup should work either with layer break manually set or, if not like that, with it left untouched. If neither works then it has to be the disk regardless of whether others get that media to work. The burner I think is a very underestimated factor. I've recently switched to using a different one. When I tried to burn this game on cheap Aones on my usual burner it wouldn't even touch the disk. So I tried Verbatim and that worked. However the Aones worked just as well in another burner and in fact I noticed minor issues with one or two other games were solved by swapping the burner. It doesn't matter how great everything else has been up till now either. Each game can give different levels of success.

Just to illustrate my point - read this...

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/581996

It's not even giving that error everytime with the same disk - sometimes it works and sometimes it gives .001. Firmware updates might sometimes increase stability but burners have firmware updates too, and some are also close to being past their sell by date.

Oh and as you would expect dual layer is gonna throw this error up more than single layer because it's not as nailed down technically, being relatively new in comparison.

mahteen if you have a USA NTSC Wii and are trying to run the USA NTSC SSBB then brick blocker does nothing to help you. Read the reply I gave SProdigy.

Media, Speed, Burner, Layer Break. Those are the only options you can play with really unless you want to try a different burner program. Some ppl have gone through many disks before they hit the right combination. Others got a good burn straight away. The biggest variable is the burner unfortunately.

I got an extra copy of SSBB that works perfectly on my Wii modded with Argon with 1.8 firmware. My Wii is a D2C. I don't know if it'll work with other D2C chips except Argon. If anybody is interested, I'm in OC area.

If mean mean you have an original not a back up copy then post this in afterdawn marketplace. All buying and selling goes there (read the rules and what is allowed first)

But giving away/selling back ups - no - not allowed to be posted anywhere at afterdawn.

I'm sure this has been covered but I've spent about 45 mins looking for it with no luck.

First Off:

NTSC Wii with Wii Firmware 3.2U (latests)
WiiKey with Firmware 1.9s

I need help with the following two problems:

1) I can't play SSBB - backup addition (meaning I'm trying to play a backup)

I tried using a burned copy prior to installing 1.9s (was running 1.9g) Update went fine and I got a little bit of the cut scene before it locked up.

The games comes up in the Disk Channel, shows the splash. I click start, it says Loading... and then...

Green Screen of Death
"The Game Disc could not be read. Please read the Wii Operations Manual for more information"

It was my understanding that 1.9s should allow me to play a SSBB backup.

The ISO is burned to a very high quality DL (Memorex) disk using NERO.

Is all of this caused by my crappy DL burner?

2) My 1.9s Config disk isn't working. It doesn't show up in the disk channel. I've had the problem before with 1.9g and I had to use GCOS version of the disk to get it work.

I tried using my 1.9g GCOS disk to turn Region Overide ON, the 1.9s disk still doesn't work.

I'm hoping somebody much smarter and better at this can tell me the answers to these questions.

Thank You in advance!

PS I'm sure this is the wrong spot, I'm new to the forum. I will try and do better but please just hook me up with the answer.

PPS - Where does wiikey.cn keep going? Just curious.

more then likely is caused by your very high crappy quality DL (Memorex) disk, try verb or ty disks.

Tried a burn with 2 fuji dl dvd+r 2.4x disks i got. they're made in taiwan.

First one @ 2x without layer break failed.
Second one @ 2x with layer break failed as well.

Any ideas? My previous back ups with other games work?

Confirmation of correct iso, 7.92 GB, 8,511, 160,320 bytes right?
its the wiizard one.

Im planning on buying a copy of pirated ssbb maybe.. cant afford to get the right media =S

I use verbatim DVD+R DL
I've burnt 3 copies of SSBB. All of them suffer from the green screen when first loading the game. VERY annoying. ALso used imageburn with and without layer breaks. Pioneer 112D burner.

There is a deeper issue here with problems with this game it seems.

I have the same burner as you, the Pioneer 112D. I also used Verbatim DVD+R DL media. Maybe you should try a few other types of media.

Working (finally) burn was done on:
-Verbatim 8x DVD+DL disc
-Burned at 4x with imgburn, using layer break
-very early release (yay newsgroups!)
-error 001 patched

Previous NON-Working copies were burned on Fujifilm DVD+DL 2.4x discs (they are terrible, but all i could get my hands on at the time), I thought it may be my wii, so i adjusted my laser down to just under 500ohms... wishing i hadnt done that now, and i recommend that before you do anything like that, try some different media!

I have a USA Wii, fully updated, and a WiiKey with 1.9S update

2 issues that have both been discussed in this thread

1. The backup... What media, how it is burned, the burner

2. The original... How well your Wii reads Dual Layer - Nintendo claim a small proportion Wiis aren't reading DL properly and even offering a free lens cleaning fix. Assuming this is true then you can expect it's true for backups as well and on top of that you can assume that it's possible it will read the original but may be very fussy over some backups.

I download a DVD5 version of SSBB Rip from P2P site and burnt it to a DVD-R (single layer) When I inserted the SSBB dvd, wii did recognize the disc on the channel and I could open it. When I clicked on "Start" the whole screen turned black and freeze. I have to unplug the power to reset. Obviously, the media is OK but the game will freeze the Wii. I read many pages of ssbb thread and someone said that I need to change the Wii Video setting to 50Hz. Is that right? and is that the only way to fix the issue?

I have a Wiikey instlled on a Wii with 3.2U and D2B. The WiiKey has been updated to v1.9s. All backup games are OK with v1.9s now but not SSBB.

Thanks.
