freezes at 4% encoding using dvd shrink

I have a dell inspiron laptop. with 600 mhgz cpu " pent. 3", 192 mb of ram, external western digital 160 gb of hard drive, and Sony dual layer dvd writer. both external hard drive and DVD writer are usb 2.0 and fire wire compatible. since my laptop only had a usb 1.1, I upgraded with an Adaptec usb 2.0/firewire card. after tiring both usb 2.0 and fire wire ports with my peripheral, DVD shrink stalls at 4 % encoding or approx. 127-128 mb buffered. it wont budge beyond 4% using this usb 2.0/firewire card, but I want to use this card since it should be speeding up my backups over usb 1.1. would anyone know what the problem may be? I have tried using both fire wire and usb 2.0 and both stop at the same place ( 4% encoding). thank you for your help.
