The folder must be named exactly SWAPMAGIC and the elf file must be named exactly SWAPMAGIC.ELF
Keeping in mind that I have had times when even this seemed not to work...it was quite weird.
Anyways, I talked to a friend at work today, and he said that he managed to get his Ipod to work for his PSP, and he said that it shouldn't be any different than getting it to work for the PS2...What he had to do was get certain drivers, which I know nothing about.

As for your question, yes, you should be able to see the USB advance menu when you don't have any games; the list will just be empty. (I actually haven't been able to even get my PS2 hard drive to run games, but the menu does appear on it.

Ive done this but not with swapmagic. Just use AR max evo and goto the media player. then load usbextreme or advance off of a thumbdrive or your usb harddrive and then run the games. If you cant see the usb harddrive in AR or advance then its not formated correctly.

well... im happy to finally come to undesrtand how the process goes to run custom elf files on my ps2...
unfortunately, what i discovered is not so nice...
my ps2 DOESNT run them...
I used ARMAX to test USBADV.ELF and USBEXTREME.ELF and when i select to open them, it looks like if its gonna load the app but it doesnt...
(at least for those 2)
I've tested with 5 diff apps so far
USBADV.ELF - FAILED
USBEXTREME.ELF - FAILED
MCFORMAT.ELF - WORKED
HDLOADER.ELF - FAILED
PS2LINK.ELF - FAILED

im really bummed... well not bummed.. actually confused... cuz if it was that it couldnt play ANY elf file at least I would know where to look but this way i honestly dont know what happens..
anybody with a clue on whats wrong here???

You must have the slimline. It doesnt play alot of elf files because the routines in the slimline are different than those in the older fat versions. Did you use armax's program that formats a cd with the files on it cuz that actually makes alot of elfs less compatible. I put the elf files on the thumbdrive and I didnt have a problem with usbadv anyways. Ive ran TT superbikes and a couple more games off an iomega 60GB usb drive.

if you have the fat version then you should be able to do the memory card exploit and then run usbadvance although if you have the fat version its much faster if you install a normal ide harddrive and use hdloader or hdadvance.

i have a Slim one, 70001.
I tested the same cd on a friends fat ps2 and it works just fine...
Although there's sth i dont get... if my pirated USBEXTREME doenst work, that means that even if i buy the original one it wont work either right? i mean, the ELF is the same!

If you buy an original it should work because it is coded on a disc that the PS2 can read. I dont know why your having problems getting it to work with armax off of thumbdrive cuz it works no problem for me on my v12 which if i remember is the 70001. If i were you I would look for a different version of the usbadvance and try it cuz it may be a version compatibility issue.

thats my point.
its not a matter of the ps2 READING the cd, its the ELF file...
i've tried several ones and still no luck.
could u email me the elf file to ninioautista@yahoo.com.ar? i would apreciate that:d

Good Evening All,

Thought I would share my good luck story with you.

It all started last week.......

I purchased my 200GB 3.5" hard drive via ebay last week, including external case, power supply, hard drive, cable and software for the measly sum of $134.50.

I waited 3 days and whilst waiting I jumped onto this forum and gained all the necessary knowledge to download programs like USBADVANCE and ESB Extreme HD Dumping programs.

On wednesday this week I started dumping files onto the HDD and after dumping 55 Games (mostly CDR) I still have 155GB Left (I said it was a good news story)

Last night I played all but 10 games and got 2 that didnt work....

(This just keeps getting better doesn't it!!!)

The even better news is that I did it all with the help of you guys..

So I guess its not so much a good news story as much as a big 'THANKYOU'

Thanks for the content and thanks for the help and keep up the good work all of you!!!

IF the SWAPMAGIC keeps re-starting, you may want to read this.

I will also share my story. (a good one at the end)
I am writing based on my experience, if in your case was different (and better) please let me know

I am using SP2 version SCPH-70012 (slim) I bought one 2.5" ide drive and one 3.5" each one with its respective external case and I can play the games on both.

Here are some clarifications:

()OMG I did everything right and SwapMagic just keep rebooting.... what can I do?
These were MY symptoms:
-I started the PS2 and the SwapMagic screen appeared
-After a few seconds a second screen appeared with two options:
Load Program & Video Mode (If you see this, it is too late)
- I pressed (X) or square and it just reboots.
I found out that the PS2 was not recognizing the USB, but why? Because I had it connected and ON before I turned on the PS2.
How did I solved it? Every time I want to use the USB, I make sure that the PS2 and USB are OFF, I connect the USB HDD to the PS2 and I turn on the PS2 BEFORE the USB HDD. Simple, just press the PS2 power button and wait 2 seconds until the PlayStation logo appears, then you can turn on the USB.

() The FAT32 formatting. The PS2 recognizes the formatting, but why with the USBeXtreme tool? some ppl say because it allows you to have large FAT32 disk (well you can do it with any other tool that allows you that)

() Why the SWAPMAGIC folder and the renamed ELF file? well that is how SWAPMAGIC hard coded the boot section. For more info. See SWAPMAGIC manual http://www.console.com/_playstation_2/swapmagic/swapmagic36manual.pdf

() Do I have to use swapmagic version 3.6? Yes, because on this version was added the program loader from USB functionality. BUT if you already have another version of SwapMagic, you don't have to buy the latest 3.6, what you can do:
Download the ISO image of SwapMagic 3.6 and burn it.
Start your PS2 with your old version of SwapMagic
Swap the DVD with the just burned version of SwapMagic 3.6 and you are ready to go

() You don't need to have games on the hard drive to start USBAdvance and test if the USB Advance loads.

() Do I have to click (X) to load the program on SWAPMAGIC?
(IN MY CASE)No, If you have the screen with Load Program & Video Mode, there is something wrong. When everything is working, you just start up the PS2, the SWAPMAGIC screen appears and a few seconds later the USBAdvance screen appears (with out pressing anything)

()Is the USB faster than the DVD? NO, PS2 usb is version 1.1 and it is not faster (actually is slower) if you have a game with a lot of on video-stories, you may want to consider using the DVD, because replaying the videos from usb is really slow and they sound horrible.

()If your USB HDD requires extra power supply please provide it.

Thanks, and please with me your comments

Hi All,

Yet again some more good news and a handy tip!!

I have installed now 80+ games onto my harddrive and now only have 10 that dont work......It really is a great world we live in.

I was finding that trying to install certain games via the DVD drive on my PC was not working at all. The same error occured over and over "Invalid Device" or something similar. When I installed an old CD Game (<700mb) no worries, but the DVD games were presenting a real issue.

Then I discovered that if I load the ISO onto my Virtual Drive EVERYTHING WORKED, EVERYTIME!!!!!!!!

matwalker <---------- possibly the happiest dude in Australia.

Again guys thanks for all your work and keep it up!!

Wow, ever since I got my external USB hard drive, I'd had nothing but trouble with running games off them. I've just been burning them all to DVD ever since, which can get to be pretty costly, when occasionally you bork a DVD. Maybe I should get out my old external hard drive and giv'r another try!

i have the stuff, but they don´t work!
i have a brand new PS2 Slim (750004), i've a HDD 200 Gig, wich i formatted with either winiip and ul_format: neither one worked!
I tried with all of the disc and the disc partitioned: neither! i tried with a old V.9 PS2: no can do!
I'm trying to load from a non modded PS2, just with SM 3.6 + USB Advance! I did all the procedures described in one the forums!
Always hangs up in the Swap Magic 3.6 Menu (before the load program message).
Why Can´t i make the dam thing to work? Did someone manage to put a 750004 (witch i think is also called V.14, right?) to load from HDD with SM 3.6 + USBAdvance.

I don't know why people are having so many problems with this but I'm the one who posted the tutorial so here is a more thorough one:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. You need the following items:
(a). A PS2 (obvious)
(b). A USB hard drive or an IDE hard drive in a USB enclosure
(c). Swapmagic 3.6 (NO EXCEPTIONS, ACTUAL COPY!!!)
(d). USB Extreme Software
----> http://www.hdadvance.com/download/USBeXtreme.zip)
(e). USB Advance '.ELF' file
----> http://www.sksapps.com/hd/USBAdvance1.Cracked.rar
(1). When you extract this archive you will get a '.cue' and a
'.bin' file. Click on the '.cue' file and burn it with nero
(no need to change anything here, just burn it)
(2). When it's done search the cd and copy and paste the '.elf'
file to your desktop, this is all you need from the disk
(*). Both these programs are inside of an archive, if you do not have
"Winrar" installed on your system you will not be able to use
them, download it here:
----> http://www.rarlabs.com/rar/wrar351.exe

(Just install this program then right-click on the two above mentioned files and select 'extract here' these will produce the two files we need)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
2. (a). First, plug your USB drive (or USB enclosure) into one of your
computer's USB ports (preferabbly USB 2.0 but thats just for
speed) and wait for the drive to appear in 'My Computer'
(install any drivers if neccessary)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
3. (a). Open the 'My Computer' window if you have not already done so
(b). right-click on the USB Drive, scroll down and click on
the 'format' button
(c). Under the drop down box for 'File System' select 'NTFS' (if
you have an older version of windows this might not appear, in
this case select 'FAT32'
(d). Make sure that neither of the boxes are checked (unless you're
positive your hard drive is in primo-condition in which case
check the 'quick format box')
(e). Hit 'Start'. when its done hit ok and close the format program
---------------------------------------------------------------------
4. (a). Start up the USB Extreme software (this should be called
"USBExtreme.exe")
(b). go to the 'disk format' tab, select format, and then click the
USB hard drive that you hooked up earlier and hit 'ok'
---------------------------------------------------------------------
5. (a). Go back to the 'My Computer' screen and open up the USB hard
drive
(b). right-click inside of the (most likely) blank window,
scroll down to 'new', and select 'folder'
(c). Rename the folder to "SWAPMAGIC" (Exactly what is written
inside the quotes NOT counting the quotes, but everything
else, capitals and all)
(d). Go inside your newly created folder
(e). Leaving this folder open go to where you downloaded and
extracted the '.ELF' file, right-click on this (and
only on this) file and hit 'copy'
(f). Go back to the "SWAPMAGIC" folder you created
right-click inside of it and hit 'paste'
(g). Now rename this '.ELF' file that is now contained inside of
the "SWAPMAGIC" folder to: "SWAPMAGIC.ELF" (Again exactly how
it is printed)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
6. (a). Go back to the USBExtreme.exe program
(b). Click on the "Games Installer" tab
(c). Under the 'CD/DVD ROM Drive' drop-down box select which drive
you inserted the PS2 game (and only a PS2 game) into(which you
will now put in to your computer at this point)
(d). Under the 'media type' drop-down box select whether the game
is a dvd or cd (which can be determined by looking at the disk
itself)
(e). Under the 'Hard Drive' drop-down box select the drive letter
that corresponds to the USB hard drive (Should be the same
letter as when we formatted it above)
(f). Inside the 'Game Name' text area type in the name of the game
and finally, hit start
(g). The game installation could take awhile depending on the game
but once it is done eject the USB drive from your computer by
clicking on the 'safely remove hardware' icon usually located
in the lower right hand corner of the screen in your icon tray
(Looks like a green arrow pointing left and a rectanglular
object under it)and selecting the drive (this is very
important because if you have write caching enabled on the
drive and you don't eject it this way you're entire game(s)
will be erased from it)
(*). If it says "Can't be removed because it is busy" or something
similar to that give it a second or two and try again until it
says "You are now safe to remove the device"
---------------------------------------------------------------------
7. (a). Disconnect the drive from your computer and hook it up to your
PS2's USB ports on the front (Doesn't matter which slot)
(b). Make sure you turn on the USB Drive before your PS2, insert
the Swap Magic Disk (DVD or CD version, I don't believe it
matters *DVD if you must be told an option*) into the PS2 and
wait for it to load up
(c). If it works then it should show the SwapMagic screen for about
2 or 3 seconds and then should automatically load to the USB
Advance screen where it should read the name of the game(s)
you put on the drive
(d). Highlight the game you wish to play and hit 'X' on your
controller
(e). the screen should go black and after a bit it should start
(give it time it takes a bit longer to load than from the CD
itself)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
8. (a). If the game is compatible (Be aware that a lot of games do
not work or at least do not work well) enjoy!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------

I organized it by numbers and letters so if someone is having problems with a specific part of this procedure then they can reference it exactly and help things run smoother.
When you post a problem be sure to tell:
-The version of PS2 you have
-What game you're trying to load
-Wether you have a USB Drive or an IDE inside of an enclosure
-The type of IDE drive (if applicable)
-Anything else you deem relevant to the situation

Hopefully this will help all you struggling folks!

so, everyone has to boot the ps2 with swapmagic 3.6? no matter what other program he will use later? right?

so usbadvance is just a exe program AFTER ps2 booted by SM 3.6?

does it mean, everyone who is modding ps2 will have a SM disk?

can swap magic disks be backup after I purchasing it in case of it got damaged?

gpsfan, in answer to your questions:
1) yes & no. Many ppl have a modchip ONLY, and they play games. Others (like me) have Swapmagic v3.6 and nothing else. The PS1 games are played with BreakerPro.
2) Yes, USB Advance is an .ELF (Sony's way of namimg .exe files).
3) No, see answer 1 above.
4) No, SM discs cannot be burned. They are 'pressed' at a factory, and have special arrangement that does not allow direct copying. If you cannot read the DVD's boot sector information (just like w/PS2 games), and you can't write it....you can't burn it.
