Starting May 15 (Sunday) Staples has their store branded DVD-R and DVD+R 50 pack for $7.94 (no rebates) - SKU 590792-DVD+R, 590794-DVD-R.

I have heard that store branded media are usually no good. However, this is a great deal so I was wondering if anyone has any idea on who the manufacturer is for these discs. Did anyone buy these recently...please post your experience with these.

Mfg id codes are more difficult on those staple's brand media. A buddy of mine gave me 3 from a 25 pack spindle of +8x a couple days ago, made in india.
They ID'D as MBIPG101r04. Moser Bauer from india. He had horrible results in his nec 1100A,but I managed to burn 2 of them at 2.4x ok. Dvdinfopro will tell me my pie/pif errors when I scan one of them.

I just looked at them this morning, and all of them were made in taiwan. For $8.00, it wouldn't hurt to try out a spindle, but it may be a gamble. I may even pick up a spindle for sh*ts and giggles.Sometimes you can get lucky and maybe get a hold of some ricohjpn's out of the plus ones.

saugmon,

Would the ricohjpn disc spindles say "made in Japan"? Did you happen to pick up a spindle?

Thanks.

All my ricohjpn's are all made in taiwan, but are very good. No problem whatsoever.

I didn't pick up any at staples,a found 25 pack spindles of maxell full hub 8x media, made in japan for $16.00. I am very anxious to try out these hitachi produced, Maxell-003 discs. Later

Heh heh.. I take it you are not a fan of the CMC MAGE01's??
I bought the Phillips so I could have disks to mess around with.,.. try out new firmware, new burning procedures etc etc without having to touch my precious TYs..(Yessss... my preciousssssssssss). I was surprised to see how well they burned. While I cant back that claim up with those fancy, hi-falutin scans like you city folk do ;-), they play in my roomie's set top and his PS/2. And at 8 bucks for 50.. hell, why not?? If the discs turn out to be crap, well it's only 8 bucks..
But I would appreciate your recommendations for cheaper media that would be worth picking up for my NEC 3500.

I purchased some teon +8x a while back from staples,40 pack spindles for about the same price. They had that code. They burned ok,but I burned them at 2.4x and didn't put anything important on them. Meanwhile, the 20 pack spindles of teon +8x they had before that for $5 were coded ricohjpn-r01 and were very good. Just be cautious of them.
Good Luck

hehehe, yes, i am not a big fan of the cmc mags, that is just putting it lightly, i am however a big fan of the KILL CMC MAG fan club tho~ :P

anyways, yeah, for the price paid, it will give you an opportunity to try them out as "test burns," while i would highly recommend you using your TYs for your important stuff, use those cmags appropriately and make the most out of them, they might not be playable a few months from now...get what you can out of them while you can~ :)

mypreciousssssssssssssss hahaha, i like that~

anyways, about cheaper media for you nec...what is your price range and what do you consider cheap? secondly, are you willing to purchase online or just locally for "cheaper media?"

if you don't want to sacrifice quality and don't need 8x speed for your burns, then the 4x dvd-r TYs at supermediastore is a great buy (TYGO1s as in my sig.) i even believe there is a coupon right now bringing them down to like $25 plus shipping~

if you insist on purchasing 8x speed dvd's only, then locally, i just wait for sales at office depot/staples/bestbuy/etc. $19.99/50pk or approx. $0.40/disc for the hundred spindle, make sure you find the ones MADE IN JAPAN on the spindle though. Fuji and Sony 8x dvd+r are genuine YUDENs if you get the MADE IN JAPAN ones~ check my sig. for MID codes~

hope that helps a bit...

They should make DVD burners with sharp teeth if it detects crap media being presented. They could even amend the lightscribe technology to print a bright red warning on discs that are somewhat crap, but still allow their use, and leave the teethmarks on the CMC type media so it can't be used in the first place. That should qualify me to join lol :)

ROFLMAO

Rolling on floor laughing my ass off. Or it could be ROTFLMAO. Rolling on the floor laughing my ass off.

I want to join the club also. I still have nightmares about first starting out trying, I say trying, to burn my first DVD. Memorex media ring a bell. I ended up throwing 30 or so blanks in the trash after trying to make around 15 to 20 work to no avail.

wow, seems like my club is coming along nicely~ yeah, it's difficult when you first start out in the backing up game...go through many trials and tribulations, i know i sure have, thrown at least a hundred discs out the window or am currently using them as coasters on my coffee table.

good luck to you all~ my advice is to stay away from store branded media, it's not worth the headache to get them so inexpensively~ :)

as they always say, you get what you pay for~

No recruiting necessary boys. I was a member of the club before there was one. C Mags rock, not. I used to think they were good for target practice but then realized clay pigeons are a lot cheaper and fly better. Hell cardboard coasters even work better under my frosty mug than C Mags do so I really can't think of anything they are good for. Oh wait, what are those things called you tie togather with string and let the wind blow em around.

karelj,

Tell me I'm seeing things, thats not C Mags in your sig is it. Viper will love you.:)
