I'm new to burning dvds for backup. I have the version of RecordNow that came with my Dell. I read through one of ScubaPete's guides and downloaded DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. Everything went fine with DVD Shrink, but when it was time for DVD Decrypter to kick in it said ...medium not present. I initially started with a TDK DVD-R and then I switched to a Sony DVD+R, because I read where it could be the media I'm using, but got the same message. What am I doing wrong?

Whats the make and model #
Are their updated versions of firmware available?
Does device manager see your burner?
Yes, I do have a burner. Here is the make and model# JLMS DVD-ROM XJ-HD166. I am not familiar with firmware. The device manager does recognize the burner.
I thought this was the problem and solution, but I guess not:

I just read your guide above for using Shrink and Decrypter and I have the same problem withe the DVD-R's I'm using not being read by my drive as well and I'm using Verbatim. What am I missing here?
Thanks from another newbie. ;)

Thought I'd share this with the other DVD newbies....
turns out the software is not the problem. Or the hardware. It's the discs I was trying to use with my drive. I have a DVD+RW drive and was trying to use DVD-R discs. Apparently that doesn't work unless you have a dual format (+/-) drive. If you have a + drive you must use +R or +RW discs. If you have a - drive you must use -R or -RW discs.
Found this out due to someone on this forum so joining this group has already paid off. :)
updating your firmware will bring your burner up to date with the latest different media available
you can use Nero INFO TOOL to scan your drive.to see if it will BURN DVD/CD
