A couple of months back a thread was started on the subject of "Illegal DVD Navigation structure" error when trying to re-author or open a DVD recorded on various domestic DVD recorders e.g. Aspire 8091, which is what I have.
My experience with the Aspire 8091 is that only the FIRST title on any DVD can be opened in DVD Shrink or any other DVD player application on my PC. If there are two or more titles on the DVD created on the Aspire 8091, I get the "Illegal DVD navigation structure" error.
A couple of the responses pointed me in the right direction, which was to use DVD Decrypter in IFO mode to rip the DVD. However, it turned out that I was not fully understanding the directions given at the time. However, with time I have been able to figure it out.
For the benefit of the other users experiencing ""Illegal DVD navigation structure" error when opening a DVD, here is how I resolved it:
1) Process the DVD in DVD Decrypter using IFO mode. In the Input box you will see listed all the individual titles which are on the DVD. Select the required title and have DVD Decrypter save the resulting VOB to a folder of your choice. If there are multiple titles required, they will have to be processed one at a time in this manner.
2) Use Ifoedit to create the requisite IFO file(s) by selecting "Create IFO's" and point to the VOB file(s) created in 1) above with DVD Decrypter.
3) After the IFO file(s) have been created in 2)above, DVD Shrink will be able to open or re-author the recordings.
This is the way I have been able to overcome this problem when more than one recording is made on a DVD with my Aspire 8091 recorder. I have not been able to get a satisfactory explanation of this anamoly from the manufacturer, Aspire Digital, despite several attempts. I gather however, that this problem is perhaps inherent on many of the domestic DVD recorders. I do know however, that the Daytek DVD recorder does not have this problem.
I would be interested to know which other DVD recorders do or do not have this problem, as well as some explanation as to what is causing it.
