I recently started using dvd shrink. The first dvd i burned with it burnt fine, no problems at all. Since then, no dvds have completely burned. I am using a brand new OEM Ben-Q 1620 +/-dvd burner. I have downloaded the current firmware from Ben-Q. I have tried using several high quality dvd brands. Also, I have seen people posting that the DMA should be enabled. How do I do enable this?
If anyone has any advice on how to fix the problem it would be greatly appreciated. The error always occurs during the burning process and looks like this:

control panel -> click system -> hardware tab -> device manager -> click the + for IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers -> right click Secondary IDE Channel, then properties -> advanced tab.

Transfer mode should be dma if available. Reboot and re-check.

Thanks Flip....I switched to DMA, rebooted and tried another burn. Unfortunately the burn failed again like before. I'm really starting to get frustrated with this thing.

As I mentioned elsewhere,
Quote:
Before looking into the log, a bit of info is needed. Why were you told you needed to change to DMA? Changing to DMA is required if you system was in PIO. Putting the DMA selection in the "Transfer Mode" doesn't make it happen on it's own. When IDE channels is expanded in the device manager, what does it say your "Current Transfer Mode" is ? Recheck it and let us know where it is set.

BTW, you didn't set the speed in Shrink for the burn with Nero and you're running at 12X. For best results, many of us recommend burning DVD video at 4X. Write error possibilities increase at higher speeds.
The reason I brought up the above is due to the fact that just changing the setting in "Transfer Mode" doesn't always change the "Current Transfer Mode". Recheck in Device Manager and tell us what is in "Current Transfer Mode". Is it PIO or DMA?

I noted a SCSI error and that is indicative of a firmware malfunction. It could be anything from a faulty head in the drive to a poor cable connection to the IDE controller. In conjunction with what's been stated, I'd suspect the PC may still be stuck in PIO.

Hello Flip and Brobear, thankyou soo much for your help. Sorry for the multi post...it won't happen again. My current transfer mode is PIO and I have it set to DMA if availible. After being told today to use a slower burn speed, I tried it and made 2 succesful burns. I set it to the slowest setting and it worked. Is there any settings concerning Nero that I should adjust? Such as the burn speed? I adjusted the burn speed today on DVD Shrink, I believe it was 2.4x. What should I do about the PIO - DMA topic? Again...thankyou

Yea, I saw that on your other thread. You need to uninstall your secondary ide channel, reboot ... XP will re-install it.

The last time I ran into this, the user had to uninstall the drives, reboot, and let the PC pick the drives back up. Uninstalling the secondary IDE channel wouldn't do it in that case. Just something to be aware of. So, when you do something to change the PIO/DMA setting, go back in the Device Manager and make sure the desired change occurred.

Setting the burn speed for Nero in Shrink will retain that burn speed. With the DMA set , burning at 4X is a good setting. In Nero the program is set to max as default, when you go to burn, you can set the speed then.

So should I leave it be or unistall the drive and reboot? Should the transfer mode be DMA or PIO or should it toggle back and forth as required? Would unistalling the drive lead to greater performance?

Whether it takes uninstalling the drives or the secondary IDE Channel, you need to do it if you're going to efficiently use your drives. I'd try uninstalling the drives to see if that will allow them to be picked back up in DMA mode. That is with "Transfer Mode" in DMA if available. "Current Transfer Mode" should be DMA and not switching back and forth. Whether it be uninstalling the drives and rebooting to get into DMA or uninstalling the secondary IDE channel to accomplish the same, getting the drives into DMA will improve performance.

brobear...hello again. This morning I unistalled the drives and then rebooted. After doing so, the current transfer mode was still stuck in PIO mode. Then I uninstalled the secondary ide channel and rebooted. The current transfer mode was still stuck in PIO. I had it set to "DMA if availible" during both of these 2 processes. Next I went to the Microsoft page concerning the transfer mode and followed the quick process of allowing DMA mode. After doin so, the current transfer mode was still PIO. What does this mean?

Another question brobear...after changing the burn speed on DVD Shrink last nite and making 2 successful burns; today i can't get the burn speed to stay at my specifications (1.0x). It keeps burning at 2.4x, which is the fastest speed to choose from in the drop down box. Do you know why dvdshrink is not keeping my slow burn setting?

This faster burn speed is causing a burn error like before.
