stunfan12, I have found it easy to just drag the other vob files out of the video ts folder and just onto the desktop. Leave everything else in the video ts folder. Play the Video TS folder using dvdplayer and just see when it ends.
If you want to put a larger dvd on two, you will have to use transcoder as mentioned, but I wouldn't recommend it because the picture quality is really not as good. I have used DVDBackup and deleted main vob files until it was under 4.3 gb (keeping all extras), then burned the rest of the movie using osex and sizzle with only the remaining chapters. This way you still get the menus and extra features to browse with the first dvd-r, and just finish the movie with the second.

You absolutely have to extract (RIP) the DVD VOB files using DVDExtractor (for OS 9) or OSex on (OS X). This is because the DVD must be decrypted. From that point, depending on whether the entire disk will fit in 4.3GB or less will determine whether you can just ISO the disk or not.
The second-best alternative is to select just the movie part of the DVD (usually every chapter on track 1) and then use a tool like Sizzle, Transcoder or DVD Studio Pro to build an ISO of that.
Long story short, unless you can do a 1:1 conversion of the original disk, you can't just copy files from the DVD because they are encrypted and you need .IFO files (and .BUPs should be there, too) as well as a specific folder layout (a VIDEO_TS folder) for everything to work correctly.
There are a couple of good tutorials for making 1:1 ISO copies, making movie-only copies and splitting 1 DVD into 2. These are posted in another message thread in this "Mac" Forum.

Ok I have to say that this has been a really good
thread for a beginner. But I have a problem now.
I ripped my dvd with QSEx and went through all the
fat trimming process and just ripped the english
version minus all the other crap. QSEx saved this
ripped file as a .VOB file on my hard disk, with the
knowledge I have from dvd ripping under pc platform
and what I have read in this thread this is correct.
I then take this .VOB file and since it is under 4.7 gig I
do not need to edit it further. So I use Toast Titanium
to burn. I went through the process step by step
according to the toast help file directions on burning
a disk.
I clicked the "other" option tab and held down the
mouse button and chose "DVD" from the menu. I then
chose "New DVD" and then I drug and dropped the
.VOB file that OSEx ripped for me and toast created a
file called "Untitle_Disk" because I chose the "New
Disk" option and then as a sub directory it has my
ripped dvd file.
I then completed the rest of the process by clicking on
"Burn" and the "Write Disk" or something like that.
It burned pretty fast (about 3 gig's in 8 minutes) and
when I went to view on my home DVD player I got
nothing. i then brought it back to my MAC and tried to
play it here and got nothing also. Even my MAC
doesn't recognize it!!!
Anyone know what I did wrong and can direct me? I
thought I had finally got the hang of it and of course I
was wrong or something. I just don't want to burn
through 10 DVD-R's before I get my first succcessfuly
backup. on acount of the price of these damn things!

EDITED:
Ok I looked a little further into the settings of OSEx.
AM I suppose to rip it as a DVD Image or a PS (Prog.
Stream)? The first time I explained above I did PS
and it saved as a .VON file like I said. So I tried to
open it again and try to rip it into a DVD image but it
then more than doubled in size to just over 7 gigs.
This of course is no good and will not work for me.
Is there a step I am missing where I have to turn the
VOB file ripped by OSEx under the PS option back
into a dvd compatible format? If so will all these
programs make the image over 7 gigs?
P.S.
I have no idea why it changed to this column format
after I edited this message the first time. The origional
message was the correct length. Oh well.

- Use elementary streams and title mode.
- Check options and make sure the key refresh rate is on title mode and not chapter mode (p1 i believe).
- Recombine the tracks using sizzle.
- Name a new DVD in toast exactly as the name that of the DVD as it appears on the desktop
- Drag and drop BOTH the video ts and audio ts folders in the new dvd from the disc image
- Burn

Yeah thanx for the input. I have got the whole process down now but now OSEx is corupting my m2v file and will not join the 2 into a disk image. I tried in sizzle also and when I go to choose the video input it lets me select it fine but when I try to select the audio it won't let me because the audio file is greyed out in the browse list.
I Then tried to just rip the movie in PS mode and not elements and got a combined video and audio .vob file. I then tried to load this into sizzle and got an incorrect format error saying something about "make sure all files are blah blah format". it appears that OSEx is killing the video file when I rip it. I have done some research and have found that this happens quiet often. To both the m2v file and the ac3 file.
Why is OSEx so highly recommended if it can't even rip a decent dvd?? Maybe it is just this disk I don't know. I am going to try a different one. The one I am having problems with is the movie called "I-Spy". If anyone knows why this is please explain. maybe it is my fault but I do not think so.

Sorry, I missed something...how do I get the m2v and ac3 from the vob? I have OSeX and the .vob I ripped with it, and sizzle... (aside from re-ripping as elem streams)
[EDIT] why wouldn't dvd image format in osex work and save all this trouble?

Hello folks, this is my first post, so be gentle ... but I actually read the rules, have been using other forums like this and have also been ripping DVDs for quite some time now ... so my questions should not be too silly.
I have been very successfull backing up DVDs using DVDextractor 0.9b and Toast under os9 ... somehow the image files created in 9 would not be recognized in my osx version of toast ... but anywhoo .
what I am really looking for is some online database that tells me if a DVD is dvd5 or dvd9 ... instead of putting DVDs into my mac and wait to quit DVDplayer and do apple-i
is there such a thing ? Thanks

For anybody who comments, "I though everything was supposed to be easy on Macs." Did it ever occur to you that copying DVDs is ILLEGAL and that the developers have done eveything they can to make the it as difficult as possible?? That is all.

transcoder and sizzle work so if you can afford to leave it overnight then it's safest. on mine i multitask both apps and the machines never crashed. thus if you're converting multiple DVD's it's quicker. My DP867 was working poth processors at 100% for about 3 hours.

oops ignore the above.
but on the illegal comment my g/f bought a cheap DVD player and most titles go light/dark and it's quite annoying. I've reburnt her DVD's and she can watch them without any hassle.
It's actually weird I suppose the decryper is crap.

I finally found a MacOSx native program that backs up a DVD and splits it automatically, similar to DVDxCopy. It is called DiscomVOBulatorPlus. Just go to www.macupdate.com and search for DiscomVOBulator. Before you can run it, you must also download a program called Forty-Two (literally) which can also be found at MacUpdate. You are also required to download a file. There is a link in the dmg. It is tricky at first to activate the program, but remember that when it tells you that activation was successfull, DO NOT press ok. Just switch windows and double-click the Disco'Plus icon. If there are any problems or you need more detailed instructions, email me at stunfan12@aol.com

Okay, To all the people that say they have done everything exactly as told. (DVDBackup--DVD2one--Toast-- Or something along those lines) Brought the VIDEO_TS file into toast, burned it, but when you try to play it, it doesn't work...
Heres the only thing that I can come up with. I successfully burned about 30 DVD-R's. All of the sudden, WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING DIFFERENT, the dvd's just stopped working. I've tried everything from trashing all programs used (3 times) and still nothing. There was only one thing I noticed that was different, when I press "record" in toast, the dialog box shows up that gives me the buffer underrun, simulation, write disk, etc.
Right when that dialog pops up (before you press write session), two files are added to the video_ts folder in the background. You may have to move the write session box to see them. These are the files I'm seeing:
Desktop DB and Desktop DF
I've researched and found that these two files are "invisible desktop files" that a mac uses to organize stuff.
THESE HAVE TO BE THE THINGS FU_CKING EVERYTHING UP
It's the only thing I've seen thats changed since burning successfull dvd's. I'ts been driving me mad the past few days trying to delete these files, but I can't. I have not found a solution yet, but I'm working on it.
ANYONE BURNING PLAYABLE DVD'S ON TOAST, PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THESE TWO FILES SHOW UP!!
They would be right above the vob, bup, files in the toast dvd box. they only apear WHILE BURNING. Any ideas, PLEASE post a reply!
