First problem is your burner and rom have reverted to PIO mode - try enabling DMA.

=== Scsi-Device-Map ===
DiskPeripheral : WDC WD1600AB-00DYA0 atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On
CdRomPeripheral : OEM CD-ROM F564E atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D atapi Port 1 ID 1 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : AXV CD/DVD-ROM 2.2a xmasscsi Port 2 ID 0 DMA: Off

Second problem appears to be that you have got a bad batch of Memorex (not unusual) and your drives are not recognising them.

DMA

Finally, we need to check your DMA. "Ooohh, no you're not ! Only my husband or my Doctor checks my "D", "M" . . whatever . . ." No, no, it's OK, DMA stands for ""Direct Memory Access" transfer mode OR as we say in the computer field, it's a really, fast way to move stuff.

Many PC's today are using UDMA or Ultra Direct Memory Access transfer mode, or as we like to call it, a really super-duper fast way to move stuff as opposed to the PIO mode. The PIO or Programmed I/O mode, is a technique whereby the system CPU and support hardware directly control the transfer of data between the system and the hard disk since shortly after the beginning of PC's up until the mid-1990's. So we want DMA (fast) more than we want PIO (slow).

Let's check your Drive's transfer mode. It should be DMA-4, not PIO. Windows XP downgrades the Ultra DMA transfer mode after receiving six CRC errors and drops it down to the much slower PIO mode.

To enable DMA mode using the Device Manager
1. Open Device Manager
2. Double-click IDE ATA//ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.
3. Right-click the icon for the channel to which your burner is connected and select Properties. Now click the Advanced Settings tab.
4. In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if available if the current setting says, "PIO Only."
If the drop-down box already says, "DMA if Available" but the current transfer mode is PIO, then the user must "toggle" the settings. That is, change the selection from "DMA if available" to PIO only, and click "OK".Then repeat the steps above to change the selection to "DMA if available".

OPTION:

Right-click the burner and select "Uninstall" and then "OK" to all prompts until the PC reboots. Upon rebooting, the PC should "find" your burner and reinstall it, setting it by default to DMA.
Also check your burner firmware and make sure it is up to date, and try better disks.

Hey there, trying to jump into a discussion that is appropriate to my DVD Shrink CRC problem. I have read many threads but none seem to really address the specific problem. I'm backing up my entire dvd collection, some old, some new. I'm cleaning all w/alcohol, and there are no major scratches. i'm getting crc on about 50% of the attempted burns during the analyizing phase or, if i can get past that, the encoding phase. I try cleaning again, or reauthoring, to no avail. sometimes the error comes at different times. sometimes if i put one aside and try again a couple days later (after burning other dvds) the previously problematic dvd will now burn. or if i watch the movie on my dvd player (regular one, not on my computer), and try after, it will burn. sometimes they dont. the problems are not adhering to any of the threads regarding bad burner or bad discs or scratches. the results are all over the place, and doing any one thing does not fix the problem. i suspect it might be the DMA thing i read about above. it is the one area i do not know about and have not tried. after reading your blurb, i tried to do it but my screen is a bit different (also how do you find out which device your dvd burner is hooked into? Primary, secondary or SiS PCI?). i selected primary and here's what i see:

Device 0:
device type autodetection (grayed out)
transfer mode DMA if available (other drop down option PIO)
current transfer mode ULTRA DMA mode 5 (no drop down, can't change)

Device 1:
device type autodetection (grayed out)
transfer mode DMA if available (other drop down option PIO)
current transfer mode ULTRA DMA mode 2 (no drop down, can't change)

Dont know what ULTRA mode 2 or 5 is. Can you tell me what to do in this instance?

do you think this would solve my erratic problem w/burning?
