rroettger,
Thanks for the suggestions. I did try changing the settings to DMA if available. The one device (burner) went back to PIO. I also tried uninstalling both of these devices as well as the IDE controller. Still no go. The drive is new (Optorite DD1205 - mfg in Aug 2004) and I downloaded the latest firmware for it. One question, if I uninstall the device and reboot, do I also now have to reinstall the new firmware for it or is that retained by the system?
I've heard of people having problems due to a driver conflict and a particular make of motherboard.
http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=6645
I've tried most of the things on this thread with the exception of installing new and different drivers for the IDE controllers. I don't now what the make of my motherboard is? Would you recommend trying to do this?

put both drives as master on own cables, post results or rejumper drives to master & slave if on same cable because you can't have both as cs on same cable. put dvdrom??? as master & dvdburner as slave or do as i said in begining part of this post

It was my understanding that you could have two configurations for two devices on the sme IDE cable.
1) both can be CS and they figure out which is the master and which is the slave
2) You set one as the master and the other as the slave.
Am I correct with this logic?

Sorry, wrong again. There are a few burners that support Ultra DMA Mode 4.
Thanks ddp for dropping by.

umgrad76 - I think you're running into the same problem I was a while back. Yes, both devices can be set to CS. However the one on the end of the cable will be considered the master and the one hooked onto the middle of the cable will be considered the slave. If you are using the slave to burn with and your secondary IDE is saying it is in PIO, then this could be your problem. Same goes with the hard drives. If you have two hard drives attached to one IDE cable. And your secondary IDE channel is saying PIO, then this will affect your burn speeds if your are burning from that drive or write speeds if you are writing to that drive. To solve this problem with your burner. Make sure it is the device connected at the end of the cable. My burn speeds went from 1500-1700kbps to 5600-5900kbps. I only write and burn to my primary drive, because my secondary doesn't want to come out of PIO only. Of course always try to enable DMA mode first in Device manager, or do the uninstall method. But if your computer is like mine and still stays in PIO mode. Then you can try the above mentioned procedure.
I'm not sure why my computer won't switch to DMA mode for secondary devices either. But I believe I saw something about Windows XP and their Service packs maybe having something to do with it. I'm still researching it and will post results if I ever get it figured out.

You need the right cable for CS to work.
Quote: Many drives feature an option called Cable Select (CS). With the correct type of IDE ribbon cable, these drives can be auto configured as master or slave. CS works like this: A jumper on each drive is set to the CS option. The cable itself is just like a normal IDE cable except for one difference -- Pin 28 only connects to the master drive connector. When your computer is powered up, the IDE interface sends a signal along the wire for Pin 28. Only the drive attached to the master connector receives the signal. That drive then configures itself as the master drive. Since the other drive received no signal, it defaults to slave mode.

rroettger, I followed your setting for DMA, but in my current transfer mode, it says "Not Applicable"
I pasted both of my primary for you to see. I think the ultra dma one is my harddrive.
Nero disk tool shows my burner with DMA off, but it used to be on.
Help?

Secondary is were my dvd are located. May be different on your PC. But most DVD only support mode 2 and a few mode 4. Mode 5 has to be a hard drive.
Also, I went to HPs' site and they have a bunchs of frimeware updates on thier burner. Check out you model.

Try checking your secondary IDE and see if one shows up as DMA Mode2 or PIO Mode, these will be your optical drives.Post the screenshots of your secondary's.There could be other things causing your slow rips.I had 40 to 50 min times before disabling a program called Restore by Farstone.I now can rip in 10-15 min.Check out these links http://dvdxcopy.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/127564

Here are my two secondaries:
I've never been sure what ide my dvd burner is on.
I lokked at my Nero logs and when I could bun a dvd in 13 min, my DMA was shown as ON, by the Nero disk tool and the nerp .txt log file. Now, it take me 22 min to burn the same dvd, and the Nero log shows the DMA off now, so this is what I'm trying to turn it back on.

Ok, well, I deleted both secondard IDE's, and now DMA is back ON. I ran the Nero disk tool and DMA is on for my BURNER and for my 2nd DVD ROM. I have two drives.
Question:
Before, DMA was off for both drives. I'm assuming DMA should always be on for every optical drive?
I made a test burn, it's it's FIXED! 14 min to burn a dvd.
Thanks.
