Fastest DVD-ROM at ripping?
I searched but did not find an answer.
Which DVD-ROM drive rips DVDs the fastest?
I know the speed at which is rips is usually slower than the rated speed - i.e a 16X DVD is much slower at ripping movies.
So, which one will rip a move to hard disk the fastest? Also what DVD recordable drives(any decent format) rip fast?
Also if you have any links or resources please let me know.
Thanks,
John M
P.S. - is there a good FAQ on DVD recording stuff?

After scouring usenet and other resources I have yet to find any good answers.
I know the new Pioneer 4X DVD recorder only rips movies around 1.8X or so. I'm not too happy with that!
I'd like to find a DVD reader(DVD-ROM) drive that does it a bit faster. I'd like to archive my movie collection to hard disk quickly and then back them up and encode them to DivX(in a batch)..
Having 1.8X read is poor imo.
Anyone know of a drive that will read/rip movies FAST?
Thanks
John M

Thanks, do you have any idea at what speed it rips?
I am curious though, surely there are DVD-ROM (readers) drives that rip at 4X-6X or even higher?!!?
Thanks

I have a SONY DVD-ROM that rips fast it's DDU1611. It sometimes reaches 7.3x but only for a moment. The average speed is about 3x. If you don't have DMA enabled for your DVD-ROM do so. It really speeds up the riping proccess. You can do that by right clicking on my computer-properties-device manager-select your DVD-ROM and click on properties and then in one of the tabs you will find the DMA option.

Did you mean READ speeds? I am asking about read speeds - how fast can a DVD-ROM or RW READ a movie or RIP a movie to hard disk?
Thx for the tip on the Toshiba.

Well sorry but the read speed of a DVD-ROM refers to reading raw data like a CD-ROM.
Ripping a movie is not reading the raw data bc the raw data is useless until it is decrypted - AFAIK the movie files have to be ripped.
This is analogous to how most 56X CD-ROMs cannot do digital audio extraction(DAE) of an Audio CD at 56X - the newest ones do it anywhere from 10x-30X or so.. In the old days getting an 8X DAE was rare..
Now one thing I am not sure of is if the rip speed is dependent on your CPU, but I don't think this is the case..

You are definately right, I was just generalizing and the read speeds are dependent on alot of things such as virtual memory, ram, cpu etc.

My DVD Player reads at 16x and my speeds are always at like 7.0-9.0(<~~most of the time 9.0). So I don't know why yours doesnt go that fast.

I have a Pioneer 106S. Using SmartRipper, I usually average around 5X ripping speeds, with ranges anywhere from 3X to 8X. It's a very good DVD drive and very nice looking with slot load (trayless).

I think it also depends on the disk you are ripping too (single or dual layer).
My pioneer A104 single layer rip 5 to 7X.
Dual layer 2x max.

I have a liteon LTD163D and I was ripping at speeds of about 7 or 8. Something has happened though and I now max it at 2x.
Anyone have any ideas why this is so. Up until now I have been really happy with my ripping.

Best DVD drives i've tested for ripping were Pioneer / Lite-On and AOpen, but you also gotta make sure you have a good ASPI Layer installed (4.60 Build 1021) also latest IDE drivers installed and DMA/Sync enabled on your DVD drive, and lastly, make sure your DVD is NOT connected to your HDD, it has to be Master on the secondary IDE channel.
