isn't the earth's gravity caused by its spinning? So if something were to happen to our sun wouldn't we keep on spinning and still have gravity, we'd just be floating out in space toward something unknown...

god deffinately does not exist. Because if he did how could he let such attrosities occur?
But life after death well, anybody's guess.
Although I can prove that I will exist forever.
And Here goes. Scientists agree that ALL matter is energy condensed, Yes. And they also agree that you cannot destroy energy, Only change it's form. Therefor, If you cannot destroy energy you cannot destroy matter and I, like everyone else ever to exist shall be here forever. Mwu ha ha ha........

the gravity is caused by the mass of the earth, the greater the mass the greater the gravitational pull is. if the sun was to suddenly stop shining, than put your head between your knees & kiss your butt goodbye because because everything on this world would freeze solid in a matter of days

Scientists also say you cannot create mass. But isn't that what happens when babies are born?
Check this out, I found it quite interesting:

Dunno about them sayin you can't create mass. Coz if that is true then how did the universe get created.

Hey all,
Well, I have to agree that this isn't really the type of thread that should be started because of the sensitive issue at hand.
So, with that said, here is my opinion:
I've been through hard times like those around in this thread and granted there are alot of times, when I just don't bother in believing if there is a God or not. But truth be told, in my opinion, I do believe that there is some spiritual being. I am not a bible thumper so I don't go around preaching. For me, it is just a sense of believing in what you want to believe in, nobody can change that. If that is what makes you a happy person, then that's good. I struggle at times to believe if HE actually exists or not. But you know, if he were true, He wouldn't want people to sit here and debate whether or not HE exists or not, but just want people to live there lives. Alot of people don't believe in God, hey that's cool. I don't neccessarily care one way or the other, just that you should live your life as you see fit. People are people in the general sense that they are going to do whatever makes them happy, and if you have strong beliefs; wether it be to believe or not, then that is cool and that is great, however you feel.
Everyone has their own beliefs, but it is not a wise thing to ask what they are in a thread, because it is just going to end up being a shouting match if the wrong people get in here.

Hmmm, a discussion on god that starts off with a post featuring an image of Optimus Prime... and yet not a single discussion of Primus or Unicron? LOL

If the sun disappeared, then 8 mins later the earth would effectively go in a straight line, & not have an orbit. Until it was affected by another large mass that had enough gravity to affect its' trajectory. We would freeze in not too short a time. the earths core would be the only source of heat. The deeper mines go, the warmer it gets. I'm not sure what would happen to our atmosphere. It would be one hell of a dark & cold winter!
The earths core is, of course, molten iron, (this also provides the earth with its protective shield through the generation of a magnetic field due to the motion of the core) from when the earth was created, a couple of years ago.
I can only assume that the moon would continue to orbit the earth if this were to happen. According to Newtonian physics, if the sun were to disappear, the earth would lose its' orbit immediately. This was contradicted by Einstein, who proved that nothing can go faster than the speed of light, even gravity! (Except for tachyon particles of course!).
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only converted.
Just don't get me started on the Theory of Relativity!

Energy = mass multiplied by c squared. (C= speed of light, 186,284 miles per second). The calculation used to work out the energy released by a nuclear explosion/reaction (Oppenheimer used this to great effect, just ask anyone in either Hiroshima or Nagasaki).
The Michelson-Morley experiment;
http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/physics/Michelson-MorleyExperiment.html
showed that the speed of light is constant. I.e. if a car travels at 70mph, does the speed of light increase by the aforementioned amount? No, it does not!
Now you've got me started!!

ddp, do you have a large wooden spoon per chance?
What is really frightening is that I do not have to look any of it up. It is all in my tiny, tiny mind!

Yep, when you sit and think about it, that is how you get such a large explosion from such a small amount of material. I find it simply staggering. If you could harness that energy, safely, they you would be on the way to be a rich man! I think that the bombs dropped on Japan had only a few pounds of Uranium or plutonium, I can't remember which.. The effects were, to say the least, devastating.

An innocent victim says it all, IMHO

I don't really wish to go into the politics, that is a road fraught with danger, but I am glad that these devices have not been used again. The history of man always shows that we find new & more terrible ways of killing each other. That picture, ignoring the words/propoganda around it, is the best reason NOT to EVER do it again.
It is ALWAYS the children who suffer the most.
That really does hurt & I am actually in tears as I am typing this out after seeing that picture.
If you're interested, the top link is quite informative. It goes onto more detail than I ever could. My understanding of it all is very limited!
