Finally tested a different IDE cable (on my own computer)on the TDK burner and then the burner on a different PC. results were the same. No DVD media recognized by the burner. Tried new bank media -TDK 8X DVD+r, Ritek 4X DVD+r, and Ritek 8X DVD-r. Always the same results: device empty or media not present. But even on the other PC, the burner would play audio CD, CDR's, and CD roms.
Looks like its time to send this thing back to TDK or Tigerdirect, whichever one will take it.

That's probably you're best bet at this point.

I just picked up a NEC 3500A. 2.16 Firmware. Any advice for this drive as far as upgrades or computer settings? Appreciate it.

I think its the hardware. with all the work i've done on my computer i know it ain't my PC. If i were you, also try your burner on another pc to test it. if it doesn't work there i say just return it.

I am having the same problem, but my ND-1300A is not just having a problem burning so I don't think it is the media. It won't even recognize a store bought DVD anymore. It is weird, this just started happening one day after working for so long. Will recognized and play CDs fine, but acts as if DVDs don't exist in my drive. My firmware is updated to 1.0c and the aspi driver is up to date as well. Can drives go bad and just play audio cds and not dvds all of a sudden?

Drives don't normally just quit, there's usually a period of time where performance starts to degrade before it gives up the ghost. Have you tied uninstalling the drive through Device Manager? It's simple and may do the trick.
Go to Device Manager >
Expand the tree for DVD/CD ROM Drives >
Find the drive in question, right click it and go to Properties >
Under the Driver tab, select Uninstall then OK.
Now reboot and Windows should detect and reinstall the drive.
If this doesn't help try the same steps as above except expand the tree for IDE ATA/ATA Controllers and uninstall either the Primary or Secondary controller depending on which one the drive in question is attatched to. Nero Info Tool can tell you which chain the drive is on under the Configuration tab.

Hi all, Im having problems burning with my Nero, DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink combo. It worked perfectly for 3 months, and I made over 50 copies flawlessly. However, recently I've been getting errors with Nero. After I rip and encode the DVDs with Decrypter and Shrink, Nero always craps out, giving me either an unspecified target error or internal target failure error with the message that the burn process failed at 2x (2,760 KB/s).
Im not sure what to do. I've removed and reinstalled Nero, Decrypter, and Shrink to no avail. I don't think its a problem with the media, because I had no problems with the Sonic DVD-R 4X before. I think its either a hardware problem, or a software conflict. I recently installed I-tunes and Daemon Tools, but I doubt they would cause problems. I continually use Ad-Aware and Norton Anti-Virus to check for spyware and viruses. Im running XP, and I have a Matshita DVD RAM UJ 820S Multi burner that I use with my Toshiba Labtop(3.2 GHz, 512 MB RAM). Not sure what to do anymore. Any suggestions?

I too just installed a NEC ND-3500A DVD burner (dual layer/dual format). My burning software (Nero6) is not recognizing the drive (calls it an "Image Recorder" or something), but it shows as working properly in my Device Manager.
What exactly is meant by "Aside from ensuring the drive is set to master on it's respective IDE let her rip!" ???
Edit - Ok, I think I found my problem(s):
1. What I thought was Nero 6, is actually v.5.5, which doesn't support DVD burning apparently.
2. Also, I checked the drive I removed to make room for the new DVD burner - it was set to master, so I will check to make sure that the new drive I've installed is set to master as well.
Thanks in advance.

I tried all of that and still nothing. I put it in my other machine and it does the same thing. It only recognizes CD-Rs and store bought audio CDs. It will not recognize DVD-Rs or store bought DVDs. I hat e to think that the drive just stopped working on DVD formats...that just doesn't sound right to me...but what else could it be? I would think a drive would just go...not just stop playing one format.

@ hurley001
1. Nero 5.5 fully supports DVD burning but may not have recognized your model drive since it's relatively new.
2. Don't set both drives to master if thy're on the same cable. The one on the very end of the cable should be set to master and the one in the middle should be set to slave.
@ ruactin
It sure sounds like your drive is dead.
