and i know 'bout that. i'm a high school student, and after school i work at a college for six dollars an hour--only because i can't get a damn thing better. i'm more qualified for some of the jobs in this area than the holders of bachelors' degrees currently filling them, but circumstance comes around to bite me again. that's life. i'll complain about it and keep working to improve the situation.

and gas is over $3 a gallon here now. arg. my wallet is getting smaller!

Riding a bike isn't an option for most people. Even if they live close enough, weather conditions might not permit it to be your only means of transportation. Where I live there is no public transport either, something that is sorely lacking in many US locations compared to the places I have lived overseas. In places that I have been such as China where bicycles are the primary means of transportation, poeple tend to live much closer to their work as well. Where I live in the US a 10-20 mile commute is the norm for most of my coworkers, as the downtown area close to work isn't a very desirable location to live and raise a family.

Rising gas prices will affect us all in other ways as well. Foods and essential supplies that have to be transported will cost the grocer more, who will in turn pass the cost on to the consumer. Paying more for gas affects me bottom line. I am a salaried employee, I get paid the same if I work 40 hours or 80 hours, so the doubling of gas prices in the past year means less money for me to spend on non-essential things. If enough people are in the same boat then the economy starts taking a hit. Our economy is fueled by spending, and if poeple stop spending it goes into a nosedive.

The part that upsets me the most is looking at the oil companies bottom line. Last quarter saw record breaking prices, but also showed record breaking profits for the oil companies. They are clearly profiting from the additional burden on the common person.

Xian,

I live in NY and i knew someone who used to drive from the poconos in pennsylvania (sp?) to New york city every morning to work 2 jobs so he could raise 3 kids. Therfore I found you biking comment completely accurate, if he didnt have a car, his kids would not have food on the table, especially, because on a bike his ride would have taken over 9 hours to get to work.

As for the oil companies making huge profits, look at the Saudi prince who is worth 30 BILLION dollars soley off of oil profit. As i posted before, blame the Saudis, i do.

most people in the oil business except gas stations are making lots of money, the governments are making money because of the taxes but the average joe is losing money at the pumps & will loose more in heating his home if using oil.

There are a lot of things one can do to change their energy use but whining isn't one of them.

i drive as little as possible, i turn out lights when i leave rooms, i don't leave water running.i never do anything but large loads in the dish/clothes washers. i conserve energy and resources whenever i can, and that's about all i can do without launching a surely-futile career in politics.

i just posted this in a similar thread -

i'm in ripoff UK, and have to do a measly 50 miles a day, but diesel (for some time now) has been edging up to £1 a litre, which for me translates to £100 a month now (some months ago it was £80 a month).

i live on a narrowboat and luckily the (main) heating/hot water runs off 'red diesel' which is around 30pence-ish a litre, so that costs something daft like £120 a year. though next year i believe that the uk's 'derogration' on red diesel might end in which case the cost would be the same as streets prices for diesel. if that happens would have to revert to the wood/coal burner for all heating i think.

there's no way i could earn the same money in this little town (to cover my financial obligations), so i have to drive a fair distance to get to/from work. hey ho, hopefully fuel prices will drop again eventually.

George Bush sucks ass!!!!!! He's a freaking idiot! It's his falt gas prices have gone up! If the stupid B*$ch hadn't spent so much money on Iraq and sent all our troops there then we could've used those resources to help out in New Orleans!

Oh, and it's true... George Bush doesn't care about Black people! Bush is a disease to this country!

Here's what Bush really thinks of the American people...

What a fearless leader...
