Ok Guys, Went on vacation and while I was gone SONY sent me a NEW Burner and the results were the same....Illegal disk error. I also backed up the file with DVD decryptor and received a similar error stating that there was an incompatable format. Since I'm having a similar problem with Nero and DVD Decryptor, and have a new burner, could that mean that the problem is outside of the burner? When I use DVD+R Disc, I have no problem. I'm confused and an exhausted....please help........

@DKDeluxe,

Just out of curiosity, what dvd movie you're backing up and having trouble with? Apparently, the main issue is not your burner [your new SONY dvd burner]. You stated that you received a new burner, yet the problem still exist? Perhaps, you should copy and paste the "current error log" and post it in here, so other members can help to resolve better. Not much help but I'm as clueless as you are as well.

OK, I'll post the log this afternoon but what I don't understand is why I'm having a problem ONLY with DVD-R/W disc? All the movies burn without a problem using the DVD+R disc. And 've been using SONY disc. Could it be my USB wire or something? I am totally baffled...............

OK Guys, This is getting frustrating now. I un-installed Nero and DVD Decrypter, Ran the Nero Clean Sweep, re-installed them both and got the same illegal disc(Nero), Incompatability format (Decryptor) error when I use DVD-R Media (SONY). Tried it with DVD+R (SONY) Media and it burned fine.

I have made about 15 coasters, this is getting out of hand.

Could there be a problem with my ASPI Driver? Could it be the Book Type Setting?

Pleaseeee Helpppppppp...........

@DKDeluxe - you really have a strange situation there. Short of suggesting either sticking to +R discs or trying a different brand of -R ie Verbatim datalifeplus -R, dunno what else to say. You've had burner swapped out so it can't really be that. It is worth trying another type of -R media as that's cheaper than getting new drive..

ps Booktyping is just for +R discs and your ASPI layer is up to date..

Am starting to look into this driver mentioned at end of your logfile

to see if there's anything worth looking at there. Just doing some google searches, here's one (probably not much help but am grasping for other ideas at this point) -

Thanks Creaky, I'll get some verbatim media today. But what I can't understand is how the SONY DVD-R disc worked flawlessly for weeks (Even the cheap Hyundai DVD-R)and now it won't burn anything. I just purchased a Home Theatre System that will ONLY play DVD-R Media. That's why this is a major problem.

I read a link referring to a EEPROM Utility thread. Have you heard of that?

I'll post a new log later. Maybe there's something else..... Thanks a lot..

i agree with you, this is an odd one.

as to the eeprom thing, yup i've read one or two of those by Mort81, i'll have another look to remind myself...

yup - found one, but i don't know enough about the eeprom thing (i know what one is, i just don't know what rewriting it would do, i guess you'd put firmware back on it, but that's just a guess) - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/208554 and there are loads more threads with the word 'eeprom' in them. I can't go thru 'em as i'm at work and we have a petty monitoring system in place for the Net. Maybe send a PM to 'Mort81' saying i asked if he'd join the thread or explain exactly what the eeprom thing does/whether he thinks it would help....

@DKDeluxe,

The DRU720A latest firmware is JYC4. I have no more idea and as of now, am clueless to give any suggestions. However, it won't hurt to update/upgrade your dvd's firmware. Even if you just received it from Sony a couple of days ago, still the burner is not to date on the firmware.

If you want to know what firmware version is your burner, just open up Nero, go to ToolKit, InfoTool, it should retrieve all the drivers that was installed onto your computer, click on DRIVER, this should show you what firmware or version is your Sony burner. Only if you haven't done so, here is what I found at the rpc firmware forum, it won't hurt to take a look at it: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2028 - hope things will work out for you in due time.

i hate firmware, so few manufacturer's tell you what's in the damn files. Grrr!

@creaky,

My bad... I was in a bit hurry that's why. Yeah, you're right, it's for the VRD-VC20, I'm not quite sure what's that either. I'm lost now and can't think of any other solution to add on to his issue, so I hope you'll come up/see something down the line.

Have a great day buddy.

Creaky,

I also have Record Now and My DVD installed on my PC. Could these be causing a compatabilty issue? The SONY site said they are not compatable with the DRX-720UL.

in which case, uninstall both those. i'm confused now, you just said DRX-720UL which is an external drive, but all the logfiles say 720A ? - which drive have you definitely got ?

i'm still googling, but i think they're different enough drives to warrant different firmware..

Please let me know if I've done something wrong.

Creaky and Alkohol,

I deleted Record Now and My DVD, but that didn't help, so I decided to use the i-link instead of the USB. And the -R Media worked. I switched back to USB and ...you guessed it...Illegal disc error. I tried 3 different USB cables and plugged them into the front and back and they all made coasters.

I don't think the media that I'm using is the problem becasue they burned with the i-link. Any suggestions? This I-link fix may stop working also.

SAO = session at once. I'm only familiar with DAO (Disc at once) and TAO (Track at once). Found a couple real old links about SAO -
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=44178 - 3yr old link
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=52614 - ditto

however i'm more interested in the i-link (firewire) and USB info you gave. Had a quick look, and found one similar link, one of the replies os actually from the author of Decrypter, Lightning UK -
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=88372
and another - http://club.cdfreaks.com/printthread.php?t=102725 - USB problem but worked internally ie like normal drive

But why does it reads like this: 23:42:30 Destination Device: [0:0:0] SONY DVD RW DRU-720A JY03 (F:) (1394)? For some reason, I thought that was an Internal drive.

Yeah, it's definitely the media to me by looking at the log because I use DVD Decrypter a lot and all my successful burns never had mentioned something like that before. It is something with the format, and here it is, again: W 23:46:26 Failed to Write Sectors 7808 - 7839 - Cannot Write Medium - Incompatible Format

Creaky, I see the media is a "DVD-RW RitekW04". Is that any good? I have never use Ritek before, so I can't really comment on this.

original poster verified the drive is a 720UL even though it says it's a 720A - it's the exact same drive as far as i know. as to the media, this particular one is a rewritable so i'm ignoring that for now (i don't worry too much about results from rewritables myself); he's had the drive swapped out before, so he should try Verbatim datalifeplus -R discs, but to do simulation burns so as not to waste any discs, or rely on rewritables..

Creaky, I wonder if DKDeluxe burned/backed up using "on the fly"?

So, yeah... DKDeluxe, I would not recommend you do that. Can your burner at least "decrypt" or "rip" the original movie into your HD first? Is this issue in the process of ripping or burning? Again, what movie are you backing up?
