also have a look at alaskan malamutes, elkhounds, belgian sheepdogs, Setters (irish ones are beautiful dogs with loving temprament), retrivers, labrodors, Weimaraner (great family dog), collie (lassie), border collie (the dogs in babe), Saluki, Shiloh Shepherds (gorgeous http://www.shilohshepherds.org/), and Sheltie.

some of the above mentioned breeds are either hard to come by, expensive, or often named something else. your best bet is to take a look for some pics and when looking at dogs, compare details.

for a personal favorite, but not a spitz or really that big, i like staffordshire bullterriors, rhodesian ridgebacks, basenjis and pharoh hounds.

also, Doggy_Bot, dont judge a book by its cover. dobermanns, rotties, mastiffs, bulldogs, terriers...all these breeds have a TERRIBLE reputation. its because they are the breeds used in dog fights and they are the big scary dogs the the movies stereotype. i know lots of people who have owned all these breeds and have small children and have never ever had a problem. some, like mastiffs, just ADORE the attention kids give them. like any breed of dog, its how they are raised and treated that makes it dangerous. unless you've personally been in contact with one of these breeds and been bitten by more than the one dog you may have come across, please dont rule them out. having said that, i know some states in america ban certain above mentioned breeds, but that is more to the amount of dog fight rings rather than the amount of attacks on people.

Anyways. I would recomend a staffordshire bull terrier. They are well know to be one of the best family dogs around. Heres a pic of my staffy from a few years ago. Also, I had to post the above pic for Mrs Taz. Hehe

@darthnip

Don't know if you have made a decision yet, but I don't think you could go wrong at all with the Akita. Both of my sons have Akitas and they are great dogs -- very loyal to the owner and a good family pet. My older son's dog is Keanu (10 years old & 90 lbs) and he also has a Sherba Inu (sp?). This dog is from the Akita family and Shala looks like a 3/4 size Akita. My younger son's Akita is Kado and he is 4 years old and weighs about 110 pounds. One is an American breed and the other is Japanese breed -- can't rember which is which. I think the American breed is the smaller one. They are all great pets. The biggest downside to the Akita is they shed hair -- really bad twice a year when their coats change. Kado lived with me a couple of years before my son bought a house and we had to vacumn every 3-4 days. I would post a picture of Kado, but I can't figure out how to post it.

thanks to all for your input! I know for sure i want an Akita, the problem is just finding one. I dont like the idea of having a dog shipped on a plane, so i have to find a pup within driving distance. I'm prepared to go 400-500 miles if needed, but i just heard from a lady only 40 minutes from me that is planning a litter this summer so i'm excited about that, i'll be going to see the parent dogs soon. I'll be sure and bring this thread back to life with puppy pics after i get a pup. thanks again, and lets keep the "doggie" thread going!

I've got an Afghan and a Whippet -- I love dogs that control their own eating (==you simply keep food in the cup and leave it in the cup for 24/7, just fill when they're empty, no feeding times needed, as they'll never finish everything within 5mins after putting food in the cup). And ye, both are Fast =) But get Afghan only if you have way too much spare time to comb through the hair at least once a week (takes about 2-4 hours). I'd love to get a Saluki tho (looks exactly the same as Afghan and has pretty much the same "cat-like" attitude, where dog's only purpose in life is NOT to please his/her master, but to be more independent), but two is enough. And no, my dogs don't bark. Afghan, who is now 9 years old, has barked last time probably once in summer 2003 or so.. They just think its waste of energy :-)

Oh yes, Afghans and Salukis both reach easily 14-17 years of age, no inherited diseases (==not too common, breeding hasn't spoiled the breed yet).

Just my opinion, of course.

Well my dog is called Ziggy - she is now 14 and I got her when she was 7 months old from Battersea Dogs Home in London. She was abused by her previous owner, having no fur, wet herself when you went near her and was generally a mess.

My view about dogs is there are enough in the world and I try not to encourage anyone to breed more as that leads to unwanted pets. I know breaders are needed, but not puppy farms.

Ziggy is a Cross Doberman and Sharpei and what a wonderfully loyal caring dog. She has many of the attributes of a Labrador and goes to the pub with me every night. Licks everyone who will let her and looks for food and brings a little pleasure to people she meets.

Well there you go I have a soft heart.

Here is her picture.

The funny thing is about this story is I didn't want a dog, it was my girlfriend at the time, after much pestering I gave in and we got a dog. Though it was me that had to get up at 7 am to walk it in the mud and rain etc.

A year later she moved out and I said what about the dog? She said I can't take her you keep her! Well now she is my best mate.

thats one of the main reasons i want another dog. They dont care if you're broke, or if you had a bad day and are a bit crabby, a dog is your best friend no matter what. andi refuse to buy a dog from a pet store, or a backyard breeder, or some idiot that breeds their dogs to show the kids the "miracle of life". those are the types of things that leads to unwanted pets and strays. The only thing keeping me from adoptinig a dog from a rescue shelter is the fact that i want an Akita. No matter how cool the dog is, you never know how they will act around children, and since i have 4 kids i cant run the risk a giant akita hurting one of the kids. I'd just feel better with a puppy so i would know for sure how it was raised and know its habits right from the beginning. at least then if something bad does happen i can only blame myself for not being a proper dog owner. i just dont feel it's right ot blame a dog for showing their natural behaviour. It's a shame that the pit bull has a bad reputation, i've had 3 of them and they were the best dogs i ever owned besides my rottie. when my nephews and nieces were little they used to ride my pitt bulls, pull on the ears, steal the food bowls, etc, and the worst thing that ever happened was when one of the females got a little playful and barked 1 time at my nephew and it scared him so bad he pissed his pants! he was 3 at the time, but it sure was funny. when he started crying molly (the pitt) crouched down and crawled over too him wimpering like a baby saying she was sorry. saying all pitt bulls are bad is like saying all black people are thieves!! just a bunch of stereotypical bullshit in my opinion, a dog of any breed can be mean and aggressive if raised that way.

As I said, my dog was 7 months old when I got her. Have you search for a specialist Akita rescue centre - certainly with other breeds there are rescues of a certain type of dog. Although you say you don't want an adult dog, you can be pretty sure of their characters when they have grown up. Also people move and can't take their animal with them etc.

yeah i know there are good adult dogs, but i dont want to spend the whole time keeping a watchful eye on the dog because i didn't know it when it was a pup. I just cant bring myself to do it, as much as i would like to rescue an adult from a shelter. and yes there are Akita rescue centers in my area, and there was even a dog there that i considered adopting, but i just cant risk it, call me weird but i'd just feel better about getting a puppy. My wife and I have recently discussed buying 5-6 acres of land to build a house on and also build a large kennel and fenced off area to start a large breed rescue facility since it seems the larger breeds are the ones that get abandoned most often. But it will probably just end up on the ever growing list of things i would like to do. In a few years i'm going to end up with about 50 acres and 6-7 horses to deal with, i dont see where a few dogs added in would make that much difference. "Come on down to uncle Darth's animal farm!"
