I am not sure how to check if my DMA is enabled, have had a look everywhere I know but have hit a standstill. I have good aspi's and latest ide drivers.

Which Windows do you have ? on 2000/XP it should be enabled by default, on 98/Me you need to go to Device Manager to enable it.

I have xp, so i guess it should be enable by default, as I could not locate where to check. I have also checked my version of my aspi, and my ide drivers, all are good, so I cannot come up with a reason why my speed dropped in just the last two weeks. Basically from one run to the next run

I Didn't notice if you mentioned it, but which DVD drive do you have ? I know for example Toshiba/Sony are very bad for ripping.

That's actually a good drive, have you tried checking a firmware upgrade for it ?

Circuit City has the Star Logic 16x DVD-ROM Drive Brand/Model: SLC 11001057 that rips very fast. I get 12 to 16X rips every time with this drive. The only thing it won't do is read DVD's made from my Pioneer 105! This could be the media.. Maxell DVD-R, 2X or something else. Anyway, the drive costs 80 bucks and is the fastest drive for ripping I've tested.

right click "my computer"
select properties
select hardware tab
click device manager
look for your ata/atapi controllers
you should see you primary and secondary ide channels
right click the channel your dvd is attached to and select properties
choose the advanced settings tab
There you will see device 0 and device 1
0= master 1= slave
enable dma there

The above instructions for DMA apply to XP and Windows 2000, in Win 98 you have to do the same except choose the CD Drive itself and change the settings.
Also I noticed on intel 810 based systems there is no option to change this anywhere, but the Intel Application Accelerator from Intel.com after intalled shows the drive is running in DMA. I don't knwo if this applies to other newer Intel chipsets..

I have checked my dma setting and it tells me that the channel is set to PIO only. I have tried to enable DMA but it will not give me the option.
Any ideas?

FYI, I am the original poster and finally got a drive, the Lite On LTD-166S aka LTD-165..
It is a nice drive. Yeah it is noisy when spiing up and ripping, but fine during movie playback.
As far as ripping goes, I ripped a single layer 4.3GB movie in under 7 minutes, which I think is around 8X. I did this using smartripper with NO ASPI. I will load the latest ASPI later and get back to you..
Ok I loaded latest ASPI and Smartripper recognized the ASPI but still didn't load it. I am not too keen on this ASPI thing.
In any case, I also used DVD Decryptor in ISO mode read and got a 10X average - max of 14.2X so it was better!
This all was on a KT133A Athlon XP 1500+ 20GB Maxtor D740X HD 256MB SDRAM..

Do NOT use the LATEST ASPI!! only this specific version: 4.60 Build 1021, you can find it for both 9x and 2000/XP!
The Latest version is VERY buggy and causes ALOT of problems!

Well, please elaborate. what bugs & what problems? The adaptec site says not to load it on Win2k(which I use) but I did find some info reporting that it is ok.. I don't use CD Creator so no worries there..
Additionally, you have to use ForceASPI with this build - what a pain. The newer ones don't require this.. Of course, if I go ahead and install 4.60.. and I get better results then I won't complain..

Some of the reported problems:
1 - "Win32" based burning programs
incapable of detecting or burning
2 - Hurrible Ripping Speeds
3 - Recording Failures
4 - Accessibility Failures
And this is just from the email I got, i'm sure there are more reasons, and there is a better installer then the ForceASPI which quite frankly is rather old by now.

After reading through that page and some of its links it seems the "latest" Adaptec ASPI (4.72) seems to be a solid and stable release.. 4.70 to 4.71 appear to be the buggy ones..
Considering I got a 10X average on a single layer DVD I am content for now..
I may for kicks try 4.60 as well as some of the other 3rd party ASPIs..

Don't say I didn't warn you, when 4.70 came out, everyone thought it was stable, and found out how unstable it is, then 4.71, then 4.71.2, and now you say there is 4.72.
If that was the case, why has Adaptec themselfs released ASPI 4.60 for XP ? they did, because that's the only good version that is also backward compatible.

I read your warning, but the info you gave me somewhat contradicts what you are saying. The info on that page and its links mostly says the newer 4.71.2 ones are ok.
Oh yeah, 4.71.2 is what I meant, not 4.72 ...

I Only gave you the page so you will have somewhere to download a good installer for the 4.60 Build 1021.
As for what you do, it is your choice, but if you lose a few CDR's for no good reasons, don't say I didn't warn you.

Yup, it is a horror, especialy if you live in Israel, and the cost of a CDR here is 5 times more expensive then what you pay per CD ;-)

Well let's see 5 x $0.00 is $0.00 !
When the free deals after rebate are not available we can get decent CD-Rs for about $.20 - $.40 in American dollars..
