I think we need to talk the highpowers of AD into putting up a big arse banner on the very first page you come to, saying, MEMOREX SUCKS, DON'T BUY ANY, in big, giant letters.
Instead of having the ad post in every thread like we have now, maybe put the above banner there also. Word needs to get out about how sorry and lameass Memorex media actually is.
I wonder sometimes how many of us bought Memorex media the very first time we decided to backup something or whatever? I know I did. Ended up throwing all 50 in the trash.

Oh, and Clark, don't fret, my Toshiba wouldn't burn them either. Of course I now have an NEC also and it won't burn them either. Go figure. :)

Unfortunately the only immunization for memorex is trial and error and in most cases ERROR unless you are fortunate enough to ask here first. Memorex's are everywhere and apealing because of their magnetic tape rep. I never even liked their tapes that much. It was always maxell for me.

i liked maxell stuff, even in the past, but it was a bit pricier if i remember correctly like 10 years ago~ :) regardless, i still have maxell cassettes that play pretty well, they are older than my car...:)
as much as we all agree memosux sucks, i bet there is some VP @ Memorex just laughing his azz off since they STILL getting sales and more sales..and more $$ from the unknowing~ :) knowledge is power, too bad our marketing isn't as good as memorexs's :)

as long as we educate people here on what works & what doesn't, we have made a small dent on profits, up for works & down for doesn't!!

You know, at one time Memorex discs were pretty good (back in the 'early' days of recordable DVDs) I guess that somewhere along the line, an executive decision was made determining that profit margin was more important than reputation ... Some a-hole is probably laughing all the way to the bank ...

Pass the buck!
From what I've read about how those cheapo media manufacturers put pioneer out of business because nobody knew about dvd media quality back then.All those people wanted the cheaper prices,and now they are paying for it with lost data.

Odd...I have Toshiba SD-R5272 dvd writer and the Maxell DVD-R 8X isn't even reqognized by the burner. Verbatim DVD+R 8X never failed once in making DVDs, music disks, or data.. The store that I usually shop at doesn't carry Toshiba DVD+R 8X anymore, so I have to check out new brands for compatability. Any one have any experience with this burner and disks...??

@dufas,
Have you updated your firmware? I believe the most recent is 1031. Give that a try. Good luck!

Yes, it has the 1031 firmware upgrade, I even tried the Samsung SH-W08A [same interals as the Toshiba 5272] upgrade with the same results. The firmware is back to 1031 now...
Had the same problem with Verbatim's 2X to 16X DVD+R disks. Supposedly these disks would work on any burner from 2 to 16 speed according to Verbatim.
Verbatim later told me that these disks have a different dye than their other disks and that I should purchace a burner that supports their dye. Sort of like buying a new car just to use new tires...

After all the rude attacks on Memorex, it appears that it does come down to firmware. Toshiba is poor on firmware support, and their drives generally do not support CMC or even Ritek coded discs (that also means HP, Philips, Memorex, Imation, TDK, Maxell, and other lesser known brands.) In the case of the original thread regarding the Toshiba drive, the cause is lack of firmware support. Nothing else.
