i just installed a dms4lite in my new pstwo, i just flashed it with the toxic bios and it works great, boots dvd-r etc. i was in a hurry (stupid i know) so i didn't do the laser fix trick of installing the 8 x 1n4148 diodes, considering the ps2 works should i bother?, i have heard mixed results about doing this, some people say this will stop the laser from burning out some people say it caused their laser to burn out.

There is no real fix out there, except to program a PIC chip to reset the console when things get warm.

a guy called vanbrunen looked into this

DO NOT USE A DIODE FIX!!! PERIOD!

they limit current to the laser and the disk motor, the laser still gets enough current at times for it to fry

all that a diode fix does is make the disk spin slower, so the laser my try harder and get hot and fry.

my advice is if anything freezes on your PSTwo RUN AND UNPLUG IT!, you may have 3 seconds to do this, so unlucky

also dont ever leave it in standby, if you have a mecacon crash, you are screwed, with these precausions, you might be fine, also dont play for more than about 2 hours before unplugging pstwo.

lucky it isn't a matrix infinity, these are pretty bad on lasers, dms4's are one of the best, good luck

Actually my friend.. there is one solution to the laser fix.. it is the muppetchip ( a mod chip for the V12 pstwo). Although i dont know if it REALLY REALLY works but on the site it says 100% laser burn free!, and this guy i know who tests them says they have worked fine!. Site= http://www.divineo.cn/cgi-bin/div-cn/ps2-muppet.html

If you have any comments about this PLEASE let me know thanks !!!

Alright for ease of explaining, Ill do this in stars (*)

Chance of brand new ps2 laser burning *

Chance of chipped ps2 with dms4 laser burning ***

Chance of MAtrix infinity burning laser ****

I am pretty sure these are correct COMPARATIVELY, please correct me if I am wrong.

I think the muppet chip, likewise with the magic 5kx chip(google it), doesn't do anything more bad for the laser, but I dont think it is a long term fix either.

I never heard any one saying the laser burning of unmodded psTwo's.
I think Neo-Fix Xii with Summone fix should be okay.

I have seen in DMS forums, people saying about overheating ps2, this problem looks only with the DMS chip. Any one know the reason for this problem ?

Yes, the problem starts with the mechanical cd motor drive (mecacon I think) chip crashing, so the disc isn't spinning and then the laser cant read it so it tries harder, draws more current, and bakes itself, go with the summ0nes fix.

One thing that is missing in the ps2 v9-v12 units is the "syscon chip" which is a processor for power management; this integrated circuit is missing in all of the new units (v9-v12). you could still end up with unwanted voltage swing and coil damage or laser burn.

Doide helps By limiting the input signal to the power driver. This ensures that the voltage swing on the coils does not exceed a maximum value. but there is a deeper problem that is not being identified by this fix and it does slow your read speed somewhat. I would recommend the fix if you have a v12 unit with or without a modchip just to be safer.

My PS2 laser burned out after 5 days after doing this. My PS2 is slimline PS2. I don't know if this process works on Original Ps2 or not?

No, it does not work in any other playstation model except for the slimline (the diode is designed for the v11 or v12). for those of you who have a v9 or v10, you then have the option of adding the refined "LA6508".

the diode fix does not resolve the problem with the laser, you need to make two fixes, one is called matric pic fix and the other the summon fix

Ok, well the diode fix is basicly a matrix PIC fix but on a PCB board ;-)

There is a deeper problem with the slim ps2; here are some independent fixes that actually repair the ps2's mainboard.

Matric pic fix and Summone
fix, both of which don't affect laser performance are the best fixes in the market right now for slim ps2

Diode fix will decrease laser performance and on top of
that, it doesn't work to prevent laser burnout

Laser
burnout is caused by a Mechon crash

If you want more info go to the dms3 forum site

dude there is no such thing as a Matric pic fix it is called the matrix pic fix; and a pic is a small microchip, the origional ps1 modchip was on a pic. you can make your own matrix pic fix if you go to an electronics store and buy a pic for about 1-2$ then download the matrix HEX files and load the code to the pic.

Also its not a Mechon crash its called a Mechacon crash, and that is when the mechacon fails to initialize during the power on; this is due to the cd/dvd patching.

If you really want to do a complete repair on your ps2 slim. go with the vandrunen fix.

http://ripper3.com/V12_protect_rev1.pdf

You can download the matrix pic fix HEX files here, its in the middle on the page. You can also find them at eurasia.

These are all proposed solutions to the design flaws of the ps2 none are approved by SCEA for the slim units.

From my personal experience the diode has protected the units that I have inserted modchips into compared to the ones I have not. Don't get the origional diode (the one without the intergrated pic & code), eather get the Neo-Fix XII, DIODE PCB Laser Protect w/ PIC, &/or Ps2 Fix:

http://www.playstationmodchip.com/customer/product.php?productid=1303&cat=191&page=3

even with the origional diode you can alway get a pic and load some code or buy one from eurasia.

go here, read it all, sorry if someone has mentioned it, for a simple fix, go with summ0nes, for a proper foolproof fix, go with vandrunen, dont bother with anything else:

I am only speaking from my own experience!!!!read my posts!!!

Plus I never said the SummOnes proposal wasn?t a good fix either I just can?t speak on its behalf since I haven?t used that fix in my ps2 installations (I wouldnt comment on something that I havent tried and only read about through a 2nd hand prospective); all I know is I haven?t had any problems yet using the method I have been.

yeah yeah, I mean to anyone else reading this. You would decrease the chances if you had a PIC in there to reset if a mechacon crash occured, but the diodes are crap, what can be done is replace certain diodes on the board with the right resistors to have it almost perfect. Oh and its fine if the fixes you are using are working for you, I just pointed out that thread in the DMS site, and I get confused a bit when I write different stuff in the DMS forums, PS forums, atomic forums, and these so sorry if I mention anything twice. :-)

another piece of advice, would be to never keep the pstwo in standby when not in use; you should always unplug the unit (since sony decided to remove the dead switch), I recommend plugging it in next to a surge protector and switch on/off that when the unit is not in use to turn the power completely off (that's the most practical way of going about cutting the pwr at this point).

Yeah, you could easily add a switch onto the primary side of the transformer, but then yeah, you might as well turn it off at the wall.
