This is gonna be a long one, so I hope your sitting comfortably. (make a cuppa first, this could take a while)
First, my set-up
Athlon 2200+
512Mb Ram
internet connection 3Mbit down 256k up
Motorola SB4200 cable modem
Linksys BEFSR41 Gateway / Router
Zone Alarm Pro 4.5.538.001 (version 5 had MAJOR issues)
Norton AV 2003
Azureus 2.2.0.0
SafePeer 2.3
Java JRE2 1.5.0.0
Gateway configured to allow traffic to my pc 192.168.1.100 on the following ports:
6881 - 6889 (improves upload speed and therefore seeding ratio, also using safepeer for obvious reasons)
6969 (tracker)
41200 (incoming tcp listen port changed to avoid throttling, also configured in azureus, works like a charm !)
Both TCP and UDP are allowed.
Seeding only seems to works fine. Azureus gives me full control over the upload speed so as not to choke my own bandwidth (I can still surf / check email at the same time. Had problems with this before Azureus 2.2.0.0 not sure why. Spoke to Azureus about it and they said to wait for this release, and here we are)
Using task manager I monitor the CPU usage. It shows average 20% (ish)
Downloading has been fantastic (for the UK) running at 2.5Mbit/sec
But, since installing 2.2.0.0
(clean install before anyone says anything, I did not use the built in update tool as it's flawed, causes multiple instances of azureus to run and apparently misses out some core file updates)
Using task manager I monitor the CPU usage, OMG !!
I watch in horror as the CPU usage, including kernel slowly creep up to 85%+ and stay there. Then it seems that the CPU is so busy chasing it's tail that both downloads and uploads stop running at all. The application just sits there chewing away at my CPU and refuses to do it's job!!
I search the net for help and check that:
I have the latest azureus (from clean install)
I have the latest Java JRE
My router is configured properly (as transfer speeds are not the issue here I think we can rule this out)
logging in azureus is disabled.
azureus console is closed (very cpu hungry)
bandwidth parameters are within reasonable limits, and adhered to.
Non of which makes any difference.
I try to use task manager to close javaw.exe (the offender) and it takes a VERY long time. After task manager finally gets it closed, my system runs like a tortoise on ketamine, my blood pressure increases, the cat gets yelled at and ultimatley I have to reboot.
Dont get me wrong, I love my cat, and azureus is the most flexable client out there (that I am aware of) but the whole thing is driving me nuts !!!
So, I'm begging you, for the sake of my sanity, and my cat. Please help!!
UPDATE...................
Azureus is officially sacked as of right now!
Big thanks go to the folks on #ad_buddies for helping me find an alternative so quickly.
TRHR, CoZZa, herbsman, agent-k etc........
(My cat thanks you too)
G3 from h**p://g3torrent.sourceforge.net/
after a bit of playing to get used to the new client I am pleased to announce IT ROCKS. check it out.
Taz
Further update.........
As this client does not seem to have a download limit function, and my connection is shared, I was using to much of the bandwidth available. If you come across this problem yourself I can highly recommend NetLimiter
