Hi Oquillia,
This little freeware is a wonderful tool to identify your media. Just pop the media in your tray after loading dvdinfo, click the disc and, PRESTO!
http://www.cdfreaks.com/software/60
Additionally, buy only quality branded media and save yourself the eventual, ubiquitous letdown.

Kodak Dvd-r 4X
media code : CMC MAG. AF1
Have burnt 4 complete spindles of 100 and never had a single coaster. Tested many and there has never been a single read error( I havent tested them all) At 59.99 for $100 And no problems why would I use these other discs I have....
Ridata G04
Manufacturer ID : [RITEKG04]
Purchased 2 cake boxes of 50 from a website, not sure the name, but I could find it. Good reputation, but they wouldnt offer a refund or replacement based on my problems.
I still havent used up quite all of them but the first 50 produced 11 coasters, and out of the 39 good ones I got I tested all of them for read errors, about half of them have errors, some will not play in my stand alone samsung dvd player, but all play problem free on the PC. All of the Kodak media has played time and time again in the DVD player without a single problem whatsoever. So personally I see no reason why you all (most of you swear by the Ritek media) I have even tried samples of other types of Ritek media and the results were less then impressive. I have in the past used Maxell and Fujifilm media as well, only because I was short and needed a few to get by. No problems encountered with those ones either.

On a related note, although I normally buy my media from either Newegg or Rima, I recently bought a spindle of 50 Ridatas (G04) from Shop4Tech and so far I've had 4 coasters in about the first 1/3 of the spindle. Previously I'd bought DVD cases and paper sleeves and off-brand ink cartridges from them and been very happy, but I don't plan to buy media from them again.
Something else worth mentioning is that just because the media you get has problems doesn't automatically mean it was bad when the distributor or retailer received it. Improper packaging or handling can cause a lot of problems, especially with the discs at the top or bottom of a spindle. In other words, don't assume bad media = fake dye code, especially when the price seems to be normal for the media you're buying.

Media: RiDisc Ritek G04 x4 DVD-R (Purple Top)
Retailer: SVP Communications
Media Code: RITEKG04
Burner: Optorite DD0401
Didn't know what to make of this disk as I have used the disk before without issue. I bought another 100 and the first 4 disks I burnt were coasters which I thought was weird for such a well thought of and usually very reliable disk. I double checked and they were ID'd by Nero, DVDInfoPro and DVD Decrypter as x2 G04 media! I didn't know x2 G04 existed? A Ritek G04 with only a x2 Write Descriptor..... very strange, anyway I thought nothing of it put it down to experience and tried burning at x2, I can live with burning at 2x for 100 discs.... 4 more coasters, now I was really annoyed.... x1, more coasters. A duff batch? I tested (not burnt) all 100 discs and they all ID'd at x2 but they still didn't burn - even at x1! The dye looked flawless as G04's usually are.... To their credit SVP offered me a refund, I've always bought my DVD's from there so instead of that I re-ordered a dearer brand - Datawrite x8 DVD+R Prodisc-R03-03's - which I have used without issue before - excellent disc btw at £9.99 for 25. Anyway, steer clear of these purple tops for now at least until someone who has success says otherwise.

Media: Ritek Tango (DVD Identifier finds them as GO5 at 8x)
Merchant: Scan (uk)
Problem: lots of non-burns (power calibration errors) when prebious Ritek tangos (GO4) had never caused any problem whatever.
Burner: Sony DRU510A with 1.1a firmware (most recent)
Software: DVD Shrink & DVD Decrypter (with Nero 6)

Media: Ritek DVD-R, 4X, Shining Silver Top
Retailer: IOProducts.com
Media Code: RITEKG04
Disk Center Logo: PoiData 4X Super Grade A DVD-R
Burner: Plextor PX-708A Firmware 1.08
It is obvious that these are not Ritek RiData disks at all as I was lead to believe. The first two I burned from the 100 purchased are coasters. Looking at the burned side of the disk under good light, 2 cm dark lines can be seen ware the video skips and freezes. I hope these people will give me my money back.

I have purchased all kinds of dvd+R's (fugi, imation, sony, memorex, ect.)one big waste of money.I always get a successful backup, but its like rolling dice when putting it into the dvd player. sometimes it will play , sometimes with glitches , and sometimes not at all.I've tried many ways to back them up to dvd shrink/nero,dvd express"which sucks"and platinum. But since ive moved away from thes + format disc and went with maxell - r's not a bad disc yet. Does anyone know if it has anything to do with + format?

Well here I am again!50 Burns later,I Discover it's not the Disc's,it's my external Plextor PX 708A. (I guess I owe Mitsubishi an APOLOGY.)Their MCC 02RG20 Disc's are burning fine.
I guess these external housings are not what they are cracked up to be.I've been using ADS 2.0 USB Drive Kits for about 11 Mons now.But just recently I've had trouble with 2 of them. They power up fine, but one of the drives won't reconize that it's a 120 Gig hard-drive,& the other was my writer which was giving me problems.I would have never thought that a writer in an external housing would create bad clusters on a Disc. But they did!I Assume it was caused by low Voltage, and not running the writer properly.I moved the writer into my computer & all is fine.
Any feed-back on this would be APPRECIATED! I like external housings, but not at a $100.00 every 11 Mons..
So anyway the Disc's are fine!!Great prices at supermediastore.com $0.40 ea (Prodisc 4xDVD-R)THIS IS SHIPPING INCLUDED.
Oh yeah MCC 02RG20 on the Prodisc is the same id # as on Verbatim DVD-R

Verbatim MCC03 +R 8x media, made in taiwan
bought at Mediamarkt (germany/swiss)
TS-H552B burner with TS04 then TS05 firmware all at 4x
Nero/CloneDVD/Pinnacle/Blindwrite/Alcohol tried all
Test with CD/DVD speed and KProbe on a SOHD-167T hacked at 16x for DVD+/-R
Results:
- The white DVDs, shipping in boxed 10 packs:
* bad media output with TS04 firmware
* bad data at outer edge abouve 3.9Gb data with the TS05 firmware
- Silver DVDs, with verbatim logo, shipping in round unboxed 10 packs
* TS04 not tried
* TS05: great burn with Kprobe below 5 to 20, good outer edge, CD/DVD speed curve smooth at 16x reading
Conclusion:
Verbatim white media is bad at outer edge giving erronus unreadable data output. This was confirmed on other burners/PCs. Tried 4 packs of 10 DVDs :-(

Does anyone of late know if Ritek G04 have improved there dye for there DVD-R? Since noticed like everyone else there dye went down hill very quickly. I've also noticed the media code change in Prodisc's also. I think some of my prodisc's problems was some of the dye was flawed on all of them that had read errors. It's very frustrating you can get your first copy from DVDshrink and after that read errors on the next copies. I have a total of 7 DVD burners. (2) Toshiba SDR-5112, (2) Liteon LDW-851s, (2) Liteon Sohw-832S, and my newest burner Plextor PX-716A. I just ordered some Hyundai media, Taiyo Yuden, and trying out some more Ritek Super Grade G04. Ritek now says this Super Grade G04 is suppose to be finger print resistant. I just hope they don't have this dye problem like they had in the past. I've been buring with Nero 6.6.0.1 so far it seems very stable.

Media: Memorex 10 pack DVD-r 4.7 GB
Merchant: Bestbuy
Burning movies shows no problem at all. But when it comes to burning games, it doesnt work at all.
Totally sucks butt media. I dont recommend using this at all. So what media should u use? Whatever the first 1 u try that works, stick with it. TO me after trying Ritek Ridata go4, my games run awesome, now i'm sticking with it. But listen now, this media might not work with u.

My .02 about Ritek disks.
I have been using them for a couple years now tih no problems but of late I've been having problems with the G04's. I don't get coasters but my PS2 has trouble reading them and I have to boot it like 10x's to get it to run, and this is every time now. Some games are getting buggy also. Running slow and freezing up, then running OK etc...
I'm not sure what the deal is but they used to have fully branded disks. With the Ridata logo and 4x branded with the lines to write what's ont he disk in that arrow sort of shape (I hope you guys know what I'm tlakign about here). Those disks seem to have fallen off the planet and I can't find them anywhere. Now all that's available is the disks that are branded in the hub. The ones I'm having trouble with are the ones with the total clear hub. The ones that are "frosted", I guess is how to dicribe them work fine. But I can't seem to get hem anymore. The last 2 orders I've placed I've got the clear hubs and they don't burn at 4x. On the label it says 2x/4x data. So if you want to burn a data disk they will burn at 4x, but if you want to burn a DVD video you can only burn up to 2x's. And I puchased them at different stores as well. So I don't think it's the place you buyt hem from I think it's Ritek. I think the G04 is ont he backburner so to speak and they are more focused ont eh G05 and the dual layer disks and mayeb they are going cheap on the 4x disks. I'm going to try the 8x ones to see how they go.
On another note I can't say enough bad things about mertiline. Their customer service is the absolute worst. It takes weeks to get any responce. Then you ahve to wait another week for htem to "look into it" etc... They arbitrarily replace your order with somthing "similar" without consulting you and when the stuff is crap and you wnat your money abck they refuse to pay for the shipping costs etc.. so you have to pay to send crap back to them that you didn't want becasue they ran out and didn't feel it was necesary to ask for your approval to replace an item with something similar. Then another order of mine was lost. Again it took 2 weeks to get a responce. Then it took 3 weeks to "look into it" etc... 2 motnhs ahd passed and I was no clsoer to getting my order than when I palced it. Couldn't get anyone to respond so I cancelled the order and was done with them.

SKY Dvd-R media is terrible. The media reports to be made my OnidTech and is 4X speed.
In my Nu-Tech DDw-081 flashed to write Dv-R I get 4 out of 5 bad burns. Nero reports this media at only 2x speed, even though it says 4x on the media itself.
This was purchased from. YESBUY.net.
YESBUY is a terrible company to deal with as well. They charged me shipping fee, even though theire website clearly states they do not charge shipping.

I have been using SKY amd MMORE media for almost a year. I have had no problems with the media or my I/O Magic DVD burner. Nero does indicate a 2X; but I prefer the slow burn. Ofcourse, the price in Germany, converting Dollar to Euro is getting painful.

Media: FUJIFILM 100 Packs
Merchant: Best Buy
Mfg: RICOHJPN (Ricoh +R 4X), YUDEN (Taiyo Yuden +R 8X)
Drive: Memorex Dual Format
Great Buy. I've used the Ricoh +R media for a couple of years with no coasters due to media quality. Fuji is one of the brands that sell this excellent +R media. I have two containers, one 4X Ricoh and one 8X TY. TY is another excellent manufacturer. These manufacturers also produce media for TDK, Verbatim and other top brands. Good stuff. I got these at 40 cents per disc on sale (including tax and shipping).
This is bad because I can't get more at this price for now.
