really thanks for your replying !
I tried to search info about modchip, and did get some for v12,but they just state FOR V12, nothing else, like here: http://www.covetime.com/modshop/product_info.php?cPath=11&product... I'm not familiar with soldering, dont know how to do with that PCB pic.
so I am buying this:
http://revolution-sales.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=81&pro... though some sites say ,only 2 parts needed for v12(conflict with each other) , like this site: http://www.ps2fliptop.net/buy_magic_switch.htm
I dont dare to buy this though it looks nicer than magic switch pro,:
http://www.thegiantstore.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID...
but to V12, maybe have to cover another senser on the inside bottom.
puuuhhhh,so much info, that is why I wanna take the clearist and easiest way :sm3.6+magic switch pro v2,though I am still worrying about the SM disk damage.
if anyone think the modchip is the best way and easist way to use burnt DVD game and USB HDD game, I will study more on soldering and pcb. anyone successed on 70012 version?
xhardc0re, Merry Xmas !

Is your HDD compatible with the PS2? Check this out!
http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/?p=list
How do you find your hard drive?
-Go into your control panel
-Go into System
-Click on the Hardware tab
-Click the Device Manager button
-See where it says Disk Drives, drop down the list
-Look at the naming of the drive, right click Properties for more information
============
@gpsfan, buy a DSM4 Pro or Matrix Infinity. Or a SMv3.6 DVD & CD, along with either: a flipcover OR these: http://www.console.com/product_ps2_pstwofix.php
That's it! You'll be able to boot 95% of all PS2 games w/out any hassle. The other 5% will require rebuilding or will not boot at all. Read this thread & "school" yourself: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/252193

I don't know why people are having so many problems with this but I'm the one who posted the tutorial so here is a more thorough one:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. You need the following items:
(a). A PS2 (obvious)
(b). A USB hard drive or an IDE hard drive in a USB enclosure
(c). Swapmagic 3.6 (NO EXCEPTIONS, ACTUAL COPY!!!)
(d). USB Extreme Software
----> http://www.hdadvance.com/download/USBeXtreme.zip)
(e). USB Advance '.ELF' file
----> http://www.sksapps.com/hd/USBAdvance1.Cracked.rar (1). When you extract this archive you will get a '.cue' and a
'.bin' file. Click on the '.cue' file and burn it with nero
(no need to change anything here, just burn it)
(2). When it's done search the cd and copy and paste the '.elf'
file to your desktop, this is all you need from the disk
(*). Both these programs are inside of an archive, if you do not have
"Winrar" installed on your system you will not be able to use
them, download it here:
----> http://www.rarlabs.com/rar/wrar351.exe
(Just install this program then right-click on the two above mentioned files and select 'extract here' these will produce the two files we need)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
2. (a). First, plug your USB drive (or USB enclosure) into one of your
computer's USB ports (preferabbly USB 2.0 but thats just for
speed) and wait for the drive to appear in 'My Computer'
(install any drivers if neccessary)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
3. (a). Open the 'My Computer' window if you have not already done so
(b). right-click on the USB Drive, scroll down and click on
the 'format' button
(c). Under the drop down box for 'File System' select 'NTFS' (if
you have an older version of windows this might not appear, in
this case select 'FAT32'
(d). Make sure that neither of the boxes are checked (unless you're
positive your hard drive is in primo-condition in which case
check the 'quick format box')
(e). Hit 'Start'. when its done hit ok and close the format program
---------------------------------------------------------------------
4. (a). Start up the USB Extreme software (this should be called
"USBExtreme.exe")
(b). go to the 'disk format' tab, select format, and then click the
USB hard drive that you hooked up earlier and hit 'ok'
---------------------------------------------------------------------
5. (a). Go back to the 'My Computer' screen and open up the USB hard
drive
(b). right-click inside of the (most likely) blank window,
scroll down to 'new', and select 'folder'
(c). Rename the folder to "SWAPMAGIC" (Exactly what is written
inside the quotes NOT counting the quotes, but everything
else, capitals and all)
(d). Go inside your newly created folder
(e). Leaving this folder open go to where you downloaded and
extracted the '.ELF' file, right-click on this (and
only on this) file and hit 'copy'
(f). Go back to the "SWAPMAGIC" folder you created
right-click inside of it and hit 'paste'
(g). Now rename this '.ELF' file that is now contained inside of
the "SWAPMAGIC" folder to: "SWAPMAGIC.ELF" (Again exactly how
it is printed)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
6. (a). Go back to the USBExtreme.exe program
(b). Click on the "Games Installer" tab
(c). Under the 'CD/DVD ROM Drive' drop-down box select which drive
you inserted the PS2 game (and only a PS2 game) into(which you
will now put in to your computer at this point)
(d). Under the 'media type' drop-down box select whether the game
is a dvd or cd (which can be determined by looking at the disk
itself)
(e). Under the 'Hard Drive' drop-down box select the drive letter
that corresponds to the USB hard drive (Should be the same
letter as when we formatted it above)
(f). Inside the 'Game Name' text area type in the name of the game
and finally, hit start
(g). The game installation could take awhile depending on the game
but once it is done eject the USB drive from your computer by
clicking on the 'safely remove hardware' icon usually located
in the lower right hand corner of the screen in your icon tray
(Looks like a green arrow pointing left and a rectanglular
object under it)and selecting the drive (this is very
important because if you have write caching enabled on the
drive and you don't eject it this way you're entire game(s)
will be erased from it)
(*). If it says "Can't be removed because it is busy" or something
similar to that give it a second or two and try again until it
says "You are now safe to remove the device"
---------------------------------------------------------------------
7. (a). Disconnect the drive from your computer and hook it up to your
PS2's USB ports on the front (Doesn't matter which slot)
(b). Make sure you turn on the USB Drive before your PS2, insert
the Swap Magic Disk (DVD or CD version, I don't believe it
matters *DVD if you must be told an option*) into the PS2 and
wait for it to load up
(c). If it works then it should show the SwapMagic screen for about
2 or 3 seconds and then should automatically load to the USB
Advance screen where it should read the name of the game(s)
you put on the drive
(d). Highlight the game you wish to play and hit 'X' on your
controller
(e). the screen should go black and after a bit it should start
(give it time it takes a bit longer to load than from the CD
itself)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
8. (a). If the game is compatible (Be aware that a lot of games do
not work or at least do not work well) enjoy!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I organized it by numbers and letters so if someone is having problems with a specific part of this procedure then they can reference it exactly and help things run smoother.
When you post a problem be sure to tell:
-The version of PS2 you have
-What game you're trying to load
-Wether you have a USB Drive or an IDE inside of an enclosure
-The type of IDE drive (if applicable)
-Anything else you deem relevant to the situation
Hopefully this will help all you struggling folks!

Let me start off by saying that this is my first post ever, so please excuse me for any mistakes or ignorance.
Here's my situation =>
I've got Swap Magic v3.6 and USB Advance working on my v12 PSTwo slim. I've got around 10 PS2 games working, but I'm really having trouble getting MVP Baseball 2005 working. It installs OK using either the DOS or Windows USBExtreme clients. I can see it on the USB Advance screen, but after selecting it to play, the screen goes black and I see the hard drive light flicker for a while and then it stops and nothing happens. Could this have something to do with the game being an online type game or DNAS? Also being as how there appears to be many compatibility issues with the external USB hard drive route and lack of USB Advance/Extreme updates to address these incompatabilities, should I look into purchasing an older PS2 that can accept the Network card with the IDE drive plugged directly into it, or should I look into a mod to the PSTwo slim such as the HD Connect? I'm fairly confident with my soldering skill. Any suggestions you could give would be greatly appreciated.

kchase56, I have the exact same setup as you do. Not the same game... DNAS would not effect the offline game *at all*. It only has to do w/online play. I'll look into it & see if there's incompatibility. Second, yeah the USB 1.1 route will always be much slower than native HDD. Since slimline has same HDD compatibility as the FAT PS2, I'd try XCM HD Connect or the HDcombo. Since the combo is newer, might want to see what others are saying. If you -can- find an older version, and buy a laser fix/power supply fix at the same time, that's a good choice. Reason I say this, older versions have probs. As does the v12 slimline w/the weak laser. Already running into probs with mine. Native HDD support will always be the best choice. And you'll want to get yourself a m0dchip vs. swap magic if you go the XCM HD Connect route.

i don't see how people get USB Advanced to work with the slims, i have a v13 slim and it doesn't recongize my external for edited by ddp, i'm afraid if i get ;usb extreme it still wouldn't work, most of what people say on here just tell you that it works and doesn't give you any way of showing you that usb advanced actually works, we'll if it works why isn't it working with mine i did everything possible to make my external work with my ps2 v13 slim but it just says insert a usb device which i did and it still doesn't work.

2cold, so at what screen are you getting that msg "insert USB device"? Did you full format it in Windoze? Burn the USB Advance .elf file & add that to a SWAPMAGIC directory on your HDD?? Copy the files over from your games using the USB Advance software???
Here's another reference, give this a try: http://usbfaq.ps2nfo.com This works OK on my v12. Not fast, but just OK. Next game I will try is Xen0saga II; if that works (with all the movies) that's good.

"Ok This Is Exactly What I Did" - wen't into computer managment and did a full format in NTFS, then wen't into dos and did the ul_format, after the format was finished i install a game using the ul_install in dos, then after the game was finished uploading i wen't into my computer wen't into the ps2 drive and made a new folder and called it SWAPMAGIC, then, i put the USB Advanced CD in the disc drive and copied the .ELF file into the SWAPMAGIC folder as you stated, next i removed the external from windows using the safe removel, plugged the usb connector into the ps2 slim into the slot one of the 2 usb ports, next i put the swap magic 3.6 cdrom disc into the ps slim, and waited till it got to the please insert disc screen, then i put the USB Advanced disc into the ps2 slim, even tried both the normal boot and the special boot, we'll it booted up great but when it gets to the screen where it has the menu and stuff like that like fomat and start, then on the left it has a list we'll none of the game/games are showing up on that list, it just keeps telling me "insert a usb device"??

Ok, so u have a MAD DOG multimedia 3.5" Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure, which has plug-play - supports USB 2.0 & Firewire 1394. The the "model number" is: MD-EN350COM, the brand of hard drive that's in the enclosure is a Western Digital 40.0 GB, "Model Number" : WD400EB - 75CPF0. So this is on the hardware compatibility list?
