Not really. Pre-amps are fine, and do sound great, but they arent really required. Id just get a main receiver with enough output to power 7 speakers.

Thats all you need mate. I know a lot of audiophiles will say that you should get a receiver, and then get the correct amount of pre-amps to power your speakers. That only really applies to set-ups like the Lexicon RV8 and other such set-ups. When you are in the lower price brackets like myself, you have really have to be taken a receiver/amp in one unit. Denon, NAD, Marantz, Pioneer, Sony and loads of others make very good ones. My favourite are the Marantz setups, but the Pioneer ones are excellent too.

Im using my Marantz SR7500 with Monitor Audio speakers and it sounds awesome mate.
