So, I'm a frequent movie archiver but not seriously "into it". I'm happy if my coppied disk plays without skipping, most times. (though I must admit that some large disks give me considerable trouble)

Anyway, I usually use DVD Shrink. It's very easy to use, and very quick.
Plop the movie in, adjust a few settings and hit the button. When done I have a decrypted movie on my hard drive suitable for burning at my lesiure.

But, I found a particularly difficult movie. Not sure exactly what it was but for some reason Shrink would not do it.
So I got DVD Decrypter.
Now DVD Decrypter worked great. It solved the problem with the troublesome disk, anyway, but of course, I still had to run the movie through shrink! And DVD Decrypter was slow as hell!!!
So, I hate using DVD Decrypter. (It's awesome software, I just hate the extra work it takes to use it)

My question.
Other than troublesome disks, why does everyone in this forum insist on using DVD Decrypt to rip and Shrink to shrink? Is Shrink that bad at decrypting?
What am I missing?

Shrink does a great job at decrypting, but it won't be updated anymore and hasn't been in over a year. Since then, there have been new encryptions that have come out, making Shrink somewhat obsolete for ripping. This is where Decrypter comes in (you can also set up Shrink to burn automatically with Decrypter when it's done, which I like). Now unfortunately Decrypter won't be updated anymore, so soon that's going to be somewhat obsolete as well. I use it to rip movies, then I use other programs besides Shrink to encode the movie. I also use Decrypter to rip and burn PS2 games, which it does a great job at. Decrypter can also be tweaked to rip scratched up DVDs that other software won't rip.

DVD43 works with Shrink pretty good to rip ArcCoos encryption ie., SONY movies.
At times need to go thru Decrypter/SHrink to shrink files to <4.7 GB to fit non-DL media.
D/L DVD43 make ur ripping easier.

I don't know, maybe it's my movie choices (I don't tend to get newer Hollywood movies) but I've done literally hundreds of movies using shrink only and have only found maybe 3 movies that wouldn't decode.

Those that wouldn't decode had this weird thing where there were unreadable or blank sectors. DVD Shrink would hang on these unreadable sectors and error with "unable to read, CRC" or whatever. DVD Decrypter has a setting that will ignore or skip these bad sectors. I'm guessing that this is some sort of attempt to "protect" the disks, but mainly it's just annoying.

I'll be doing some newer disks in the following weeks and I'll see if I have any problems.

CRC errors are usually the result of damaged/dirty/defective discs. Clean it up as best you can, check out ScubaPete's guide (link in my sig) about Decrypter tweaks, that may do it for you. Good luck.

RE2 came out before DVD Decrypter had been updated, and most of us used a PSL patch just to get decrypter to work,so you could use DVD Shrink.
